View 1 RepliesI cannot find how to set VIM so that it higlight syntax (for exapmle bash scripts). I installed VIM package by using aptitude, but I dont have file .vimrc in my home directory. I found out that settings have to be written in this file. I can use command in VIM :"syntax on" but VIM shows syntax terrible. I think that is cause by some color setting.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have currently configured Postfix as an SMTP server. I would preferably not use a domain name in my email address, like so: myname@[1.2.3.4]
I'm currently testing to see how other mail servers handle this kind of address. When I sent a mail with one one of my gmail accounts, I see that the mail gets rejected due to bad syntax.
It seems as though Google is giving me a RCPT TO address like so: myname@1.2.3.4 However, the postfix server rejects this address with the following error:
501 5.1.3 Bad recipient address syntax
To my best knowledge the only way to have an IP address inside an email address with to write it as a domain literal [1.2.3.4].
My question: how to configure postfix to accept myname@1.2.3.4 as well?
I have put both [1.2.3.4] and 1.2.3.4 in "mydestination" and 1.2.3.4 in "virtual_alias_domains".
It doesn't seem to work so far though.
When ever i open vim, i get the error that the following error: E484: Can't open file/abcd/configFiles/vim/syntax/syntax.vim There was a .vimrc file in my home folder that i have removed.
Still i keep getting the same error. Presently in my home folder there is no .gvimrc or .vimrc file.
But still i keep getting the same error. I am not too sure where this file is mentioned.
Background info: The SHELL has been changed from tcsh to bash Earlier i had created a .vimrc file in tcsh, i have removed the .vimrc in bash SHELL.
I am a Novell (now defunct) CNE tring to learn Linux and am having a lot of trouble finding out where the WB 6-6 is wrong in the syntax for adding local4... the the syslog-ng config file. In the instructions there are discrepancies between commas and simi-comma, they are both in the statements in no particular order. there is no pattern to them. Here is what the book shows:
filter f_local4debug { level(debug) and facility(local4); };
When I try to input this in the Gnome terminal window to try and find out where it goes wrong I get the following: -bash: syntax error near unexpected token "(" If I can get the correct syntax I belive I can use the info to get past the rest of this portion of the lesson. I am desperate to learn Linux as the only jobs out there for a Novell CNE are migrations to MS, which really sucks, since MS really really sucks.
I've been looking though different editors for one that has good printing support. Ideally it should be able to print C++ code with line numbers, syntax highlighting, multiple columns per page, customizable fonts and sizes and a print preview feature so that I can make sure it looks right before sending it to the printer. It appears that notepad++ had at least some of these features, but it is not available on linux. The best I could do so far is to copy/paste the output of 'cat -n foo.cpp' into oowriter and format it into two colums. I don't get synax highlighting though and I have to manually replace tabs with a few spaces as well as some excessive leading spaces before the line numbering.

when I use e. g. cat file.txt | grep --color=tty "pattern" I get the pattern I search highlighted. When I want some more context around each hit, grep has the -A, -B and -C parameters. However, I want to display the whole file (or whatever command output) and highlight a certain pattern. Does such a highlight command or tool exist?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there a way I can write a file that contains the text which assigns variables, e.g. string="hello world" in a file say, variables.txt and have a shell script assign those variables locally e.g.

echo $string
and when I run the script I would get an output of
"hello world"

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a text editor / log manager of some kind that will automatically refresh a file's contents when it changes.
I have a single target log file (e.g. current.log) that is overwritten under certain circumstances and I'd like to be able to leave it displayed and not constantly have to re-open the file to get updates. Much the same as 'tail --follow=name' does in Linux.
I'm using a Windows desktop but it's a remote file so a Linux app would work just as easily.
i want to know good cd/dvd burner that support windows also..I want to mean that I can use that cd/dvd for nero also...i want to know a good photo editor/viewer also..i am using opensuse 11.1.

I would love to be able to use TrueCrypt consistently across all my machines, be they Windows or Linux. As it stands, I can do full-disk encryption with pre-boot authentication only on Windows.
I don't really understand why this is. Are there technical challenges specific to Linux/Mac that make full disk encryption harder? Does anyone know whether TrueCrypt will support this in the near future.
PS. yes, I'm aware that there are other options. My goal is to simplify my life here and use the one tool across all machines.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.
I have a HP laptop which can support 1600x900. But after I install ubuntu 9.10 on it, it can only support up to 1280x700. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card. And i am using GNOME as my desktop environment.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a project directory that contains source code and subdirectories of source code. I want to use the Unix program find to search recursively for the names of files of certain extensions. The versions of find on Linux and Mac OS X behave differently.
# Works in Linux
find . -type f -regex ".*.(py|html)$"
# Neither of these works in Mac OS X
find . -type f -regex ".*.(py|html)$"
find . -type f -regex ".*.(py|html)$"
How do I write this command so that it will run on Mac OS X (and hopefully on Linux too)?
I'm trying to sanitize this output from it's metadata to plug this output into GreekTools, but I am getting stuck on sed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor some commands the command synopsis (syntax) is given like this:
command [a|b] [args ...]
I take mplayer (perhaps not GNU) to illustrate the point:
mplayer [cdda|cddb]://track[-endtrack][:speed][/device] [options]
mplayer [dvd|dvdnav]://[title|[start_title]-end_title] [options]
An item inside square brackets is optional. The pipe sign is the 'or' logical connective (disjunction). But then, what is [cdda|cddb]?
If optional, I can omit it: it makes no sense because there are more the one possible synopsis for the command line.
