I have an acer aspire one which will not connect to the Internet i have a full wifi connection but when you click the browser button it looks like it trying to connect but nothing. i,m not very computer friendly so i have no idea what to do
View 14 RepliesI recently switched from Windows 7 Starter to Ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook, however, I cannot connect to the internet through my recently purchased D-Link Dir-615 it did work using Windows. In my Connections things appear right under IPv4 the method is Automatic DHCP, security is WPA & WPA2 Personal but keeps asking for password and won't connect. The SSID is the name of my network, the mode is Infrastructure, the MTU is Automatic, Under IPv6 Method is Ignored. Everything seems right but nothing connects.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy landlord upstairs just got a new modem and WiFi by Clear.com and when trying to get the WiFi to work...it just wouldn't connect with my laptop. They have 2 computers upstairs, one laptop and one desktop that recognized the WiFi and don't have any trouble using it. Wondering if there is something I have accidently clicked or changed to make it not connect. It does not have an error message, it just does not connect completely.

View 15 Replies View RelatedI haven't had a problem with this yet, but today I was online via my wifi connection and then the network center said there was no connection. My modem said I had full bars, and I tried restarting both the modem and the laptop, but nothing. The internet works if I plug in the ethernet cable, but will not pick up the wifi signal. I called my service provider and for 2 hours they couldn't figure out how to connect it because it has Linux. They tried to set up a new password protected network because they said the modem was working fine, so they had me delete the old network from the computer... but when I tried to set up a new network it still was not picking up a wireless signal. Ive tried flicking the switch on the front of the laptop and it still will not pick up a signal. Please help me out with this... I have no clue how to use Linux!

I'm trying out Samba for the first time, the main directory is called "workplease", and I have 2 users, "keith" and "aspire". I set the permission on "workplease" to aspire by doing "chown aspire:aspire workplease". Then on my windows7 machine I can connect to the samba server using aspire login, see my "aspire" folder and the "workplease" folder, I can create txt files, folders ...ect
But I would like the user account "keith" to be able to read/write to the same "workplease" folder. I added both users to the group "networkg" by doing
"usermod -a -G networkg aspire"
"usermod -a -G networkg keith"
So my question is how can I make the folder "workplease" have permissions to let any group members of "networkg" read/write/execute anything they put in that folder, or sub folders? Im getting rid of my Windows Home Server , and trying to use samba to do the file sharing for my buddy and I.
edit: Seems doing "chmod 774 -R workplease" changes the permissions on all the files/subfolders, to give owner and group full access only, but is there a way anytime someone creates a txt file, or copies over an mp3 for example, it auto-maticly has 774 permission?
I usually used freebsd. Now I decided to try linux and selected CentOS 5.5. I installed it on my notebook Acer Aspire 5930G (I tried both i386 and x86_64 versions) and I have problems with cable networking. I selected static network configuration during install. Internet access is working via NAT on freebsd server.
I can ping anything in my LAN, I can ping any host in internet, nslookup works fine, but nothing else isn't working. I can't wget even in my LAN, can't connect to FTP server in my LAN etc. The same with internet hosts. Iptables turned off, iptables -l shows that all chains are in ACCEPT. SElinux turned off. NAT for accessing internet works fine - when I reboot to windows 7 with same network config internet is working. I guess this could be problem with driver for my NIC - Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet. But I can't change it on notebook :)
I bought a HP2133 mini note pc which runs on linux. I have never used it before so i'm unsure about it, but i've done the basic set up on it but it's won't connect to the internet!

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter being fed up of all the problems I have had with Windows, I have just installed Mandrake Linux and everything seems OK apart from the fact that I can't connect to the internet. I presume it's because I have not got the relevant driver (or have not configured it if it's there) My machine was previously running Windows and all the disks I have are for Windows.
I have looked in my manual and it says I have a K8NBP GRAND (I think that's the motherboard, you'll see that I don't really know a lot!!) The manual also says Gigabit Ethernet LAN : NVIDIA Gigabit MAC + VITESSE Gigabit PHY - Supports 10/100/1000Base- T Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet. When I was running Windows I just had a network cable running out of the back of the PC connected to one of the LAN sockets on my router. I am currently having to use my wife's laptop (which runs on yet another OS but at least it connects to the internet or I'd be really stuffed).
I suddenly cannot connect to the internet from work and at home with my laptop. Both ethernet and wireless won't work. I still get an IP address, and can also ping it, but cannot ping other addresses. What befuddles me that it happened today at work and at home, that it worked fine at both places before, and that I just connected to the internet yesterday at an airport. I have not installed any new programs, nor have we changed our internet provider etc. My girlfriend's laptop (Windows -- gnnn) still can connect to the internet without problems.
View 8 Replies View Relateda friend of mine recently wiped my computer (windows XP) and installed Linux. The internet provider is Comcast cable. I have not ever had a problem connecting w/ windows XP but now I can't connect to the internet.I've spent hours on the phone w/ IT at Comcast and they tell me that I have connection to their modem and I also have a valid IP number. They seem to think that it could be something as simple as a setting, somewhere in the program and advised me to contact Linux for a solution. I am anxious to use Linux as my friends rave about the performance and all the 'bells & whistles' so the speak.
I have since, reinstalled windows XP (because I need to use the internet a lot, but can't get connected to the internet with it either.Again Comcast shows that I have connection to their modem and I have a valid IP address, but still can not connect to the internet. They seem to think that since all other variables remain constant except for the installing of Linux that the problem lies somewhere in that install.
I have just finished installing Fedora 10 on my machine and I have it connected to the internet via ethernet cable. The problem is it wont connect at all for some reason.
I click on the green Activate button in network configuration to see if it does anything but I keep getting this AVC denial error. I don't even understand what the problem is:

So I play around in the settings and put this SELINUX thing to permissive but the thing still pops up, so it didn't help:

The only other thing I messed around with is the DNS server; I put two DNS servers in those boxes, and I got those from the people in charge so it shouldn't be wrong.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen using Fedora in VMWare, sometimes I can connect to the internet and sometimes I cannot. I do nothing differently on different days. I restart the machine and / or shut the machine down at the end of the day. When the machine starts back up the next time, I might have an internet connection or I might not have an internet connection. The 2 computer symbol that appears in the top will also sometimes be displayed. If I have that icon and click on it, it will display connections I can use including a sys one. I have a bridged connection chosen in VMWare also. Furthermore, when I click on the System -> Administration -> Network Device Control, 'eth0' is listed and it is listed as 'active'.
Yesterday I could ping out to a specific ip address on our network ( 192.168.1.xxx ). Now, I cannot ping that same ip address. I receive an error 'Destination host unreachable'.
How can I make it so that I have the internet connection every time I start up the machine? What do I need to check as far as the internet connection goes and the network connection?
I have an Internet connection problem. The computer I'm using which is running Red Hat Enterprize Linux Server cannot connect to Internet. I can ping machines working in our local network. Static IP addresses, DNS, Default Gateway, Subnet mask, they all seem to be correct. I restart network interfaces but that doesnt make any difference. Other machines in our local network are connecting to Internet without any problem.

I've been told a couple of solutions that I couldn't access due to safe mode just going into a BSOD.
So I found Knoppix and it's great. but it won't connect me to the Internet. I use a router and it detects the connection i use. I click on it and type in my WEP key which I know is correct and it tries connecting. After a few seconds the screen pops in again asking me for my WEP key again.
Anyone know how I can connect to the Internet?
I am unable to connect to the internet. I have Motorola Netopia DSL (NO router) and can't connect to the internet in ANY linux distro (openSUSE, fedora, slax, mandriva, simplymepis, mint, dreamlinux, ubuntu, ubuntu studio, artist linux). The only linux distro that works right away is backtrack linux 3. All other distro do not work including new back track linux 4 because in version 4 they switched to debian. My ISP is Bellsouth and they do not want to cooperate. I was told they do not support linux.
DSL shows internet and activity lights green but it does not connect.It seems to me problem is in eth0 because when I go to terminal and ifup eth0 it gives me can't assign requested address. I have dynamic DHCP and can't assign static address.I have 2 questions:

I run all linux distros from live CD/DVD from external DVD drive except fedora which is on C: drive.I did try to run already network devices, dsl configuration without any results If I can go to my modem thru browser address 192.168.1.254 I would be able to solve the problem but I always get message can't connect to server.
I just installed Debian 6.0.1a on an old laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000) and I can't get it to connect to my wireless internet.I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate partition on the same machine, and it has no problem connecting to the internet.

I have downloaded 9 files from: source code, exe x2, makefile, txt,and 2 shell script files. The exe files give me the msg "could not display file name etc" There is no app installed for exe files What dont I know and where can I find it. Would it be easier to take the machine to an internet cafe and plug in a cable to get it online, atm my other machine is a eee pc windows 7 starter and it has some weird stuff going on, says it has over 10 viruses? Anyway cant wait to get this over to Linux too.
