Ubuntu Security :: Configure The Share And Folder So That The Win7 Client Can Create Files And/or Folders In The Share?
Jan 15, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

Mar 19, 2010Ok, this is a complicated one, and possibly not entirely a linux question, but here goes-
I have a Synology server, set to backup to an external USB disk. As I understand it this disk is formatted as ext3.
The server recently crashed, so I need to get the data off the USB disk.
Weird thing 1: if I used an ext3 reader for Windows, then I can only see directories on the USB disk, no files. Yet if I mount it back on the (now crashed, but still just about bootable) Synology, then I can see all the files just fine.
Since I can see the files on Synology I figure the Windows ext3 reader is faulty. So I copy all the files to a spanky new QNAP NAS. Telnetting into the NAS I can see everything is present and correct and all the data is there. Great!
Weird thing 2: If I try to access the data via a Samba share, I can't see any of the files. Only directories!
Weird thing 3: I tried to make it all completely open by chown to my user and the "everyone" group, and then chmod uga+rxw *. This made no difference.
Weird thing 4: If I select "show hidden operating system files" in Windows then all the files appear.
Are there some weird "extra" permissions that Synology are using? If so how can I get rid of them? Anybody have an idea what is going on?
My worst case is I'll have to boot the Synology back up and copy the files via that, but I'd like to know whats going on. Oh and black mark to Synology here for making a backup that is hard to use on anything but the original system.

May 8, 2011Networking Problem Fedora 14 2.6.35.12-90.fc14.i686. I am trying to share files between 2 Fedora 14 computers , a desktop and a laptop, both located on my local DSL server. The laptop sees its public files and the public files folder on the desktop computer - looks fine. The desktop computer acts differently. Both systems show an entry of "unknown type" in the directory listing, for the public files directory. But whereas a right click on the directory entry on the laptop offers "open" the same operation on the desktop computer offers "open gedit". When I double click the entries on the laptop, entries appear on the main screen. If I double click the entries on the main screen, the directory contents are displayed. But, if I doubleclick the directory entries on the desktop computer 1- I get a black box that says there has been a crash in gvfs-1.6.6-1.fc14 and an error message box tells me Dbus error org.freedesktop.DBus.ERROR.NoReply: Message did not received a reply.

General :: Share A Large Number Of Files Into Chroot Env?
Aug 17, 2010I understand that chroot is usually used to provide security, however, for my issue, security is a big don't care. I am very new to using chroot and don't fully understand how the chroot'd env works.
problem: Trying to use a vendor supplied cross compile environment. The environment runs as a chroot'd env and works just fine. I have a large number of additional modules that I wish to compile in the chroot'd environment. FYI, these modules are also (succesfully) compiled for other targets not using chroot'd env's. Copying the source files into the the chroot environment is not an option (don't have hours to wait for copies to finish and it would break the make system). Having them live in the environment is also not an option (the chroot build is a tiny part of the build process and we cannot revamp our entire source tree to accommodate it).
I am looking for a way to have the compiler in the chroot'd env have access to a path that is outside of the env and typically higher up in the same path that holds the chroot'd env. I have tried soft links (they don't work as expected). Hard links only work for single files and there are 10's of thousands of files that would need to be linked. I am not sure how I would go about exporting the additional files and then mounting the exported files in the chroot'd env (or if that would even work).

Jul 19, 2011I had to copy some files from terminal to a folder in /usr/share/foldername so I did sudo cp -r something/ /usr/share/foldername which worked, but when I wanted to do it in Gnome, it kept saying I have no permission. How do I do it so it asks for permission, or how do I do sudo + task in Gnome ?

Jan 26, 2010Just go myself a new computer and thinking of how set it up. I have win7 HP and will probably install at least some version of Ubuntu on it shortly to have dual boot. Might come other Linux distros too in the future. I have a 1TB HDD and my question is what's the smartest way to share files on all OS's? In what format?
I was thinking of ~100GB for Windows for apps and games etc. ~20-50GB for Ubuntu and some third partition, where I store my common files like media, pics, docs, downloads and stuff, taking the rest of the free space.
What filesystem should the shared partition be? Is there some smart way to get windows home directories and linux home directories to point to the same place on the shared partition or would it be recommended to just keep them separated?

Aug 20, 2009Using SUSE 11 with Gnome. I mounted a CIFS share from a Windows server as /mnt/win. With the file browser, I can browse to file system/mnt/win and then the files and folders of the Windows share come up fine and I can open them. When I use the file browser to browse to network, the server hosting this share is listed. Then I browse to that server and it lists no shares (nothing at all). I can't go any further than the server. Is there a separate authentication necessary for the file browser to see this share from the network place?

Feb 19, 2010I can't seem to figure out how to even share files between my laptop and desktop. They are both Ubuntu 9.10. I thought maybe samba was the way but couldn't figure it out. I was looking at the ssh that comes with Ubuntu and been trying to get it to work but don't know what I'm doing wrong. I type: ssh username@computername and it give me a little info. Don't know what I'm suppose to do then. I looked at the network folder on my laptop and it seem to see it but everytime I click on it ask for a password and I can't get in since I don't know the right password. I'm not sure if this is the best software to use or not. Just wanted something to look at and transfer from my desktop to my laptop and vice versa.
