General :: Sshd Accepts Root Login Without Password?

I'm trying to figure out why my industrial appliance (x86, running kernel 2.6.21.7 and OpenSSH_4.3p2 / OpenSSL 0.9.7m) accepts ssh connections without asking for a password (even for root)!When I log on to the local console as root I have to enter a password but strangely this prompt won't appear using a ssh connection (although I'm not using any client certificates).Of course that not acceptable but I just can't find the related configuration entry to disable this "password-less" authentification.Is this related to the sshd or has it something to do with the PAM module?

I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server.What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?

I edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....
I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....
I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...

Ok I am new to all this, I did have a server years ago but have forgotten most of what I learned. My problem is getting ftp to connect to the server. I have centos and it has proftpd but I'm lost when it comes to the conf file. I created a user in plesk but when I try to connect with any ftp software it accepts the username but rejects any password. I have tried a million combinations but I just can't get my head around this. I have used it before many years ago and managed ok but that was using webmin. I feel I've bitten off more than I can chew with this server although I have managed everything else

Whenever I login to a certain server using SSH I get a very long delay before a prompt appears. Everything I looked up on this issue says that it's a DNS issue and that I should disable reverse DNS lookups on the server.
But, the remote server is a shared webhosting server. I e-mailed the sysadmins but they say they have no DNS issue and that they won't change the server configuration. So, how can I fix this issue from my side (client side)? I have a static IP address and a hostname that points to it.

Found a major security hole in one of my more crucial linux servers today. (Only locally) I can use the user name "root" and any string for the password. So I can literally type "poop" as the password and the server lets me in. I know how to set root password settings for SSH and sudo, but where are settings located for local access that would allow something like this?

I just receive news from my superior. He said he cannot login to system Red Hat using root password.So when i check, someone change root password. I restart server and login as single user. Can't seem to do it, wondering if anyone knows how? Normally there's something in sshd_config that can be switched to true or yes to allow root login but I can't see it in fedora 12.I can login via root at a terminal no problem, just not via ssh, I get access denied every time. Also, I need to login using password authentication.I've done: 227169 but that's just for GUI which I don't really need since I rarely ever log into the GUI.I have also searched through here and mostly only found info such as above, how to enable root login for GUI, or billions of posts about how logingin as root is bad but I cannotswer to my question.DISCLAIMER: Please do not reply to this thread if all you can contribute is the question of why I need root or to put some message telling me I can do everything using su, etc, etc. Please only contribute if you can answer my question. I am new to ubuntu and I've installed it but I didn't use it too much. Now I was trying to login into ubuntu but I forgot the root password. Can I login into ubuntu or change the root password. I didn't make any other user than the installation were asking me. If I try to reinstall the ubuntu, the setup will help me to choose the same partition (to overwrite on the previous ubuntu)?

Suddenly Debian started rejecting my user pw and I have to login as root. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but this started when I re-booted after adding Russian keyboard layout in etc/default/keyboard. The Russian keyboard added successfully.
Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.

Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?

I was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

I set up a debian lenny in vmware on my windows machine. The network interface is set to bridged, so the virtual machine is connected directly to the university network i am connected to. I want to be able to ssh into the vm.I installed sshd via "apt-get install ssh", generated a key pair with puttygen and copied the public part to "/home/user/.ssh/authorized_keys", set rights to 600 and then tried to disable password authentication completely, following the "securing debian" documentation.this is how my /etc/ssh/sshd_config looks now:

I want to enable sshd from Internet, but I want to secure it as much as possible.Therefore, despite the fact that the service will run on a tcp port above 2000 to prevent most scans, I would like to :- First, force the use of a client certificate, to avoid brute force attack on my users/passwords- second force the use of a username/password to avoid someone having access to my system just by stealing my key..When I look at the configuration, it's possible to enable both, but one of them is sufficient to login, but I can't find how to make them both mandatory...

I have no idea what happened to my OS(ubuntu10.04).it doesn't give me any option to enter my login name & passwd.i just get a blank(default) login screen.last time when it worked,i was trying to install GTK+2.8,but due to my mistake i deleted glib using cmd (sudo apt-get purge glib)and after that i even tried to launch terminal but it failed to launch.also tried to play media files using vlc but it didn't work.so i tried to restart my os and finally got stuck in the problem.i have no idea what to do,please help.Is there any cmd to see what problem occurred or which package is missing.

i just installed linux mandriva 2009. i set password for root and created a user account. when i try to login as root, after logging out as user, it does not allow me and gives the error "root logins are not allowed". even it does not show the root account. if i try to go to root from konsole terminal using su root, it allows to enter as a root but when i try to start the GUI with startx it gives error.not sure what to do and why i can't see my account in GUI mode

I've set up password-less login for user1 on a Ubuntu machine to login automatically into a Fedora box using the publickey authentication method. Everything is working smoothly. Now, there is a user2 on Fedora but he does not have an account on Ubuntu.
I tried to login as user2 from Ubuntu to but got the following error :

Predictably neither scp or sftp work either. I have several questions as a result.
1.Is the SSH server rejecting user2 login because I am inadvertently using user1 keys (as I am logged in as user1) ?
2. Do I need to have a user2 account on Ubuntu and public/private key authentication setup with Fedora for user2 to be able to login ?
3. Is there a method I can use to password login as user2 from Ubuntu to Fedora (even though there is no user2 account on Ubuntu) AND still keep password-less login for user1 or do I have to have password-less login for both ?
At present the only way to access the user2 account from Ubuntu is to SSH using the user1 account and then su to user2.
