General :: How To Stop Files Moved - From Windows Via USB Being Marked "executable"?
Sep 27, 2010When I move files from Windows to Linux using a USB drive, all files are marked as executable. Then double clicking on a ".txt" file gets you the ridiculous dialog box asking whether you want to display the file or execute it. (NOTE: The /etc/fstab entry for the USB mount includes the "noexec" option already and it hasn't helped.) Now that my wife and daughters are moving files back and forth between the two OSs, I'm getting pestered for a solution to this and I haven't been able to track anything down. Yet.
What can one do -- presumably on the Windows side of the transfer -- to prevent these files from being marked executable? Or is it a hopeless problem caused by some dainbread decision made by a Windows developer?

Jun 20, 2010I am running into a snag on .exe files in Lucid. I have Wine installed, but I can not open the file as it is blocked from executing with a window popping up telling me that this file was blocked due to security reasons. I go into the files properties and try to change the permission but that does not help. Is there a way to get around this? Possibly in the terminal as root?

I dont get it. The file is clearly there, yet when trying to execute it bash doesn't seem to recognize it.
It has permissions rwxr-xr-x and is not owned by root. Am I overlooking something?

Feb 18, 2010In a project I'm working on with a few other people, I got the task of writing an assembler. The last thing I do is convert the commands into a binary representation, and jam it into a file. Now one of my teammates said he'd like to be able to "reference" the code within another program. He said he'd be able to do this if the file I output is a Linux object file. I'm thinking it'd also work as an executable. Anyway, he said he'd like to be able to grab the file and reference the binary by address. I'm still fuzzy on this, and if you're confused with what I said here, please tell me so I can ask him for better details.Anyway, I'm aware that gcc can compile files to ".o", but that's only for C/C++, and my file is just binary. I'm also aware of "ld", but I haven't seen any use of it to help me. I'm happy to hear suggestions as to what I can do. If anything, I think I'll implement a few functions to grab the bits and hand them to him in an array or something.

Apr 29, 2011I was messing around with my newly installed Archlinux, in a virtual machine (thankfully not my main computer) and now I cannot boot up. The issue is, I read that I could add commands in the rc.local file so that they would be automatically executed after booting up... so, I added the "pacman -Syu" command there, but it usually asks for a confirmation to continue, and that's why I think it is getting stuck there (it gets stuck just after running the daemons).
So, is there a way to stop the rc.local file to be loaded at startup?
General :: Configure RTorrent To Stop Downloading After Certain File Size
Aug 26, 2010I am looking for a way to configure rTorrent to stop downloading all torrents after they have downloaded x amount. For example, specify 15mb and as soon as the torrent reaches that size have it finish downloading the pieces it has requested and then start seeding partially completed. The reason for this is I'm trying to come up with a way to build ratio on a site where torrents are added very fast and at a very high frequency.
I download and add the torrents to rTorrent automatically via RSS, but I only want to download a small amount and seed that small piece while there are still a lot of people in the swarm (swarm drops off very quickly) and come out with a positive ratio from that small piece, beating the ratio clock so to speak. I thought it would be an interesting all be it somewhat impractical exercise in shell scripting, if rTorrent can be hooked into like that, documentation is sparse in some areas.
