General :: Cannot Detect Or Mount Cd-rom On Ubuntu (server) 6.06.1 I386?

So I am trying to install ubuntu server on to a sony vaio laptop (long story in and of itself) I have a few questions the first and most important being this: 1. What is the module and /dev/ I am supposed to use to get it to recognize the drive? It kind of dumb because it can't read the drive that it's installing from ya'know? The drive is a sony nec optiarc AD-7560S the vaio is a VGN-NS110E all stock equip except the hardrive.
2. Keeping in mind that I may..probably will move the hdd to a netbook what are ALL the module I will need to finish the install and how do I add them in (can I use a usb or do I have to re-burn the iso)
3. What do I need to do to get the built in remote desktop to run once the install is done and most of the software is taken care of. Also I need to be able to install stuff from the remote computer and said remote computer may be holding the program. I am also looking into rdc-ing from my andriod (tmobile g1)

I just purchased a Western Digital My Book World Edition External hard drive and need to mount and format. My router sees the connection but I am now unsure how to proceed. Will linux detect the new device through my wireless connection? I know very little about Unix based or Linux commands.

Trying to install a newly downloaded DVD image of 11.04 this morning on my T410 LT (4 core/4GB). The image MD5'd okay, burnt it, stuck it in the drive, rebooted, asked me about install lang = english, select install ubuntu, get subject error and it falls into initramfs prompt. So, I put my 10.04 install CD in and guess what, it works!
I will repeat what I have already posted in the another forum, and I understand install is a difficult part of the system, but there is always some glitch or another just trying to start install with ubuntu. Once it runs, if it run, I normally see few other problems after that.

For RHEL 5.4,
# uname -r
2.6.18-164.11.1.el5
# uname -m
[code].....
show some "duplicate" rpms, one for the i386 and one for the x86_64 platform?
For example,
aspell-0.60.3-7.1.i386
aspell-0.60.3-7.1.x86_64
There are numerous other "dups" like that. Is this normal?

I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?

I'm trying to install ubuntu-10.04-server-amd64 from a 2gb usb stick. I used Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.7 to put the contents of the iso onto the usb disc, the installer boots fine but it always fails at "Detect and mount CD-ROM". Any suggestions? I thought about trying to mount the usb stick (/dev/sdb) to the where the installer is looking for the CD-ROM but I don't really know where that is.

I'd like to report an issue I've had with Ubuntu server ISO. I downloaded ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso by HTTP on ubuntu's website and burned it on a CD. It doesn't work well. I got an error in udevadm sys/devices/pci0000 etc. it was a problem with the hardware, but it seems that it's the ISO that is corrupted. I checked the MD5 checksum and it's not good. Then I download the same ISO a second time (by HTTP) and same problem.
So it seems to me that the ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso that we can download by HTTP is not the same as the torrent one. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, if I'm right I hope this information will be useful for administrators.

I am an experienced Ubuntu Linux user, but the fact is that I need some help. I recently set up a "venerable"(Pentium 4, single-core, 2.4 GHz, 32-bit architecture) machine with Ubuntu Linux version 10.04 server-i386. My objective is to set up a "kiosk" directory on it which everyone(including guests) on my SOHO network can read from and write to.
I have designated the directory "kiosk"(no surprise there) and defined it in smb.conf. It is directly under the "home" directory, as path = /home/kiosk and set the file permissions as drwxrwxrwx or, if you prefer, like chmod 777. I have a separate machine, System Librarian running Ubuntu Linux 10.04 Desktop amd64 on the network(via Wi-Fi) and a second separate machine running Windows XP Pro, with SP3, also on the network this time via Fast EtherNet(100 Mbs).
From the Linux machine, I can read a complete file list, but I cannot "open" an RTF or an ODT doc in the kiosk directory. When I try to do so, OpenOffice.org simply "opens" a blank, untitled document. JPEG and PNG files in the kiosk directory open just fine. I cannot write to the kiosk directory from this machine, either.
From the Windows XP machine, by contrast, I can list files, open RTF and ODT docs(using Microsoft WordPad) and write file to it without any apparent problems. The file format on the server(Iguanodon) is ext4. Obviously, I have made some sort of mistake in setting this share up,

I have been given a "gift" of a Netfinity 5100 that currently has that other M$ operating system on it. I want to configure it as closely as possible to my web server located in Chicago that uses CentOS 5.5. and use it as a "test server".
This is daunting for me as I've only been involved with Linux for less than 6 months. I have Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop PC.
The person who gave it to me indicated that I should plug it in and let the 2 arrays charge for 24 hours. I'm doing that. I also have had an electrician install a clean new 20 amp circuit for it. And I have downloaded and created a CentOS 5.5 i386 Live CD.
OK ... we've now exhausted my realm of knowledge. Can anyone give me a broad scope of what needs to be done? I will try to plug in the specifics of each step as I progress.
A assume I plug in a keyboard and screen to it. Do I use an ethernet connection between the server and my router to provide broadband ... what steps are necessary to configure that? Do I need to download and install Apache and MySQL .. if so, where?

So I'm playing around w/ some Cisco equipment and needed a quick tftp server. Go to command line and type yum install tftp-server. I get No Package available! I can clearly see it here on the i386 repo. Any ideas?? In the meantime, I'm just going to upgrade this lil 600m laptop to CentOS 6 to quickly solve the problem but I thought it was curious.

Anyone know what version of spam assassin is newer 3.3.1-3 or 3.3.1-52 I would assume 52 is newer but I don't know if once it reaches 99 it going to 2 Example 3.3.1-99 ---- 3.3.1-2 -----3.3.1-21 and so on. I could be completely off but can anyone just clarify if 3.3.1-3 is newer or older than 3.3.1.52
(On a side note does anyone know the difference between spamassassin-3.3.1-3.el5.rfx.i386.rpm and spamassassin-3.3.1-3.el5.rf.i386.rpm?? What does the X mean?) I looked at the release date of .52 and it seems to be in march 2010 whereas .1-3 seems to be in november. oes that seem correct? Does anyone have a direct download to spamassassin-3.3.1-3el5.rf.i386.rpm???

This is a standard install, just like I've done dozens of times before.
Plain vanilla, just installed.
When I boot, I get to the splash screen and it doesn't go into the default selection.
Could this be a Hardware thingy? The reason I ask is because I've had this issue happening with 5.2 on the same machine. I just formatted it completely and installed a fresh 5.3 i386 on it and I get the same behavior.

I have followed the guidelines in the Ubuntu NFSv4HowTo [url]
My export directory is /export/home
I know the network is working fine, because I can telnet into the Grasshopper, and browse to its web page.

I got gigabyte chipset with an raid support. Currently I have 2 hdd's running in raid 1. When I was first installing ubuntu 11.04 server my fakeraid was detected, and I assigned a name for it in the initial installer and it was auto-mounted (working 100%) ever since.
However I was forced to reinstall my ubuntu server, and this part was somehow skipped in the installer.
HDD can still be seen in /dev/mapper
I can see
control
jmicron_GRAID -> ../dm-0
jmicron_GRAID1 -> ../dm-1

We can mount one NFS server just fine, but if we try mounting a share from another NFS server on the same domain we are unable to. We are using Fedora 10. Has anyone run into a problem trying to mount an exported share folder from an NFS server. Some of us get access denied and we've chmod 777 on the exported folder. The export file contains:
/labdocs 192.168.1.0/24(rw, sync, no_root_squash)
And that's it. We run exportfs -a -v and it shows up fine. On one of the client systems we try to mount the folder on a directory created by root
mkdir /docs
mount 192.168.1.13:/labdocs /docs
it either hangs or displays a message access denied.

I've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.
OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot. However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too. Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.

I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

When I double click on the icon, I get an error message that indicates that the drive can not be mounted. I tried to mount in gnome terminal using: mount /dev/sdb and get "can't find .dev/sdb in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab". I tried adding device that I would like to mount to fstab, but don't think I have the settings correct. I looking for any info that might step me through the process.
