General :: Debian Opens In Text Not GUI?

Feb 19, 2011

I have installed Debian from the disk in the Linux bible and the mirrors in the US and Oregon State. The first time was successful but lasted only only a couple of days before it was corrupted. Subsequent installations have all ended with an installation that opens with a text screen login. What should I enter to convert to GUI?

Software :: Gnome-terminal Opens Blank With No Text At All?

Jul 10, 2011

I'm on Debian Squeeze, and my terminal emulator is gnome-terminal. For some reason, my terminal has started to open completely blank, without showing

Code:
user@computername:~$
All it shows is a flashing cursor, and I have to press ctrl+c to get that command prompt prefix to show up. I'd like to know how to fix this. xsession-errors shows nothing useful regarding the gnome-terminal.

Debian :: When Insert The DVD Mplayer Opens Up

Feb 20, 2010

I am having difficulty getting my DeVeDe created iso that I burned to a DVD to play on my Debian box. I have w32codec and libdvdcss2 installed on my Debian Lenny system. I have the Debian-Multimedia repository added to my sources.list file. I've been Googling for an answer since 8:30 a.m. EST and everything says I should be able to install the above codecs and play DVD video.

When I insert the DVD, Mplayer opens up, acts like it starts playing with a (streaming) tag and then clocks to 1 second and goes to "Paused"

I've even tried installing VLC to see if that mattered and it did not.

Server :: Url Opens Same Site On Debian Lenny?

Feb 6, 2010

I installed for the sheer pleasure of it a webserver. includes apache2, postfix mail server, MySQL, MyDNS nameserver, PureFTPd, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, etc etc. (I have tried to use the config panels ispconfig and webmin)

The situation: There are 3 sites listed on the server, All 3 on different virtual hosts (obviously). The http access goes trough the 20080 port since my ISP blocks everything below 1024 (the bastards). I use a linksys router (192.168.1.1) with dmz pointing to 192.168.1.100 (server) The sites on the server:

inphone.be
fraksken.be
fraksken.is-a-geek.org (but appearently not geek enough)
I also gave them own IP's:
192.168.1.95
192.168.1.96
192.168.1.100

Debian :: KDE4 Clicking On A Link Never Opens A Web Browser?

Sep 13, 2010

I could use some input. I have just recently installed Squeeze and KDE4 as I had hoped that the kinks had been worked out. Anyway, here is the situation: If I click on a link in kmail or kopete (haven't tried other apps yet) the default web browser never opens. Okay, can deal with that but instead what happens is my screen is filled with notifications literally by the hundreds, that konqueror is being started. No window ever opens but the task-bar is then filled with tabs for konqueror. I could not get this to stop and had to kill X (as my settings are to save the state of running apps when logging off. Thus if I just log off over 100 instances of konqueror will be saved and restarted when I log back in). Some things that may be relevant: The box has a 2.3GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. According to mem there is only 12MB of free physical RAM when the system has been booted and logged into. Other things still work, other applications still start and close although be it slowly. Once X restarts and I log back in, if I manually run konqueror it starts but with an error message that a previous session has crashed and would I like to restore that session. I tell it no as I don't want the whole thing starting over. I can drag and drop links in to konqueror and things work as expected. Starting konqueror from a terminal works fine as does using the run box and any link directly to the program. I am not sure how to simulate me clicking on a link to have the program run from a terminal so I can look for error messages. I have tried to search the web for info but I have recieved absolutely ZERO useful hits in nearly 10 pages. If this is not due to my system running out of resources I am thinking it is a bug I need to report. However, at the moment, I have described to you all things the best I could and I doubt with out something more it won't do much good to report it as my other Squeeze installs on an 800MHz system with only 512MB of RAM don't have this problem even though they run slower than molasses in January left outside in Alaska.

In the mean time I have made it so the system messages don't keep filling my screen by disabling the pop-up notifications. This hasn't changed the fact that hundreds of instances of konqueror are trying to be opened though when I forget to first open konqueror and then drag a link into it. At the moment, this is a completely stock install using only the first DVD that is only a week old. Here is the DVD info: "Official Snapshot i386 DVD Binary-1 20100823-05:10"

Debian Multimedia :: Icedove Opens Homepage Instead Of Links

Jan 6, 2016

This began after I deleted my gnome configuration files. I logged out, logged back in, and Firefox and Icedove autostarted like they are supposed to. Firefox asked me if I wanted it to be the default browser, (which it was before), and I indicated yes. Now, whenever I click links in Icedove, a new Firefox window (rather than a new tab) opens and loads my homepage instead of the correct website. I've tried changing my default browser and then changing it back with xfce settings; Icedove opens links in Firefox regardless of the default browser setting. I've tried various changes to the setting

/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http (and https) with gconf-editor:
/opt/firefox/firefox-bin %s (this was the setting when I first opened gconf-editor)
/opt/firefox/firefox-bin "%s"
/opt/firefox/firefox-bin "%u"
/opt/firefox/firefox-bin "%U"

None had any effect.I know that the urls in my e-mails are not the problem because the correct site loads when I copy and paste them.

General :: Debian TEXT Only Running Hot?

Feb 8, 2010

I recently found a laptop that had a broken / failing graphics card so i installed debian and did not opt to install the desktop environment. This system runs on my network and i connect to it through putty.

My main issue is its running hot, i touch the bottom of the laptop and its hot. This computer isn't doing anything, its running in text mode (and the lid is closed so the screen is not on) why is it so hot.

Are there any configuration changes i can make to reduce the heat? I tried to look myself online but could not find much. Is there a way i could config it so it would go into like sleep mode after x min and wake on a lan request?

General :: Debian - Gnome - Metacity - Fglrx - Text Too Small

Sep 7, 2010

I am running Debian Lenny with Gnome and Metacity, and I've just installed the fglrx driver for my ATI card. I am running at a humble 1024x768 resolution, but I can barely read the text in many applications and on the desktop itself. Some programs are better than others, but for example, Icedove/Tbird's text is extremely small.

I encountered this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...aviour-569624/ but wasn't sure if it was up to date or not.

I'm sure this topic has been covered plenty of times, but I'm new to setting up X/Window Manager/Desktop on Debian, and am not sure how to proceed. I've been using Linux for a couple of years but am relatively new to Debian (I started on Ubuntu - hence the being stumped by something like this).

General :: Errors In Console-text That Appears While The Debian OS Is Loading - Play Music - No Sound

Jul 11, 2011

I've been using Linux for about a week, now, and yesterday I finally got my audio to work. Before shutting-down yesterday, I installed some more audio-plugins. When I started-up my computer today, there were errors in the console-text that appears while the Debian Linux OS is loading. When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out. So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier. When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. I had several problems with the entire sound architecture of the computer. I made some more changes in the application-download-manager-thingy and restarted and I no longer got the errors at boot-time.

Unfortunately, I still have absolutely no sound, and it appears as if ALSA is effectively dead. My soundcards are Rocketfish (PCI) and Realtek HD Audio (Integrated). I got Realtek to work yesterday with OSS.

Another problem is that WINE doesn't work, with the exception of WINE's default programs. I've been trying to get this thing to work for at least four days now, and I've made absolutely no progress...

Also, after fighting with it for a few days, I finally managed to get the internet to work, but Linux still thinks that I'm offline. It's really weird. This one's not so much of a problem as it is annoying. In addition, if I click-on the network-manager-thingy, it says that none of my connections have ever been used. Odd.

General :: Loop Append Text To Text Files?

Jan 15, 2010

may be an advanced question but I need to know how to do this. Here at work I am in charge of recruiting and we have about 1,000 resumes in already. All of the resumes are in a .pdf format. I need to rename every .pdf in the following format:{firstnameLastname}.pdfThe only way I know how to do this is to convert all the .pdf files to text, extract the name out of the first few lines of text, import into excel, and then use VBA to rename the files in mass:Here is my logic so far:~Deskop/a = houses all the .pdfresumesOpen terminal: Code: cd ~/Desktop/afor f in *.pdf; do pdftotext -raw $f; done That will convert all of the preceding resumes into text filesNow I would like to append the name of the text file into the last line of the text file. So, for example, for Resume1.txt, I want to append "Resume1.txt" to the last line within Resume1.txt. So after I run the command I open Resume1.txt and on the last line within I want to see "Resume1.txt" on the last line, at the end of the resume. How can I do this? I would like to use a loop and have the terminal append the filename to the body of the text file until all of the have been appended.

General :: All Text In Text Editor Turned To Boxes?

Jul 17, 2009

I was trying to install GTK+-2.8.20, so I installed it's necessary dependencies in this order:

pkg-config-0.23
glib-2.20.4
pango-1.24.4
jpeg library
tiff library
cairo

And I was about to install the last dependency: ATK (Accessability Toolkit).I opened the Archive Manager to extract the "atk-1.26.0.tar.gz" file (yes, I'm still switching from Windows so I'm fond of GUI), but I noticed all the text in that window was boxes, like the □ type box for every letter of text.So instead I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, because the terminal and regular windows weren't screwed up.I opened a text file in gedit (reference to commands in terminal, such as how to extract files via terminal), but yet again all of the text was □-like boxes.

EDIT1: I should note that I was trying to do this in PERL, not sure if other alternatives are more simple?EDIT2: I should note that for text file 3 (reference), it's a long list of MANY cnp_id values and their corresponoding chr, start, and end values. So, the code will have to take the cnp_id from text file 1 and/or 2 and search through textfile 3 (reference) to match on the cnp_id and then take the corresponding chr, start, and end values and add to the relevant line in the output.EDIT3: Sorry, I should mention that the text file entries are all tab-delimited.I have 3 text files:File 1:Columns represent sample IDs (sample_id) and rows represent CNP IDs (cnp_id). Cells represents the confidence level (confidence) for each sample and CNP.Quote:
