I've got bash 4.1.5(1) at the moment. I had bash 4.1.7(2) version in my university pc. Certain commands aren't working as it should in my version. Could anyone please tell me how to install bash 4.1.7(2) version in my pc? I'm using ubuntu 10.10 OS.
I am not sure which thread this fits in, I am facing a strange problem. There is a code tarball that I cross-compile on a Fedora Core 9 machine and it builds fine. But when I do the same thing on a (heavily used) Fedora Core 7 machine, the build keeps failing in the gnuapp folders grep, coreutils etc. I have tried 'make distclean', and clearing the config.cache but no impact.
Note: I export the PATH variable (to the local cross-compiler) before starting the build. The cross compilation is for the MIPS processor and GNU makefiles are used.
I would like to install a more modern version of GNU utils (coreutils) on a debian linux system where I have no admin rights. Is there a way to do that?
The rationale is that I need a more modern version to the one installed in the system where I intend to run my analysis. I am trying to use "sort -R" or "shuf" to randomize lines in a big text file.
I just need to edit the coreutils-5.97-12.1.el5.i386 file , i have extracted from bootable DVD,its not opening properly through wordpad / notepad. can any one tell how to view the contents of this file properly.
I was encountering a problem with tcsh/csh on FC 10 and decided to uninstall SELinux coreutils through the package manager. The process took quite long and when it was about to finish the screen started blinking and the keyboard was not responding. I rebooted but couldn't restart, the process stucks when the progress bar becomes white! I later tried the live CD and found out that coreutils have been removed too, so I installed them but nothing changed.
I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade
If your system will not detect new upgrades to ubuntu 10.10, you should edit a file in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.
Then you will notice new upgrades to Ubuntu 10.10 on your Ubuntu 10.04 system.. Solutionz.yolasite will guide to do it.. Click here to fix this with related screen shots and details
I installed Ubuntu a while ago when I didn't know the differences and because it says 33-bit was recommended. I have 6GBs of RAM and I can't use it all. Do I have to do a fresh reinstall or can I upgrade? If I have to do a fresh reinstall, is it possible to keep all of my settings by backing everything up? How do I find a free online backup program?
I am trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 beta. I tried ALT-F2 & ``update - manager -d'' but when Upate Manager opened, it did not give me the option of upgrading to 10.04 beta.
My story thus far:I have a working, fairly customized desktop environment running Ubuntu Studio 10.10.Yesterday, I literally wasted the entire day attempting to upgrade to, and then reverting from, Ubuntu Studio 11.04 (never forget to do a grub-install when restoring your system to a previous state from backups).I am not bashing 11.04! That is not the purpose of this thread, although I believe that Unity needs some maturity, and because of this I probably won't upgrade until the next LTS.
What I would like to know is this: Is there a way that I can get the various and sundry upgrade managers to stop telling me about the 11.04 upgrade availability? I'd really like to not see itI feel somewhat like a Luddite every time I do.
I tried to upgrade ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. It is almost complete downloading packages, but i get this error:Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...untu2_i386.deb The HTTP server sent an invalid Content-Range header [IP: 91.189.88.30 80]I tried to change from main server to US server, but I still get this error.
I have installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi its working fine but iam not getting upgraded to newver version after pressing Alt+f2 and filling update-manager -d I am getting the massage that no such file in the dictionary found.
I want to upgrade my current samba 3.4 version to 3.5. I try my best to search on other linux forum but not get simple steps solution of upgrading samba version..
I inadvertently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 earlier tonight and once the upgrade was complete and I restarted the system, I now get no video. I'm able to get to prompt with Ctrl-Alt-F1, but I'm not really sure what to do to fix this at that point.
The video on the system is an NVIDIA 6150SE. I know before this upgrade I was running the NVIDIA driver that was recommended once the initial install of 10.10 had completed.
I am just a couple of month into using any Linux OS and I use Ubuntu 9.10. I ordered for the Ubuntu 10.04 CD from Canonical to upgrade because I don't have a fast Internet connection to upgrade over the net.The problem is that when I insist the 10.04 CD into the tray it doesn't start the upgrade process. Please what can I do?

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:The package 'skype' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.
This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

When I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 using commandsudo apt-get dist-upgrade the following error is thrown:Setting up netbase (4.35ubuntu3) Installing new version of config file /etc/services.
I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.
Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?
I just upgraded to lucid and discovered a nasty bug. It prevents the system from booting and took me hours to resolve. Now I'd like to report it along with the workaround I found. The only problem is: Where? Other such bugs have been filed against "update-manager", but that's just the GUI calling some scripts which do the real work. so what do I do?What should I substitute for XYZ in
A friend installed Ubuntu 8.4 for me. I tried to upgrade to the current new version but it will stop at one point and say," Failed to fetch compiz-plugins_0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb. Hash Sum mismatch" and stop. I can separately download that very same file but it won't do it by itself.
how do I get it to work? I am just a windows user trying to learn to get away from Windows. This has been bothering me for the past ten days and each attempt ends at the same point.
I want to upgrade my ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 or 11.04 but I afraid of doing that because last time that I did it upgraded successfully but after restarting, it went to blank screen and I forced to install a new UBUNTU. unfortunately there was no other previous version of UBUNTU in boot option. My question is how can I update or upgrade my UBUNTU to another one with keeping all of last versions data(kernel,modules,drivers,....)that if new version does not recognize some thing I have other choice to boot my system from ubuntu boot menu.
