General :: Preparing A PC With RHEL 4?

Jun 15, 2011

I am planning to install Oracle 10g Express Edition on Linux.

1. Can I buy a PC with Red Hat Enterprise RHEL 4? If so, where can I get it? Usually store sells PC with Windows on it.

2. If I am supposed to buy a PC with Windows and install Red Hat Enterprise RHEL 4, then where can I obtain RHEL 4?

Slackware :: Preparing For 13.37: 32 Or 64 Bits?

Apr 8, 2011

I had an old laptop which ran Slackware-current, but it died. As a replacement I got a great Toshiba Qosmio laptop with Win7 SP1.

Now 13.37 is nearing, and I would like to install it on a dual-boot setting with Win7.

My previous laptop was a 1.5 GHz Celeron M single core, 32-bit only. You might guess it wasn't exactly a speed demon.

However, this laptop has as a CPU a Centrino Intel Core 2 Duo T5450, which is 64-bit capable. Therefore, I would like to ask the following:

* Which one is better: 32 or 64 bit Slack?

* If the answer is 64 bit, what is the difference multilib makes?

* If I choose to install the 64-bit version of Slack, should I take some special precautions, or are there some things I must have in mind regarding its difference with 32-bit Slack?

Notes:

1. When I talk about 64-bit Slack, I'm meaning the official 64-bit Slackware Linux (i.e., not BlueWhite64 or similar).

2. When I am speaking about multilib, I'm meaning the multilib setup of AlienBob.

Slackware :: Preparing For 13.37: How To Dual Boot

Apr 7, 2011

I had an old laptop which ran Slackware-current, but it died. As a replacement I got a great Toshiba Qosmio laptop with Win7 SP1. Now 13.37 is nearing, and I would like to install it on a dual-boot setting with Win7. In my other laptop, I dual-booted it with XP SP3, and I remember partitioning the HDD, then putting LILO on the first sector of the root partition (instead of putting it on the boot sector). Now, I have to dual boot it with Win7 and therefore I ask: What is the best strategy for dual-booting? Are there some caveats that I need to be aware of?

Software :: Preparing System To Install Qouta?

Mar 24, 2010

I wanted to configure my server for users that can have access to php/mysql database but with the limited harddrive space i have
i cant do unlimited space per user. So i decided to install qouta, i got this guide from : [URL] But in this guide that tells me to configure my system partitions to use qouta its says i should edit fstabs. Quota support is enabled as the filesystems are mounted, and so it must be specified in the options section of your /etc/fstab file. Specifying the quota options is as simple as adding usrquota for per-user quota, or grpquota for per-group quotes in the options column. For example this first entry without quotas:

/dev/hda1 /home ext2 defaults 1 1

Would become the following with per-user quotas enabled:

/dev/hda1 /home ext2 defaults,usrquota 1 1

Once this has been added you can remount the partition by rebooting, and install the software. This will setup the partitions to be mounted with quota support enabled, however you haven't enabled them for the running system.

My current fstab:

Code:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

[code]....

As far as my knowledge goes my /home/ directory entry is located on /dev/hda2/ where the / parition is mounted.

1. What do i put in my fstab. Do i edit it use quota on /dev/hda2 (Where my root partaition is mounted). ?

2. How do i get to know on what partition (/dev//dev/hda2?, /dev/hda2?.) my home directories of the users are?

3. Can i reload fstab without having to reboot my machine? (I like keeping my uptime as high as possible )

4. Do i need to know any more stuff that u guys can give me involving risks of badly configuration or handling this matter?

Ubuntu Installation :: Preparing To Dual Boot Windows 7 + 10.10?

Nov 30, 2010

In a few days I'll be getting Windows 7 and a new hard drive, hoping to dual boot W7 and 10.10. I'm really just looking for confirmation before I go ahead and install anything and mess things up. I have three hard drives. Windows will go on a 1TB HD, Ubuntu will take up part of a separate 500gb drive, and the other 500GB is NTFS storage. Installing both OS from scratch, so I'll format those disks with gparted before installing Windows and then Ubuntu. How should I format the Windows disk? A single primary NTFS partition?

And for Ubuntu, does this look right?:

15gb primary ext4 for root
XXGB ext4 for /home
4gb swap (to match RAM)

Am I missing anything?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Preparing A DVD+RW Disc For Writing - Mount: You Must Specify A Filesystem Type

Jun 15, 2011

I'm trying to mount an external DVD +RW Drive so I can burn a directory from my Linux Server to disk. I think I've figured out how to mount the drive, but it only works when there's a disk with data in the drive. When I enter mount /dev/scd1 /mnt I'm able to read from the drive, no problem. When I try to do the same thing, however, with a blank disk I get the following message: "mount: you must specify a filesystem type" So I'm assuming I need to prepare the disk somehow. I've verified that the dvd+rw-tools package is installed on the RH server but I'm not sure what the next step is.

CentOS 5 :: Pirut/yum: RHEL 5.1 - Maintain An Unregistered RHEL Box?

Feb 16, 2010

A client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software. My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.

This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.

Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.

Red Hat :: Duplicating A RHEL 5.1 32bit Server On RHEL 5.4 64 Bit

Dec 9, 2009

I have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

Ubuntu Installation :: Hangs Infinitely At "Preparing To Install Netbook"?

Oct 16, 2010

I'm using a EeePC 1000H and wanted to upgrade 8.10 to 10.10.[URL].. I chose to do a new install.

The following partitions are present:

- WindowsXP, 2 NTFS partitions
- ext3 where 8.10 sits. It is of EasyPeasy-flavour (no other version available at that time)
- hidden partition where WinPE resides

I downloaded the ISO and put it on a USB stick (4GB). Booting works fine. Using it as a live-system works fine as well. Problem came when I want to install it. The process hangs at "Preparing to install Ubuntu-Netbook" after clicking "forward". Nothing happens afterwards. In the menubar a crash-report detected-notification appears, saying: Quote:

The problem cannot be reported: The program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be retrieved. Apport does not support reporting these crashes Unfortunately no other information available.[URL].. but not the same hardware. The thread there seens bot to be of much use anyway, therefore this new post.

Red Hat :: How To Dual Boot RHEL 5.2 And RHEL 5.4

Sep 25, 2009

Environment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.

So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.
