I recently installed new hard drive and cloned old hard drive software onto it. The bootloader installs either linux or other operating system. Ever since the cloning, boot hangs. Words in the thread title are the last to appear before everything grinds to a halt. Just before the kernal panic message appears, "Initrd finished" is last line. Will have to try booting again to find more info before this.

While I was exploring my newly installed Mandriva Linux 2010 in my system, I found some emoticons somewhere in a window ( I exactly don't remember where ). I want to know where to use those emoticons or what are the uses of those emoticons. Please give me an example. If possible also please tell me where I could find that emoticons i.e. in desktop settings or somewhere else. I forgot the location.
I would like to dual boot mepis 8.5 and mandriva 2010.1. How do I set up my partitions and how do I install the distros so I can go from one to the other. I have a 40GB hard drive, which has been wiped clean.
I have a Nortek Diva keyboard and my machine runs Mandriva. In Mandriva 2009, pressing the "magnifying glass" button on my keyboard took me straight to the Firefox Search bar. Fantastic! Now that I've upgraded to Mandriva 2010, however, pressing the same button just launches the search engine as a new tab (okay, I can live with that), but the cursor is not active in the Search field.
I've been to the Nortek site but there are no drivers for the keyboard, Linux or otherwise. And no Nortek keyboard configurations appear in the Mandriva Linux Control Centre. I know how to use xev to capture keystrokes. What I'd like to know is, how can I map the keyboard button to position a cursor in the Firefox Search bar? I use Search A LOT, so this is really slowing me down. I bet it's something like "firefox %search".

I was searching for a long time for a Linux Live USB that I can boot my MacBook Pro from. Is there such a distro I can install on Snow Leopard or Windows 7? Update: I've found this:
"isohybrid" CD images (..) are special in that as well as the normal CD-based ISO9660 filesystem they also contain a valid-looking DOS-style partition table. Thus, if you simply copy one of these images raw to a USB stick a normal PC BIOS will boot the image directly. (...)Finally: I'd like to add support into xorriso for creating the nasty HFS hybrid images that are needed for booting Macs. The code that does this in cdrkit is probably some of the worst that I've ever worked with, and,I'd like to get away from it. If only Apple hadn't stupidly built their proprietary platform around this and had used open standards instead
I am trying to build a Python module (pyfits) but I get the following error:
# python setup.py install /home/steve/src/pyfits-2.2.2/stsci_distutils_hack.py:239: DeprecationWarning: os.popen3 is deprecated. Use the subprocess module.
I am trying to change the login screen from "Configure Your Desktop>Advanced>Login Manager".When I go into the login manager, everything is grayed out,you cannot change anything.I have to change it as root but I don't know how to do that. Therefore I need help regarding that. I did google searching but it was not of any help because they were for previous releases of mandriva or other distros which didn't apply to my case.
