General :: Nvidia - Can Play HDMI 1.4a 3D Stereoscopic Content
May 16, 2011
I'm aware that there are no Bluray players for Linux but I'm wondering if it's possible to play Full 3D HD (1080p, Side-By-Side) MKV files (or Bluray BDMV folders, etc).
Full 3D HD files are actually two 1080p frames "side-by-side" so the effective resolution is 3840x1200. In order to play these properly the software needs to switch to TV into 3D mode (or however HDMI 1.4a works).
I don't think simply playing the 3840x1200 resolution file will work so are there any options out there?

I recently built a new computer and got an evga 570GTX (Nvidia)I was using windows 7 pro that I got for free from school (MSDN or something) but it was crashing every 5 minutes. I could get on a play a game for 4 hours, but cuz cursing around or surfing the web was crashing all the time. Complete freeze. Couldn't start the task manager, number lock and caps lock jammed ect...
I was starting to think it was my MOBO failing because of the reviews until I installed ubuntu and everything was fine, no crashing no bull$#!7 no evil sauce.
Only problem was I installed 10.04 and fought it for a day with no luck installing the graphic card drivers but today I installed 10.10 and it picked up the nvidia drives right away.
Now the only problem I am having is audio.
In Windows I could play audio over the HDMI cable but in ubuntu I cannot.
I've tried using a headphone cable and that doesn't work either, and I know it's not the cable or the green sound port on my MOBO because other speakers work in the port, headphones work, all the cables work ive tested them on other computers and speakers and in cars, so the only thing left is the OS. I want to be able to play audio from the computer over the hdmi cable to the TV.
I've played around in the sound settings for hours... NOTHING.
I dont get how something as simple as audio over HDMI or a headphone jack/cable can be done by windows and not UBUNTU!

My DVD will not play DVD's. I can only play cd's/music. The drop down box tells me that an additional plugin is required to play the dvd content and do I want to search for this now. Naturally I said yes. The next drop down box says that search could not find plugin in any configured software source. I have been to www.liba52.sourceforge.net and found ; a52dec-0.7.4.tar.gz I'm not too confident about using this, but have it in my 'home' file on the desktop. If anyone thinks it is ok, how to install it. If its not ok, can you tell me how I can obtain the appropriate plugin. I have Fedora 10 installed. The DVD is a Pioneer 104.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Firefox 3.5.8 and Flash player 10.0.45.2.When my wife accesses Citibank's website, the flash content does not 'play' automatically. If I right-click and select play (see attached screenshot) things work normally. How do I configure firefox to play the flash content automatically, either globally or on a per website basis?

I have a Nvidia GTS 450 GPU with HDMI. I want to have the audio on my TV that's connected with HDMI cable. But for some reason I'm not able to get the audio working. The card has its own audio chip. In Yast and pulseaudio I can see the card. But when I select it for playing audio it will not play on my TV.
Changing the cable doesn't work and don't know what to do. Every thing on the internet I have tried doesn't work. Here are some settings (if you need more just ask): Using openSuSE 11.4
Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards

HDA NVidia at 0xf7f78000 irq 21
1 [NVidia_1 ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia

I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. The strange thing is that everything works fine in a Live disc, but once I do a fresh install of that Live disc I get no sound, even though my configuration is exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.

Because of some kind of mismatch between the latest X-server and nvidia drivers which crashes recent versions of the xserver, I've downgraded with a clean install of mythbuntu 10.04.
Trouble is, now I'm getting no sound through the hdmi to the tv. When I try aplay -l I get info for sound card 0 (HDA Intel), but nothing is showing for soundcard 1e So it's not seeing the card, so I can't configure it.

I have seen several posts on various message boards that touch on the no sound over hdmi on nvidia cards issue (mine is an 8400 gs) and the general consensus seems to be create a custom edid and tell x to use it. So here is the heart of the post: I downloaded http://analogbit.com/sites/default/file /edid_disable_exts_v1.2.tgz to modify my edid but I don't know what to do with it. I extracted it and tried $ make and $ sudo make install But that wasn't the ticket,

I'm trying to get sound working in ubuntu 10.10 via the HDMI connection in my nvidia GTX 460.Currently when I first boot up I get no sound at all but I can manually sort this by:
1) Using alsamixer to unmute "S/PDIF 1" on the nvidia card
2) Play a sound through the card with
Code:
aplay -Dplughw:1,7 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
From here on the sound works but there is some form of tinny distortion.
Therefore I have two issues
1) How to make the card work automatically on boot up
2) Solve the sound distortion I'm getting
For issue 1 I believe that this is because the nvidia card is not the default sound device. The way I have seen to fix this is to put an option on the module loaded in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as below...
Code:
options snd-C index=0
options snd-A index=1
However as you can see from the configuration information attached they both use the same driver so I don't think this will work. I know very little about sound on Linux but I have read many posts and can't find any solutions to my issues.

I am trying to connect my desktop computer to my TV and I need some assistance with using audio over HDMI. I have an NVidia 580 GTX graphics card and I am on Ubuntu 10.04. I compiled and upgraded to newest alsa, so my HDMI audio shows up as one of the sound cards. I also read that I should manually unmute everything that shows up in alsamixer that is related with the NVidia card, and I did that as well. Unfortunately I still don't have any audio.. Here's the output of aplay:
Code:
$ aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

HDA Intel, ALC1200 Analog

front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0

I intend to update my video card to allow the operation of all three of my monitors in a triple monitor configuration. I have a 790i motherboard with Nvidia chips, so I will most likely choose an Nvidia card for the upgrade. As I will need connections for three monitors, I will have to have two cards. It is my intention to have one large screen field spread across all three monitors. I assume the best way of doing this will be to use an SLI Bridge to link the two video cards. Thus the two video cards must be identical.
Question 01: Is this the best way of realizing a triple monitor setup?
While I am upgrading, I desire to also give the system the ability to play Blue-Ray High Def Movie one of the 1920x1200 monitors I will be using.
Question 02: What are the pitfalls of playing BD-Discs on Debian. I know I will be eventually acquiring a BD-Disc player (once the prices come down a bit more), but when shelling out for two video cards, I better think as far ahead as possible and get the two video cards that will do everything I can foresee them needing to do.
Question 03: As all of my monitors have HDMI input ports, I assume that I will need Video cards that have HDMI output ports to play full 1080P movies. Is this a valid assumption?
Question 04: Can anyone recommend a video card that does what I am wanting it to do? (This is to say Two Dual Link DVI connectors and an HDMI connector per video card with standard and high definition video playback capabilities). Keep in mind that I will most likely need to purchase two of them, to the Super Expensive Bleeding Edge cards are probably not going to be a practical option here.
Question 05: Is there a way that I can just play the BD-Discs with full resolution in a window on one of the three monitors I will have connected to the computer without having to go the HDMI route?

I've seen this problem on dozens of different forums but I haven't found anybody with my specific problem or a solution that has worked. I have an nVidia GeForce 8400GS which I just installed in my Debian box and I can't get the HDMI audio to work. Kernel version is 2.6.32-5-amd64, nvidia driver version is 260.19.36, alsa version is 1.0.21. Output of lsmod shows that nvidia module is loaded. Output of aplay -l code...
I feel like I've looked everywhere on the internet for a solution to this and I just can't find one. It seems that everybody is able to see their nVidia audio device using aplay -l and then the solution goes from there.

Connecting my Laptop's Displayport to the HDMI of my TV works fine under Windows Vista in 1080p (1920x1050).
Under Linux the Brightness alternates between high and low every other second.
Otherwise, the picture is fine and sharp. However, the ever alternating brightness makes it unusable.
Anyone any idea what is the reason for this is and how to fix it?
Software: openSuse11.2 (64bit), nvidia 190.53, X.org 11.0. Hardware: Dell m4400, nvidia Quadro FX770M, Sony KDL-37W5810.

I have a zotac IONITX motherboard with HDMI video. The video seems fine, but I haven't been able to get the sound working through the HDMI cable. Even the little speaker at the top is gone. It was working fine when I had speakers hooked to the motherboard. I have installed the latest 256 driver from nvidia. If I run 'aplay -l' I get this:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
lspci -v gives :
00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1) Subsystem: PC Partner Limited Device 437b
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at fae78000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
I don't know if this is important, but I noticed that it says its running an intel driver for my nvidia sound. Could this be the problem and if so, How do I fix it? Also, if I click on system->preferences->sound it comes up with a dialog box that says that its waiting for the sound system to come up. Why I am not getting any HDMI sound or even the little speaker icon at the top?

I'm just not able to connect the dots regarding NVidia, audio and HDMI.I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and updated the ALSA driver to version 1.0.23 using the script posted in another thread on this forum. Although I got a config issue in the process my NVidia HDA device shows up with
xbmc@MediaPortal:/etc/modprobe.d$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]

why do I see four NVidia HDMI devices (3,7,8 & 9) in aplay -l, I couldn't find an explanation for this? Next I got smplayer giving audio over HDMI when selecting either of the HDMI devices in the audio config menu, but after a reboot, even if one of them is still selected I need to change and apply before I hear sound. Is Pulse Audio or alsa or some other thing interfering? I just do net get sound working although XBMC lists HDMI for sound output and for passthrough. More precisely I have the options (High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI), default, custom) for Output Device and (HDA NVidia hdmi and hdmi) for Passthrough of which I tried all combinations.

The old Nvidia GT220 recently died in my HTPC and I replaced it with a new GT430. Sound over HDMI worked beautifully with the old card (after much trial & error,) but has now stopped working with the new card.Forgot to mention that everything appears to be unmuted in alsamixer. When I run "aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/ sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" I get no sound. I do however get sound from the headphone jack when I do the same command for the onboard sound card (0,0)

Most of the time the sound works on the OS default sounds but wont work for movies, streaming and music. I am running pulseaudio. I am new to setting this audio up. The headphones work fine.

I just purchased a new notebook, namely an HP Pavilion dv6, with a GeForce GT 230M. Also, I have a neat 1920x1200 display with an HDMI connector, which fits nicely with the corresponding outlet on the computer. Now I'd like the external display to be the main display when connected, with the internal display as an expansion to the desktop, and the internal display should, obviously, be primary when on its own.
The reality looks quite different: Not too surprising, with the default drivers I got only a 800x600 resolution, but with the correct drivers installed, I got the full resolution on the integrated display. My external HDMI-display, however, is dead. With the xorg.conf file being obsolete I can't really use the configuration app by nvidia, can I?

I wanna get into the world of stereoscopic 3D and I was wondering are there any easy and straightforward solutions. Do I need specific hardware to view the results of my work? I heard that there are screens with which you don't need goggles but that there are problems with that too..
I might start doing something like 3 dimensional charts for example that I could actually see in 3D. I would definitely stay away from modeling characters like in 3D shooters.
