Jun 20, 2011I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
Ubuntu :: How To Mount USB Drive To Multiple Locations
Feb 10, 2010I have two storage drives that I will be sharing by FTP. One is internal 1TB ext4 HDD and another one is an external USB 1TB NTFS HDD. Both drives get mounted to /media and I am trying to set an additional mount point for each. For internal HDD everything works perfectly. I simply went to /etc/fstab and copied the line related to it. Now I have:

/dev/sdb5 /home/eugene/.MOUNT/sdb5 ext4 defaults 0 0
/dev/sdb5 /media/sdb5 ext4 defaults 0 0
which does exactly what I need.
I tried doing the same for the USB drive which produces unexpected results. The lines are

/dev/sdc1 /home/eugene/.MOUNT/sdc1 ntfs defaults 0 0
/dev/sdc1 /media/sdc1 ntfs defaults 0 0
This has the following results:
- in /media/Y (Y is label of this HDD) I have this HDD and can access all its contents which is good
- in /home/eugene/.MOUNT/sdc1 I don't have anything and this is bad
- in /media/sdc1 I have only one folder from this HDD and this folder is empty (on the HDD this folder is not empty) and this is somehow weird.

Apr 7, 2010i want to have 2 partitions. one is called system. the other is private.
in the private partition i've got some folders i want to mount into system as system folders.
folders in private:
- www
- home
mount points in system:
- /var/www
- /home
is this possible? cause it seems that you can only specify a whole partition to use for a mount point and not a folder in a partition or am i wrong?
i run ubuntu server.

I suppose I did something wrong when creating the archives. I mean, what is the point of the archives having empty folders that represent the mount points and drives of the archived data?

Jul 17, 2011I am truly sorry if this has already been answered, but I don't think the question was asked in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY, maybe?
I installed Slackware 13.37 on my Dell desktop pc (I don't think that the model information is relevant in this case...), and I was able to insert CD's and DVD's which would then be mounted AUTOMATICALLY so that I could then browse the contents etc. I can STILL do this, whether or not I am logged-in as "root" or as a "normal" user...
Now here is my problem : I JUST installed Slackware 13.37 on my Toshiba notebook (a Satellite 210, in this case) TODAY. Now, I can insert the same CD's / DVD's into the drive and have them automount as the "root" user, but when I log in as a simple user, I get errors telling me that they can NOT BE MOUNTED! The messages on quite long and complex, but I can paste an copy into a secondary post if that will help. For my part, what the error message says is a lot of gibberish!
I have examined the user information on both my desktop AND laptop computers to see if there were any major differences, and there are NONE EXCEPT FOR ONE : My "user" account on my desktop is user # 1000, while on my notebook it is 100. The DEFAULT offered in both cases was 1000 when I created the accounts, but I did not see
why the next user in the list should be over 999 higher than the last one listed, so on the notebook I did not accept the default offered, and instead choose to use # 100. Was that wrong? Why does Slackware start the first created user at such a large user number?
I did NOT do anything to allow the automount of optical disks as a user on my desktop pc (at least, not to my knowledge...) that I have not done on the notebook!
General :: Can't Mount Usb Disk - It Just Create /dev/sg Device But No /dev/sd
Dec 23, 2010I have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux.When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk.
If I look at

So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result.
A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata).
Added:I did try to mount /dev/sg3 but mount say that its not a block device. (File say Its a character special device).

I found an other guy with exactly the same problem [URL] so I think its beginning to look like a bug in the drives firmware or in the linux kernel.
Final update:Corsair have said that the disk design is broken and there does not seem to be any way to make it work.

Dec 27, 2010I have a large qcow2 formatted disk image, which I use as storage. Often I need to move data to and from this disk image. I mount the disk using the qemu-nbd tool as follows:
modprobe nbd max_part=63
qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd0 /host/disk100G.img
mount /dev/nbd0p1 /home/rup/disk
But disk access fails every now and then in the midst of some I/O operation with an "Input/output error". At that point I have to manually unmount the disk and re-mount it so that I can run the program again:qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd0umount joborkhaki/What could be the reason for this? Is there a better tool that I can use to maintain a qcow2 disk image?

Aug 2, 2010I am having a rather strange issue. I have windows 98 installed into a disk image that I use bochs to boot it with. I want to transfer some files to the image but now I am unable to mount it. I will attach the drive to the loopback device but when I go to mount I get wrong fs type bad option ... etc.

cfdisk shows it ok as does fdisk. shows as a fat16 file system. When I attempt to check it for errors using fsck.msdos I get

The OS knows it is there, as I can see it in the dmesg output, but the actual "node" in /dev doesn't actually exist. I'm baffled. Will you help me figure this out? Here's what I came up with so far. May 11, 2011I have one hard disk (call her HDA) that contains nothing but a single ext4 partition containing a backup of all my important data. Last night I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my primary hard disk (call her HDB) and from there proceeded to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade. In 10.10, I was able to read HDA just fine. However after the upgrade, I can no longer mount this drive. When mounting from file browser:

my hard disk has a block count greater than the size of my device. I've done my background searching on this and tried a command line utility I've never heard of before:

Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.
Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...
Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.
How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?

Apr 22, 2011I just sat up an openSSH Server with Samba access and all, but don't think about that.here's my question, and as you read you may understand why I posted this instead of googling it, it's un-google-able.can I mount a regular folder like /media/disk1/random to 2 different places ? and if so here's the tricky part:
1: when I end up in that folder, I don't want the direction path to end up like this: /media/disk1/random IE: so I don't want a link to the other folder, I want the OS to think it's a regular folder (in lames terms)the reason is because I want my openSSH clients to move inside a small space, without jumping all over the place, and be able to use the (...) feature in the SFTP client.(don't think about the permissions their already set.)
2: I don't want it to be a synchronized folder, I want the data to be stored on /media/disk1/randomor else it kind of blows the whole file storage server idea straight out of the window.

I would then like to permanently mount each folder to its machine (I have 10 machines connected through a switch, so each machine will have a folder that is mounted to ONE of the 10 folders in the external hard drive).
My questions:
(1) Is this a good configuration? are there better ideas to give individual machines more space without replacing their hard drive?
(2) How do I limit each one of the folders ('folder1', 'folder2', ...., 'folder10') to a size of 100 [GB]? I don't want one folder (say, 'folder1') to grow in size and 'steal' the space designated to the other folders.
