Hardware :: Harddisk Is Not Detected During Installation?
May 7, 2010
I want to install Fedora Core-3 on Dell Optiplex 755 machine but when I am trying to install it, it is not detecting the hard-drive and unable to install it. When I tried to install Windows Xp, no problem for it and installed successfully.
My harddisk is WDC WD800JD-75MSA3 (80 GB).

how can I clone my installed ubuntu to a new harddisk? with 32bit ubuntu I have used:tar cvpzf -> create a tar file on my external nas system. after that I have done a restore tar xvpfz - worked with 32 bit.
Alternative I have mounted both disks and via another linux partition I have used:
cp -rvbdR /source/* /target
both methodes worked with ubuntu 32 bit. With 64 bit ubuntu I can NOT get it to work. error message after booting the clone: /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthoriy ..
I can see that /source/var/lib/gdm has different rights as /target - will be part of the problem.
This did not happen with the 32 bit ubuntu - but why ?

But i can see the disk in console while typing:
Code:
# sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
and I can also make changes in disk such as deleting all partions etc.

I'm going to replace the primary hdd of my box with another one of a different manufacturer, but of the same size (long story, never mind)
My current plan so I won't have to reinstall my system is booting from a Ubuntu CD (or USB stick, whatever) and doing
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
(If sdb happens to be a few megabytes smaller it doesn't matter, the last partition is not important)
Now my questions:
1. Is this going to work? Is it a bad idea?
2. Should I use any parameters for dd, for performance? Like setting bs (or something) to a bit smaller than the both HDD's (equal) cache size?
If that matters, the hdd contains both NTFS, ext3/4 and reiserfs partitions. I use grub to boot Ubuntu, WinXP and Win7.

I have a single SATA hard drive, not raided, with an XP partition on it. /dev/sda. I've already created an 18GB ext4 partition for Ubuntu and 2gb swap partition as well. For some ridiculous reason the Ubuntu 9.10 isn't even showing /dev/sda as an option to install to!
fdisk -l clearly shows /dev/sda there, and i gparted /dev/sda works like a charm. So why is the installer being so silly and not even allowing me to select it? And I can't go back and choose manual mode or anything, the installer jumps right from Timezone Settins into this partitioner screen. Here is a screenshot of fdisk -l clearly seeing the drive fine, yet the installer not showing it at all. This is one of the things that drives people away from Linux.. It never TELLS you what the problem is

I have an acer aspire L-5100 with Vista and fedora dual boot configuration. Fedora 11 worked fine. After upgrading with preupgrade The system shows a strange behaviour. The startup screen ( with no the little f in the first ) is first blue with the white place in the middle , the filling with the fedora f very slow ( 5 minutes ) and then nothing. No harddisk or network activity no booting. <ctrl><alt><delete> works for rebooting. <altfx> for console not. Hacking <alt f2><esc> very often and fast leads sometimes to a console where then the boot process starts running and the system comes up with gnome.

I just install a new 640GB harddisk and when i check its properties it shows 30GB in used, 556.8GB free, and total capacity of 586.8GB. The filesystem is ext3/ext4. So much amount of space is gone for no reason.

Now I want to backup some documents in ubuntu, but the harddisk is not visible, I can't see it, ok I think the term in Linux is that it is not mounted. Is there something else one should do ?

I have a Dell Vostro with sda and sdb (the latter was installed by myself). I installed FC14 x86 64 onto sdb with /boot being on /dev/sdb8
I did not want to install grub onto /dev/sda as this is a shared machine. I thought that I would be able to use the BIOS's 'select boot device' to select the sdb disk and boot off that and get into FC that way.
fdisk verifies that /dev/sdb8 is marked as bootable and grub (via find /grub/stage1) confirms that it is installed on hd1,7 (ie /dev/sdb8)
However, no matter which hd is choosen as the boot device, Windows is always booted - I change the boot order to use: DVD, sdb, sda but it still boots Windows. It seems like the BIOS only wants to boot sda no matter what.

I installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?
If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?

After lot's of research i still can't find any solution to my problem, that's why i'm posting a message here. So, it's been few days now that i'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10, with the live CD, but each time when i must choose where to install it or how to make partition, it just tell me there is no hard drive..(i have two 1 TB sata hard drive )So i tried many things, GParted doesn't find my hard drive either, they appear in the bios (i can run windows), try to uninstall a raid program that might hide the hard drive, but it didn't work either.
So i came to see that i had Marvell 9123 which seems to be a SATA controller, and few people seems to have some similar issue with that Marvell stuff..I'm quite desperate now.. i tried to install ubuntu on a USB drive but my computer just doesn't boot on it (i tried this method for the sb drive URL...

I am just getting started with Ubuntu and love it so far. It has breathed new life into an old Compaq Presario V2000 and once I get up to speed on it I hope to start running it on all the rest of our machines.
The only major problem I am having is that none of the USB devices I have plugged in are being detected. From what I have seen online I should be getting a notification and should be able to view the devices at Places/Computer but so far, nothing. Googling this problem it appears that individual devices often don't work but I could not find anything on all USB devices not working.
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong here?

I've upgraded a P4 system from 8.04 to 10.04 and it hangs on boot saying it can't find root (/dev/md0).ALERT: /dev/md0 does not exist.I've added rootdelay parameters in case it was a timing thing and cat /proc/modules shows raid1 etc. (although no md ??).I noticed the md and raid1 modules weren't in the /etc/modules and /etc/initramfs-tools/modules - so i added them and did a: mkinitramfs -o <name> 2.6.32-22-generic
Oddly at the initramfs prompt when I type "reboot" I see it flash up with syncing md devices (or similar) just my /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 are not in the /dev partition (although the individual devices are - /dev/sda1 etc.).

I just upgraded, and when I rebooted I could see that it was booting but after the initial phase I got a blank screen.
I went to prompt and tried xrandr to which I got the error : Can't open display.
What does that mean, and how do I fix this? I guess that my monitor is not properly identified or is not identified at all.
Does anyone know what I can do?
Went to /etc/gdm to find xorg.conf but it is not there. In etc/X11 I have an xorg.conf
The contents are :
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection
Section "Screen"

I have a 60GB hardisk, and try to install CENOS 5.5 HEL5.5 and Fedora13 on it. I partitioned the harddisk to 4 primary partitions like below:
Partition MountPoint Type
sda1 /boot ext3
sda2 VGRHEL LVM PV
sda3 VGCENT LVM PV
sda4 VGFEDORA LVM PV
I created 3 Volume Groups as you see up: VGRHEL, VGCENT, VGFEDORA; under every VG, i created 2 logical volumes ,just like below: VGRHEL=LVRHEL00(swap) + LVRHEL01(MountPoint: /) Below VG try to partition them the same as VGRHEL too. VGCENT=LVCEN00(swap) + LVCEN01(MountPoint: /) VGFEDORA=LVFEDORA00(swap) + LVFEDORA01(MountPoint: /)
I successed installed RHEL5.5 on VGRHEL, but when i try to use the same way to install CentOS 5.5, i got below error infromation: "Bootable Partitions cannot be on a logical volume" I don't why this happened, VGRHEL has logical volume too, but why i can install RHEL on it successfully.
