Well I have two desktop environments GNOME and KDE. However the command
Code:
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-logout" --description="KDE Login"
produces proper ouput in GNOME but not in kde.
whenever I try to run it in kde it produces the following output
Code:
$ /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-logout" --description="KDE Login"
Failed to play sound: Sound disabled
how to enable sounds in fedora 12 and i have installed real player 11 gold rpm and adobe flash player but both these are not working and several other players which came by default with the fedora too are not working i would be glad if any one find me a solution to all these
I installed Fedora 12 and everything seems to work fine except that I can't get sound from ....., pandora, or anything other than the weird system noises to work. I have ALSA and PulseAudio installed. Is there some simple procedure to enable sound in Fedora 12?
I just installed fedora 13, everything is great but there's something im missing, i use gnome, everytime i wanted to hear a mp3 file i had to put the mouse over the file, but on fedora 13 this feature is not working anymore, is there a way to enable it?
I am an almost noob to linux and have encountered what might be a minor problem I need to activate the sound in a server install and I have no X or any clue what I need to do.
I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 in my Acer Aspire 6930 Laptop. Everything is fine - laptop speakers are working but the external speakers are not working. So what I should do to activate the sound card so that my external speakers work ??
I'm using Debian Lenny, the only problem that I have is that the sound card isn't recognize by the system, I have installed ALSA 1.0.20 and I followed several tutorials trying to enable my sound card (ATI tech Azalia (Intel HDA)but all tries fail.
So, after install another distro in the same pc I figured out that the sound card is enable and running by default, the ALSA version is the same -1.0.20- but the kernel is different -2.6.31.xx- so my questions are:
1. do you recommend me to upgrade my lenny's kernel to fix the problem?
2. is there a way to upgrade specific packages -for example samba, alsa, kernel- using unstable or testing versions instead of upgrade the entire distro? actually I'm confortable with lenny
3. what configuration should I check in the "other" distro to use that parameters in lenny?
I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

trying to enable sound in Ubuntu Server! I have 10.04 Server x64 on an atom (Dell A100) that I need to enable sound for a legacy device that is running in a Windows VM through a com port (all working fine bar sound)I have followed these instructions for sound issues guide, with no joy![URL]I actually have 2 identical machines, with Ubuntu Desktop on the 2nd the sound works fine, but I'd rather not install gnome etc to fix the sound! On the server:
Code:
user@server:~$ aplay -l aplay: device_list:223 no soundcards found...
On the 2nd machine:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog]
[code]....
I presume the 'Kernel modules:snd-hda-intel' means the Intel driver is actually installed but I tried rebuilding the alsa driver from source anyway (selected hda-intel)it compiled successfully. But the server still says no soundcards found with the command: aplay -l I also tried adding snd-hda-intel to the bottom of /etc/modules but still no joy!
Kinda like sleep timers, this technology has been around longer than dirt as a basic option on TVs, radios and other electronics, and yet why is it so hard to find these options in the modern OS? So far on Google I've seen this question asked repeatedly as far as 4 years ago. Haven't come across an answer...How to enable mono sound instead of stereo?
I recently got a new ATI HD 4890 graphics card that supports sound over HDMI. It works in my other OS (Windows 7) but I cannot get it to work in Xubuntu. I read somewhere that by default the open source drivers have HDMI sound disabled. How do I turn it on? I even tried the Comprehensive Sound Problems Solutions Guide and still have no sound.
I'm running a VM (headless), and sound only works when I am logged into a gnome session. Sound (from any application, including VLC running in a terminal) is stopped when I switch user. How do I prevent this from happening?
I've been using my girlfriend's Mackbook Pro and really like the beep sound when pressing backspace at a command prompt and really would like to have it on my ubuntu. However, I've checked "Terminal bell" option in the profile settings, but there is still no beep sound. What am I missing here?
I have a Acer Aspire Revo R3600 running Ubuntu 10.10. Its a clean install, all I have done is update the NVidia drivers and ASLA. The PC connects to my AV Receiver via HDMI and I have stereo sound but no surround sound. If I go to System > Preferences > Sound and look under the hardware tab I only have "Internal Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output" and no mention of surround sound or 5.1 etc. I assume this is part of the problem.
I'm running to 11.04 and I can't seem to get the file to play sound. I've tried others and none seem to work. I've tried downloading all sorts of codecs but either not the right ones or just not doing something right...
I have a system with an on-board S/PDIF output (the one I want to use) and a ATI graphics card that has an HDMI output and therefore an own audio device./proc/asound/cards shows me the following:
Code: 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB HDA ATI SB at 0xfe7f8000 irq 16
is there any way i can make my sound card go 5.1 and enable a "fill speakers" option? I have an onboard via hd 1705 sound codec as it's listed in my mainboard manual. The sound card it's self appears in the system as aa nvidia hda, and so it's listed in the manual. So my question is, shouldn't it be a via since it has a via hd chip? Anyway, apparently my kmix volume control has very vew options for it. I also have a via tremor pci sound card, but it's not hd. That one has all the options available in the kmix, but the via hd doesn't. I'd prefer using the via hd since it's "high definition". Is there any way i can enable the 5.1 on it?
sound card is working well inside SuSE and everything is ok there. But when I install Windows 7 or XP inside Xen Virtualization software, I can't use sound card and Windows is unable to find any sound hardware.
trying to get everything set up in Debian lenny on my new Toshiba staellite L500. I have successfully installed the wireless drivers and graphics card and have them both up and running. But I'm having trouble with the sound card. Specifically, it appears to be installed but I cant get any sound or any devices related to sound (speakers, volume control, alsamixer) to work at all.
This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.
I'm trying to use an application (e.g., mplayer) to play sound that comes in my sound card (via the mic jack). (What I'm really trying to do is sync a sports broadcast by putting a delay on AM audio, as described here. I'm stuck at the part where it says "this shouldn't be too difficult".) I've seen some hints that there might be code-heavy solutions using LADSPA or some JACK SDK, but there's just gotta be a simpler way. I'm hoping for something like
Code:
mplayer -delay -7 - < /dev/mic
but I'm darned if I can find it. I'm sure there are plenty of other sports fans who would find this useful for syncing radio with the digital TV feed...
My usb sound card has been identified by alsamixer, however it won't make any sound when i put headphones in it. The volume is up, I know the sound card works.
