I would like to make backups of my movie DVDs. I have tried xcdroast and brasero on my FC12 linux but they refuse to copy an encrypted DVD. What is available for free to copy encrypted DVDs?

I would like to create lossless backups of my DVDs, or more exactly the main movie including one or more audio tracks and a subtitle of my choice. I would like to have the subtitle burned into the movie so that I only have one file (container). No, I don't want a complete DVD folder (TS_Video and other stuff) nor do I want to create an iso file of the DVD. Is it possible? The way I see it there should be two options:
1. Extract the wanted audio track/tracks, one subtitle and the main movie. Keep the audio track/tracks and the movie track in their original formats, and put it all together in one file/container (subtitle burnt in). In theory it should work! I know the video tracks are mostly MPEG2 and the audio tracks mostly AC-3 or DTS.
2. Do almost exactly as above, but before putting it all together compress the video and audio tracks even further to some lossless formats. In theory this should work too! In some other forum a guy told me that since MPEG2 and AC-3/DTS are already compressed formats it probably isn't possible to compress audio and video much further without losses, which is probably true.
Is it possible to do what I want to do? How? If this process is not easy to do it would be nice if some of the skilled guys would create an application that does exactly this. I believe more than me would find it extremely useful.
Run DVD's on ubuntu 10.04 I need the add on to run dvd's on ubuntu 10.04. Now I get "error. could not read from resource."
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with K9Copy's back up system it cannot seem to shrink a DVD9 down to 4.7gb to fit on a standard 4.7gb DVD Disk, how to correct this? As it renders K9copy totally pointless for me.
PS: This issue didn't exist on Ubuntu 10.04LTS
When I put a DVD in my PC (any DVD), it recognizes the DVD and even tells me the title of the movie (for example, it knows that I put Cat People in the DVD drive). But then it gives an error message, "An error occurred. Could not read from resource." I have Ubuntu 9.10 on a HP Pavilion ZE4900 laptop.

I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, libdvdnav4, libdvdread4, libdvdcss2, gstreamer-plugins-bad, gstreamer-plugins-ugly.
I'm using a LaCie external DVD to (try to) play these. After inserting the DVD, I start up xine, which will play usually a brief introduction to the DVD (like the FBI warning, studio logo, maybe start up the menu) and then crash, giving the error message:

The last line of course varies with the DVD, and there are many of these messages (one per track, I think). Like I suspect, does this mean that xine doesn't realize that libdvdcss2 is there (or some codec)? If so, how do I tell it where to look?

The test DVDs play fine on a standalone player and a Windows laptopNow the problem: This machine (a Dell T3400, very boring) was upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04.1 64-bit to Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit a couple of month ago. Before the upgrade I was able to play and rip encrypted DVDs successfully using VLC and dvd::rip.
After the upgrade neither playing nor ripping works reliably. Some DVDs will play in VLC, but a lot will stop halfway through or close to the end of a track. I've not been able to rip any encrypted DVD at all. Usually dvd::rip will get a failure when it runs lsdvd to read the DVD's table of contents. If it gets past that it will inevitably freeze up part of the way through ripping a track.
I've booted the machine back into 8.04.1 64-bit from a USB key and verified that I can still play and rip DVDs that will not work in 10.04, so it doesn't seem like a hardware problem. As I say above, the DVDs work fine in other players and machines.The failures seem to be related to a libdvdcss seek error:

The block number will be different with different discs/tracks but it's usually some variation on this. I initially thought it might be this problem: [URL] but that patch seems to have been merged in ages ago. The attached logs show my attempts to run vlc, lsdvd and dvdbackup on both 8.04.1 (hardy.log) and 10.04 (lucid.log) with the same DVD ("The Shield", season 4 disc 3). As you can see there are a lot of errors logged by libdvdread3 on 8.04.1, but it does work eventually. No such luck on 10.04.

I've just set up a new desktop box with Debian Squeeze. I have Dragonplayer, Kaffeine, and VLC installed. I've got libdvdcss2 and w64codecs. however when I try to play encrypted DVDs I get errors with all three players. Here's the log from the last attempt with VLC:

I have Debian Jessie installed. When I insert a non-encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, a pop-up menu appears asking me what I want to do (e.g. "Open with vlc media player, etc.).
When I insert an encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, no pop-up menu appears.
I am able to play the encrypted movie DVD in vlc, and libdvdcss2 is installed. So my question is not about playing the DVD but rather about the failure to automatically detect it.
This behaviour happens in Gnome, Mate, and XFCE. (KDE has a Plasma Device Notifier Widget that is able to detect the encrypted DVD).
My other computer with Debian Wheezy is able to automatically recognize the encrypted DVD.

Granted, this issue is not a major problem as I can start vlc and play the DVD. However, it might be useful to some new users to Linux to have the pop-up menu appear. Additionally, it would be interesting to learn why it works in Debian Wheezy and not in Debian Jessie.
It has been such time that I have been making back-up copies of my DVDs using dvdrip. Lately I tried to back-up DVD of Iron Man2 and was surprised to see so many titles under Table of Contents. 93 titles of which re all running 2 hours plus. And so I ripped the recommended one which is the longest running title. Surprisingly, the output is all screwed up. Meaning scene one is at the end along with some scenes from the middle of the film and so on. Is there any way to correctly choose which of the 93 titles is the right one please? Obviously, I can't go through the motions of doing it one by one. Or would it be more practical to just copy the whole DVD image and burn in another DVD instead of making a HD back-up?

I've been using 8.04 on an old laptop for quite a while and have been able to watch encrypted DVDs, as I have installed all the proper drivers.
But suddenly, every time I insert an encrypted DVD, it will mount and I can see the name of it and browse the files, but neither MPlayer nor VLC will play it.
I know the drive works, because if I boot into XP I can watch them there.
I already tried reinstalling the drivers and am out of ideas.
I have a system which i installed on usb flash (doesn't matter why). The system has 3 partitions: "boot", "/" and "swap". "Swap" and "/" are encrypted by LUKS. "Swap" is encrypted by random key, "/" - by passphrase.
I created this system only to make a liveDVD from it (not liveUSB).
To achieve this goal i installed program called "Systemback" (fork of Remastersys).

So i pushed the button 'Create live system' (or Live system create, don't remember exactly) and configured it to automatically convert .*sblive to .*iso
Program made it's work and i burned image in DVD.
But when i launch it i have this:
The last picture - is when i trying to startliveDVD with installed LVM2. No difference except one message.
I went to freenode and ask some questions. Somebody told me that maybe the problem is in LVM. But LVM was already installed, so i installed LVM2. No result.
How can i make the system that is encrypted by LUKS work from DVD? And is it really possible? Maybe systemback doesn't support feature to make live-image of encrypted system?
The system is Debian 8.1.0
I did the same with nonencrypted system - result is succesfull, liveDVD works.
I've been a DOS/Windows guy for 20 years, and recently became a SW test lab helper. My company uses CentOS for a lot, so I've become familiar with it, but obviously not as comfortable as I am with Windows.
Here's what I have planned:
machine: Core 2 Duo E8400, 8GB DDR2, 60GB SSD OS drive, ATI 4650 video card, other storage is flexible (I have 3 1TB drives and 4 750GB drives around that can be used in this machine.)
uses: HTPC, Network Storage, VMWare server host: SMTP, FTP server, and Web server virtual machines
I've figured out how to do much of this, but I haven't figured out how to do backups in Linux. I've been spoiled with Windows, with the built in backup system so simple to use. I find myself overwhelmed with the array of backup software, and unable to determine which to use. none of them seem to do everything I need them to do, but some come close, I think. I'm hoping someone here can help me out in figuring out which program to use and how to use it.
Here is what I need the backup software to do:
1. scheduled unattended backups, with alerts if the backups fail
2. a weekly full backup with incremental every 12 hours
3. removing the old backups when the new full backup runs, I would prefer to keep 2 weeks of backups, but that's not necessary
4. a GUI would be preferable, since my arthritic fingers don't always do as I want them to do. I typo things a lot, and the label worn off my backspace can attest to that.
How do you get Rsync to do incremental backups rather than full backups? At the moment I have a script that will create a backup folder (if it doesnt already exist) then copy the source files into the backup directory with the command
rsync $VERBOSE --exclude=$TARGET/ $EXCLUDE --exclude '/Ls-wtgl1c8/**' -rt --delete $source/ $TARGET/$source/ >> $LOG_FILE
Target is where the files will be backed up to Sources is the dir(s) to be backed up Exclude files is the list of files not to backup
log file is where the output will be saved to. At the moment it only does full backups, but I would only like to do incremental, how would this be achieved? Am I missing out an option in the Rsync that is required.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on my laptop with the entire 500gb setup as encrypted LVM. This has worked well for several months with no problems. During this time i have been backing up the data to an external usb drive (1tb) on a regular basis. The usb drive was not encrypted. So, I thought it would be a good idea to encrypt the backup drive too. I wiped out the backup drive and set it up as one large encrypted lvm and mbr. This seemed to work fine but immediately afterwards I decided to erase that and set it up as encrypted lvm guid instead of mbr. I couldn't delete it while logged into my desktop so i decided to do it from a bootable gparted usb stick. In gparted i erased the 1TB backup drive once again and planned on setting it up the way I wanted once I was logged back into my ubuntu desktop. Now I cant boot into my desktop with the following errors:
cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available b0d) does not begin with /dev/mapper/
Then after waiting for a few minutes I get an error followed by (initramfs)
When booting from a live version of ubuntu the 250MB boot patition is recognized and 500 partion is there but it is labeled as empty/unused.
Also, I did choose to use the exact same passphrase as what is used on the main bootable drive when I set up the encrypted partition on the external 1TB drive.
I've just started using ubuntu one. However, some of the files I store on there are sensitive so I encrypt them using seahorse. Right click, encrypt etc etc. My question is, is there a way to automatically get the encrypt process to delete the un-encrypted file when it makes the new encrypted copy?

Suse (KDE) on the family computer reads them with no problem?? I'm confused. Is there something that KDE has that Debian doesn't. there's nothing wrong with my system exept for this. Reads cd's and dvd's.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a crontab related question which I am hoping someone can answer. I recently took over a Redhat Enterprise 5 Server, and I was told by the previous Server Admin that there is a cron job that does the backups. I ran the following command to get a list of all users:

cat /etc/passwd | grep "/home" |cut -d: -f1
I then ran the following command for each of those users to see if they have any crontabs associated with them:

crontab -u USER -l
It doesn't show any crontab entries for any users (including root). But I am positive that there is a scheduled job somewhere because the backups are still running every night.
With so many filesystems available which one should I use to make backups? All I care about is reliability and stability. I don't care at all about portability.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was doing some downloads of ISO's to burn & try on another machine. I went to use FF & it wouldn't open. I thought what the heck, I just use it. So in the process of checking I ran it in a terminal & got this error:

Plus my lvm's were giving me fits so I ran "touch /forcefsck" & it found a bunch of crossed files. In the process of "fixing" I believe that my backup images may have been in that crossed mess as all the 1 of 2 files are "zeroK" files now. I think I have the lvm fixed (for now, as that piece of junk acts up every whipstitch) so how do I get my FF working again?
I tried a "reinstall" with no luck. I found out I have a bigger problem as well. It seems that the "zeroK" file thing got my backups I need to restore my machine to do my homework under my XP & such. Is there a way to recover these files (that I don't know of) or am I screwed like I think? - needless to say, if I have to rebuilt the F10, there won't be any of that LVM junk!
As you know everywhere we create a new file ,immediately a backup file with suffix ~ will be created with it if we open the file , i deleted a file but always i have problem with its backup how can delete them with deleting the file?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI currently have a setup which allows me to connect to all computers on my home network via SSH and RSA keys. I'm very security-conscious, so all of my keys are passphrase protected. I'd like to essentially set something up where I'm running Unison on a cron job to back up to a file server on my network, which we'll call timmy. I've noticed that the first time I try to use a key on my Ubuntu laptop teeks, I get a dialog which pops up asking me to type in my key passphrase. I've heard that for servers needing to make automated backups like this that one should use ssh-agent to ask for the key passphrase on login/server start. How can I set this up on teeks?
I'd essentially like to have the following happen:When I boot and come into the OS, prompt visually for the passphrase as is done when I first use a key.If I SSH into this computer (as it's internet-facing) and I haven't provided the SSH passphrase yet, then prompt for it. (Sometimes, I might need to remotely reboot the machine over SSH, so I'll be SSH'ing into it after it reboots and I'd like to be able to authenticate the key without having to VNC in and do it manually.)
What will it be? I will use Clonezilla as the backup software, but I want to be able to see the backups from both Linux and windows.
Is fat32 an option? I have very large files(game isos and stuff like that)
If fat32 isn't an option, what filesystem should I use?
I read this thread but it doesnt mention the software to use and I assume we wants only to be able to see it in Linux.
What would be the best way to have automated system backups? I'm trying to get it so my Xubuntu box automatically backs up the entire system including user settings on regular intervals, what would be the best way to do it? I have 2 hard drives with one that I do not use that I'd like to backup to.
