General :: Check System For Weak Passwords?
Mar 2, 2011
I know one way is to enforce rules on the passwords, use at least one uppercase, lowercase, number, special character, and ensure that the password length is at least 8 characters, etc...
Is there an additional way to prevent weak passwords? I heard of "John the ripper". Has anyone successful applied that?

How to I get linux to stop prompting me for a password and remember it? For instance, when using the root user, I always get prompted, but I would rather only be prompted once per user session.

Upon shut down I have noticed that my system says "Unmounting Weak file system". I have taken steps to check that all software is installed correctly and up to date but I am quite new to Linux and I am still learning.
Does warning at shutdown mean that there is a problem with my file system?
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I wonder if it is possible to have two passwords for one user account in 9.10. I have a long login password (5 words about 45 characters with spaces caps). I would like to set a shorter password for Authentication, sudo, etc. While retaining the original for logging in.In short:Have long password to login to computer.Have short password for everything after login.

I have a machine that experienced some troubles with some of the real time stuff that I'm running. One lead that I have is that NTP daemon may have moved the time, causing false timeouts.
How do I find out if NTP daemon did indeed move time at all? Any logs? I do see NTP daemon restart in /var/log/messages, but I don't know if time adjustment should be there as well. to clarify: I need to understand it from the logs, after the event. May be 2 days after the time was adjusted. Running commands to see the current status doesn't help.

I have NFS fileserver that has served me well for more than year. But recently I noticed that it has started to reboot on its own very frequently, almost once a day! It is most likely not a power related issue as I tried changing UPS/power sources, but no help!So my question is:Is there any log file where I can check which is causing the reboot? There may not be a single logfile, but I need some point to start the investigation!

I've yummed Wine into existence on my Thinkpad R51 (1 gig ram, 32mg ATI MR7500 running Fed12/gnome 2.28) and it's very weak, choppy, slow, buggy. Is this just the nature of the beast or is my machine weak on ram and/or video?

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and now the colors are off. I tried different themes which made some of the tabs more readable, but I don't see how to fix it. Things like background colors in Firefox are too light to see. The same for the grid lines in OpenOffice.org Spreadsheets. Form fields are not outlined. If you don't know where they are you have to hunt by dragging the pointer over the area.
Images look OK.
Does this sound like something others have seen?

my partitioning layout was as follows
Vista Recovery
Windows 7
GRUB
Extended
-->Fedora 12 (ext4)
so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

Today I finally installed Fedora 11 on my new laptop. To my surprise wireless was working already, this was something very new. however, i realized that the ath9k had a very bad connectivity. I cant even connect to my router from my bedroom which is less then 10 metres away. Is there some remedy for this unstable module? I have tried madwifi but it doesn't seem to work with my card which is a Atheros AR9285. Hopefully someone can shed some light on how he/she overcame this problem.

I understand that wireless is one of the most common problems with Linux, although I did not have this experience with past distributions or versions. After two years away from Ubuntu I installed 10.04 and everything is working fine except the wireless connection. Actually, it does work and connect, but goes up and down, loses connection and in most cases does not reconnect, unless I am 1 meter from the router. The room next door is already too far, a place where I normally have my laptop connecting perfectly with XP.
I am using a Toshiba M70,some additional information below:

I am among those unfortunate wretches with an Atheros wireless card (ar5001) and I've had problems with it from the day I installed Ubuntu. I've been using Madwifi to connect to the internet, and it's worked fine, until I lately changed my internet connection, got a new modem etc.
Madwifi works still, but the signal is really weak - while not so on Windows Vista.
I know it's NOT ipv6 related. Do I have to change the connection settings? Is my card outdated or whatever? Am I using inefficient drivers? Should I just not use Madwifi and rather something else instead?
(Trying to install ndiswrapper and get it to work was a dreadful process, so I won't attempt that again.)

I use Ubuntu on my netbook, which I uses for browsing and email. It's way faster than the Windows which came on the machine. That's a nice feature, as is the price.
I like it except for the constant, perpetual, ever-present, super-annoying need to be entering passwords and "becoming root user" and so on. I am the only one using this appliance. I don't even care if someone steals it, really. There must be some way (I hope) of disabling this idea that I am a CIA agent with TopSecret materials.
I just want a simple, easy to use appliance. If not Ubuntu, is there any distro that is aimed at normal people?
