CentOS 5 :: Performance - High Context Switches - When We Run The App, Get This Up To The 500,000 CSs Per Second?

Dec 18, 2009

I have a user complaining about performance:-

Quote: At times on our server, during more-or-less idle moments, context switching is around the 2000-3000 mark. When we run the app, we can get this up to the 500,000 CSs per second. Not only this, but at the same time, the CPUs go to >60% system (the kernel is having to do all that context switching after all), leaving only around 30% for user space. We think it is a possibility that the massive context switching is contributing significantly to our performance issues.

The server is a HP DL580 G5 with 4 x Intel Xeon E7340 @ 2.4Ghz.My issue is that I don't know if the contect switching is a problem or not. From what i've read those values are not necesserilly cause for concern.

Server :: Nagios Performance - High Load Average

Jul 6, 2010

I have a Nagios server with a lot of hosts and services; around 400 services (in all) and 150 hosts. Most of these services are programmed in bash language. The problem is the server has a high load average; between 5 and 11. The server has the next features:

- Intel Xeon 2.66GHz Dual Core
- 4MB cache memory
- 1GB RAM memory
- 50GB hard disk

Is this load average normal? Should I program the plugins with C?

Ubuntu :: Ondemand Vs Performance - Increases The Clock Speed To Performance When The CPU Is Under Load

Jul 31, 2010

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

Debian :: Dual Boot - Parallel Computing

Oct 11, 2015

I was asked to research if it is possible to install a Debian distribution of Linux to HP Z420 Workstations as second OS (dual boot) in our lab. The lab is normally used for Computer Aided Design (Windows 7). The plan is to have parallel computing possible with these workstations on Linux side.

The link for HP Z420 Specs suggests amd64 distrubition should be supported. Tell me If I'm wrong as I have always been interested in software side of things.

Looking for info regarding installation of Debian to HP Z420 workstations as well as using these computers for parallel computing with Debian.

Fedora Servers :: Setting Up A Cluster For Scientific Computing?

Mar 2, 2010

I want to set up a cluster for scientific computing (mainly statistical stuff with R). I have a few conceptual questions. First, is there a difference between a Beowulf cluster and a cluster that has single-system image ("SSI," e.g. using openSSI or LinuxPMI)? If so, what's the difference? Second, if there is a difference between Beowulf and SSI, which one is better for scientific computing? Third, does using Eucalyptus make sense for scientific computing or is this more suitable for IO-oriented operations such as web service or databases

Ubuntu :: GPU Computing For Neutron/muon Beam Experiments?

Jan 25, 2010

Wanting to evolve current cluster to GPU-enabled and retain ubuntu (champion the cause!) Details below; ill share all results/successes here on the forum for any interested. How best to get started ? Heterogeneous cluster of 40 quads/dual-quads w/4,8,16Gb memory All running ubuntu 8.04 or 9.04 Quantum Mechanical computations supporting neutron and muon beam experiments on red-wine/green-tea anti-oxidants, etc... Success of this centure would be precision independent (for now) single-precision floats are fine for now. I am more concerned with getting it going and making compatible with current codes - less concerned with accuracy of results for now. Double prcision floats will come anyways with the Fermis.

Server :: Platform For Cloud Computing In Open Source?

Nov 9, 2010

I have a plan to deploy a private or public cloud computing. And I've been considering Eucalyptus, OpenNebula, Nimbus, vSphere, abiCloud and Joyent.

I'm very interested in Eucalyptus and OpenNebula, since they are both open source, they have many features, they both support Amazon EC2 and Amazon APIs and they seem to be able to work with different hypervisors, such as KVM, Xen, VMWare ESXi, etc.

Eucalyptus seem to be very supported by Canonical, because it can work with Centos Server, so I bet it will grow more and more, and we have a good experience with Linux and in particular redhat.

On the other hand, many people told me that right now OpenNebula is better. So the question is:

- which one between Eucalyptus and OpenNebula? The other three choices? vSphere is probably free (if we use ESXi and not ESX) but it's not open... abiCloud seems to be similar to Eucalyptus and OpenNebula... about Joyent, many people say very good things, but I want to know more, and then, is it open source? I mean here, can I use it as free ?

After having built the private cloud, we probably want to also use an external service and create an hybrid cloud. If for private cloud we chose OpenNebula,Eucalyptus, abiCloud or Nimbus I guess the best thing is to use Amazon EC2.

- Is it also possible to use VMWare solution?

- And if we chose abiCloud or Joyent, what can we use to create an hybrid cloud?

About Microsoft Azure and Google App Engine, it seems to me they have many limitations and I prevent it because it could be have a highly cost, so I'm not considering them.

Fedora Security :: Can't Forward My Kerberos Credentials To A Computing Resource

Aug 23, 2011

I can't forward my kerberos credentials to a computing resource before connecting to the resource for which I have kerberos credentials. In other words, from my machine at work I obtain my ticket with kinit -f to a computing facility off in some lab somewhere.

Then, I want to ssh to another machine in another department (I don't have control over the krb5.conf file or this would have been easy) where I work. It is on this machine I want to be able to ssh, scp, etc to this far off lab. I've tried several options around this barrier, but I'm a total failure thus far. I checked that GSSAPIAuthentication is set to yes.

General :: Sound Lacking High And Low End

Jul 1, 2010

Is this just a standard characteristic of Linux or is there some way I can EQ all the audio? I've had nothing but problems with audio sounding like a scratched record in Linux. It would skip, crackle and break up no matter the source or volume. Found a solution that one to simply remove PulseAudio.

I'm using Altec Lansing ADA885 speakers with 8" DVC subwoofer. System response is good down to ~28Hz but it sounds like a cheap boombox. Last time I had these hooked up to a Windows (XP Pro) system, the bass was deep and full. Very audible all the way down. Now it sounds like the audio is boosted at center frequencies and overly cut on high and low end.I even tried putting in a PCI Turtle Beach Santa Cruz 5.1 card and the sound did NOT improve.

General :: High Memory Utilization By System?

Nov 11, 2009

I have a server running samba process and there are about 70 samba users connected at a time. The system has 4Gb of memory and it seems each samba process is utilizing only 3352Kb of memory.
When I run the command
pmap -d (pid of samba)

It gives as:
b7ffa000 4 rw-s- 0000000000000000 0fd:00003 messages.tdb
bfe46000 1768 rw--- 00000000bfe46000 000:00000 [ stack ]
ffffe000 4 r-x-- 0000000000000000 000:00000 [ anon ]
mapped: 33384K writeable/private: 3352K shared: 20504K

But when I run the top command, it results as below:
Tasks: 163 total, 1 running, 162 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.9% us, 4.9% sy, 0.0% ni, 93.3% id, 0.8% wa, 0.2% hi, 0.0% si
Mem: 3895444k total, 3163192k used, 732252k free, 352344k buffers
Swap: 2097144k total, 208k used, 2096936k free, 2487636k cached

Why could the system be utilizing such high memory? By the way, the server is not running other processes. The samba version running in it is 3.0.33-0.17.

General :: High Load During Firefox Downloads

Nov 14, 2010

During downloads, the top command shows the Firefox process at 100% CPU. Yesterday I tried to download an .iso image. After a few hours the Firefox window would not refresh nor would it respond to input. I tried the wget command. It used negligible CPU time and completed in 28 minutes.

This problem is easy to reproduce because it happens every time I download a file in Firefox. It also happens when I use a fresh profile to run Firefox without any extensions or plugins.

This is Firefox 3.6.12 on Fedora 14.
