View 3 RepliesWhen I put a DVD in my PC (any DVD), it recognizes the DVD and even tells me the title of the movie (for example, it knows that I put Cat People in the DVD drive). But then it gives an error message, "An error occurred. Could not read from resource." I have Ubuntu 9.10 on a HP Pavilion ZE4900 laptop.

(Movie Player using GStreamer 0.10.19 and GNOME) how to play .ram file.
I recently installed Kubuntu, but I can't play back DVDs.
I also added handbrake and VLC, because I would like to rip my DVDs and I understand that I need libdvdcss.
I've followed various instructions on the forum for adding files from Medibuntu, but I still can't even play back a commercial DVD.
I have installed ubuntu 9.10 day before yesterday on my laptop Dell studio, When i try to play and video or audio in Application -> Sounds & Vedio -> Movie Player its unable to play anything and gives an error message as not supported.Do i need to install any external package?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI regularly use XBMC on my htpc. Everything seems to work just fine except that I cannot watch DVDs with it. It just never detects a DVD. If I insert a DVD with XBMC running, it just lets me browse the files. If I select the video files it plays some of them (depending on the DVD apparently). If I click on the play button it says that no disk is detected. There is nothing that I can see in the log file and seems relevant. I really don't know what to do. The computer is an HP z555. I just modified it by adding more ram and I changed the video card for an NVIDIA 8400GS. It is running Ubuntu Lucid and XBMC 9.11 installed from the PPA repository. The dvds play well with totem, vlc and mplayer
View 4 Replies View RelatedI thought I'd support Ubuntu and buy the Fluendo add-on from the app store. (I am running a fresh install of 10.10.) Whenever I put in a commercial DVD I get an "an error has occurred" message. How do I go about fixing this? I was under the impression that the ubuntu restricted extras would break fluendo, which is why I did not install them. Although during the install I did tell it to download the extra software there.

I am currently trying to play a VC-1 encoded MKV-file under Linux (Ubuntu 10 / latest Mint, both are affected), but VLC reports that it isn't able to decode WVC-1. VLC is able to play this file under Fedora 13, OS X and Windows, while both mplayer and ffplay are able to play this movie under Ubuntu 10 and Linux Mint.
I made two log files that where previously posted on the VLC forum, where I was told that it looks like there is a problem with the avcodec. I have basic experience with compiling stuff, but my knowledge of C++ and the linux internals is close to null. Which packages do I need to build from source in order recreate avcodec and its dpendendcies?

I have installed the LG BE08LU20 on five Centos servers during the past three months. Two HP ML115, two Dell T110 and mine which is an older Dell Dimension. All except one of the Dell T110 work fine. The BE08LU20 drive is used for 50Gb backups using mondoarchive. On the problem machine which has just been installed from scratch again, it will quite happily mount cd and dvds but not 50Gb BD-RE. I take the same BD-RE disk which it objects to and load it on my identical be08lu20 on a Dell Dimension with Centos 5.5 and it is recognized and allows writing. I swapped my working drive for the problem one but it makes no difference. The 'faulty' drive works perfectly correctly on mine. The OS is Centos 5.5 I have used the same DVD to install three machines with it. Two work including mine, but not the T110. Another customer with T110 also has a be08lu20 and mondoarchive with bd-re disks and theirs worked from the start. They have Centos 5.3 and up-to-date patches, but it should make no difference I've tried both usb and e-sata the result is the same. The centos 5.5 has kernel 2.6.18.194-el5PAE
If I load a bd-re disk in the drive and mount it - this is what I get
[root@localhost log]# mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
This is the log
Aug 25 00:33:17 gilmartin1 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2096896

There was another problem with this particular machine. I could install Centos, configure Samba and join the users to the domain without a hiccup. Then in the small hours of the morning (not always the same time) it just locked up, no kbd, no mouse, no display, no disk active, no network. Only solution was switch off and it would come up again quite happily with nothing logged and run without a problem for another 20-24 hours. Dell eventually agreed to replace the motherboard. I installed Centos again from scratch. It's been fine all week. The blu-ray problem has been there from the start, and has NOT been solved by the new motherboard.
Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend.
Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.
I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R.
Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?

The converse is also true, if I am using Rhythmbox, and then start ....., the video plays...but with no sound. I have to manually kill the app and web browser (tried multiple...Firefox, Chrome, Swiftfox) to get sounds working correctly. I am my wits end with this problem, and have just putting up with it for several months now.

Trying to COPY some of my DVDs, I've had tons of problems with the various applications such as K3B and Brasero (not putting them down though, just my experience). Recently I found the commands to use dvdbackup, and it worked perfectly. I can copy my DVDs easily and flawlessly. Really happy about that. Is there a command-line way of creating DVDs? I've got to say that using the terminal has been the most reliable and robust for me. Is there a way to create DVDs via the terminal? I'm running Ubuntu 8.1 on a Dell laptop.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a large number of paper sheets to scan. Instead of an autofeed or flatbed scanner, I'd like to use my photo camera. After a while, it occurred to me that instead of making a photo for each page, I could install the camera on a tripod, set it to record video and then extract the images from the video.
That way, I'd just have to handle the papers: Pick one, place it in front of the camera, wait a moment, replace it. Is there a Linux software to get all images without motion out of a movie? Kind of a non-motion-detection.
why can i not get the movie player to work
View 3 Replies View RelatedTo put it bluntly, mplayer is unable to correctly play video DVDs. It seems to correctly find the title and everything, but the picture is broken or not displayed at all, with messages like:
a52: CRC check failed!
a52: error at resampling
[mpeg1video @ 0xa8d840]sequence header damaged
[mpeg1video @ 0xa8d840]Missing picture start code
Now, this all is on amd64 Gentoo Linux system. I believe the problem is not in mplayer itself, since the playback also breaks in VLC or when i copy the VOBs via vobcopy and try to play them afterwards.
I use libdvdcss-1.2.10 and libdvdread-4.1.3_p1168 (current stable in Gentoo), and tried previous versions of both libs, but it didn't change a thing.
The DVDs I have tried play fine in regular DVD player or on a Windows laptop. I remember the playback used to work about a year ago and I don't know what to try next.
I occasionally need to burn about 1 Gbyte of files to a DVD, and transport them to a friend's house. It's really annoying to discover that some of the data is corrupt when I get there, due to a scratch on the DVD.I have tried copying the files to the DVD several times, creating a new directory for each set. It usually means at least one of every file is correct, but it's really annoying to have to verify every file is correct with md5sum or similar utility. What I want is a filesystem that will automatically give me the redundancy I want, even if it means I only get 1 Gbyte of storage space per DVD. When I read the files back, it will automatically fetch multiple copies of the file, and give me the correct data - sort of like the way RAID works, but with all of the data on the DVD. Does such a filesystem exist? Perhaps I could create three 1Gbyte partitions on my hard drive, mount them with raid, store the files, unmount the partitions, and then copy images of the partitions onto the DVD (mount them later with -o loop,ro options).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've Finally got round to retiring my old laptop which was serving as an XP based music player in the garage while I was working on the cars. Now I have the spare system I've been trying to give it new life with a stripped down OS with the intent of using it to play DVDs. I first tried cutting down the version of XP on it, however that failed, I then tried using ubuntu 10.04 but that was too slow and didn't recognise the peripherals. Then thought I'd give android a go as I had a disk of it literally lying round, but that wouldn't recognise the screen. Finally I've got fluxbuntu installed and it's really nice, now I just need some help trying to get it to do what I need it to.I'm going to have a go now at installing the MP3 and DVD decryption, wish me luck cause I'm a fat lazy windows user and not used to all this typing.Any other tips, hints or advice will be gratefully received.Yes I know I'm probably being overambitious trying to get this to play a DVD but if it doesn't work it gets down graded to MP3 player.
