General :: External Hard Disks
Mar 22, 2010I'm using SUSE11.1, and connected to my system, a DELL 7500, a 1.5 TB Buffalo external HD. I partitioned it in 4 sectors.After connection, nmediatly the mounted disk would appear on the screen,(each partition with its respective name), and could use it as any other folder.To unmount the external Hard disk, I just ejected each partition, and had no problem. I used the same HD with my Mc, and things were all right, I used to backup automatically the Mc. However after having been using the system in this way for more than half a year, suddenly the hard disk began to rattle...and the SUSE system on the DELL, nor the Mc can mount the external hard disk any more. Thus, the partitions can not be mounted any more. When I cd to /media/ in the SUSE, the names of the partitions appear, but they seem to be empty..On the Mc, going to /Volumes/, before the problem appeared, the names of the partitions were there... but now, they are no more and the automatic back up either.So my question is, how to mount the disk, if it needs mounting... or how I can recover the partitions and the data therein... I am clueless, after two weeks trying to solve the problem..

Jun 15, 2010A few years ago I built a small Slackware system and, for storage, I used using a 2Gb Compact Flash card plugged into the primary IDE interface. Initially, I made a bootable CD rom, booted the new system from that, copied the file system to the CF card and then ran LILO to install a boot sector on the CF 'disk' /dev/hda. That all worked well enough.
The only trouble is that the CF card, being an early one, is rather slow and so I've just bought an Innodisk 2Gb Disk-on-Module which ought to be much faster. I have plugged that into the secondary IDE interface, I've run cfdisk to make a partition, formatted it using mkreiserfs and copied all of the contents of the CF card on /dev/hda to the new device on /dev/hdc. So far, so good. But...Now I need to run LILO from the existing CF card in /dev/hda to put a boot sector on the new /dev/hdc. Then I want to move the new device from /dev/hdc and put it in /dev/hda once it's bootable.
I'm stuck to know how to configure LILO to install a new boot sector on /dev/hdc. I don't appear to be able to make LILO understand what I'm trying to do. If I change the line 'boot = /dev/hda' in lilo.conf to 'boot = /dev/hdc', LILO aborts with an error message.
General :: Boot Two Hard Disks - XP And Kubuntu
Sep 10, 2010I have installed xp at the main hdd. It has 3 partitions. Then I installed Kubuntu 10.04 on the slave hdd. When I boot, it doesn't recognize kubuntu. When I searched at My PC in XP, didn't recognized the slave hdd. I switched the hdd (slave to master and viceversa) and it didn't go well either.

Jan 17, 2010Here is my current setup. I have installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, and BackTrack 4 Final in that order. All operating systems are able to boot and all is working well. The only problem I'm faced with is really just an annoyance. Which is BackTrack is showing up with a "Ubuntu 8.10" entry name.
Now I did some research on this. I found out that BackTrack was based on the Ubuntu 8.10 OS so it makes sense why it would show up that way. I found several articles and topics explaining how to modify the GRUB programming files. I guess to change the entry name, but all of them don't seem fool proof to me nor the best way to go about doing things.
One thing I wasn't able to find info on is where GRUB2 actually gets these entry names from. My theory is if I can find out where GRUB gets this info from, I can simply log into the BackTrack partition and change where the "Ubuntu 8.10" entry is to "BackTrack 4" and then run the update-grub2 command within Ubuntu to update the entry names.
Ubuntu :: Editing An Entry In Grub2?
Feb 19, 2011I have installed Sabayon 5.4 on my laptop besides Ubuntu 10.10. During installation of Sabayon I did not opt for a bootloader as I did not want to disturb the already existing Grub2 on MBR from my Ubuntu installation.After successful installation of Sabayon, I booted into Ubuntu and updated the Grub which detected Sabayon correctly. Then I rebooted and tried to boot into Sabayon but I could not do so. The booting process stopped with the following error -

So evidently, Grub has wrongly taken the values of root as /dev/md0 and swap as /dev/sda2.I again went back to Grub2 screen edited the Sabayon entry by replacing /dev/md0- with /dev/sda4 and swap:/dev/sda2 with swap:/dev/sda8 and pressed Ctrl+x. Now I was able to boot into Sabayon. how do I make these changes permanent. Which files should I edit so that Grub correctly read root as /dev/sda4 and swap as /dev/sda8?
General :: Hard Drive - Does Check Disks During Boot Instead Of Shutdown?
Dec 3, 2010I'm just curious - why do all linux distros (all I've seen) run their periodic disk checks during boot? I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.

May 2, 2011I have a PC with 4 harddisks and one ssd drive, presently PC boots from the 1st harddisk and other harddisks (sometimes 1, 2 or 3, depends upon the requirement) are used for the storage. Now i want to boot the PC from SSD and use the other harddisks for the storage only. My problem is that when system boots it takes 1st harddisk as sda and SSD as sdb, if i am using only one harddisk, and if i use 2 harddisk it takes sdc as SSD. So i am not able to give fix boot point in menu.lst file, if i wish to use root filesystem from SSD.I am using 2.6.33.7 kernel and grub bootloader. I have tried using initrd with udev but not able to include and start udev properly in initrd. I am trying to boot from UUID or LABEL, but no success. Am i missing something in kernel to get the UUID or LABEL.

Ubuntu Installation :: XP Overwrites Win 7 Grub2 Boot Entry
Jun 22, 2011GRUB2 replaced the boot entry for Windows 7 when I installed Windows XP. I tried to create my own menu entry for Windows XP but it seamed to me that it was superseded by the Windows 7 boot loader. I have a brand new desktop PC - Core i7 processor, 2 TB hard drive, 6 GB RAM.
I don't know how to bring back a menu entry that was over written / Superseded by another OS being detected by update-grub; in this case Windows 7. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 at the end of many other Linux OS's. So it is a Multi-boot setup. Basically Windows XP has replaced the Windows 7 boot entry in the GRUB 2 Boot menu after running update-grub.
Then to get Windows 7 back I booted off the Windows 7 Install DVD and used the boot repair option. This then changed the working Windows XP Boot Loader to boot Windows 7 which I wanted but there was a catch. Windows XP didn't boot any more because it was replaced / Superseded. The Linux OS's boot fine.
Fedora Installation :: Grub2 Bootloader - Manually Adding Entry?
May 29, 2010I have a working Ubuntu install with the Grub2 bootloader. I need to manually add an entry to boot Fedora 13 off of sda. Sda1 is the boot partition, sda2 is LVM. None of the examples I've tried work. I do also have F13 grub installed on sda, but chainloading to it didn't do anything other than a blinking cursor.

Mar 4, 2010I recently upgraded grub -> grub2 on my karmic box. Grub2 worked when chainloaded from legacy grub, and also the first time I tried it standalone. Both times the grub2 menu came up.
I ran vbeinfo at a grub2 command prompt, and found my monitor's native res listed - 1280x1024. I added that to my /etc/defaults/grub and then ran update-grub, and rebooted. This time no menu appeared and the default entry booted straight away. I suspected that the resolution was not supported for some reason or that the way I entered it in the config file was wrong, so I commented it out again in /etc/default/grub, and ran update-grub again - to no avail.
I have since tried lots of different formats for the GRUB_GFXMODE, such as 1280x1024@24, 1280x1024x24, and the normal 640x480, but none of them give me a grub menu. I have even tried using GRUB_TERMINAL=console, to no avail. I have checked the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file each time to make sure my changes were put there correctly by update-grub. I have also made sure that timeout was set to 10, and the hidden timeout was set to 0. My GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet".
I have reinstalled grub2, grub-pc, and grub-common, and I have dpkg-reconfigured them all too. I have no idea what to do to get my grub menu showing up again.

/dev/sda4 with Ubuntu 10.4 /dev/sda5 with Centos 5.5
I use Ubuntu obviously. Centos is there because I need to run some test on that distro. The problem is Centos uses Grub and Ubuntu uses Grub2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Menu Not Showing New Entry For FreeBSD
Jan 11, 2011I've just installed FreeBSD 8.1 on /dev/sda4 (FreeBSD slice), without installing the boot loader from FreeBSD (I've selected None when prompted for boot loader in sysinstall). Now I want to use my existing Grub2 from already installed Ubuntu 10.10 to boot FreeBSD also.
After some reading, I've added to the end of /etc/grub.d/40_custom:
After running sudo update-grub, grup.cfg file shows my new entry. The problem is that after restart, I don't see the new entry in the grub menu.
Another question, If i used chainloader +1, that means I need to have the FreeBSD bootloader installed also on /dev/sda4 right? For chainloading booloaders?
I didn't get to that step, I first want to see the entry in the menu.
Any idea what I might be missing/misdoing? (I also checked for blank spaces in the menuentry like the wiki for grub2 says)

May 6, 2011Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 I noticed that my Grub menu had not upgraded. The upgrade was not as straight forward as it should have been as the PC hung at the end of the installation resulting in a reboot and running dpkg in safe mode to get it all back up and running.
To fix the incorrect grub menu.lst file which was not updating, I renamed the original file and then ran sudo update-grub. It generated a new and correct file. However, my Windows partition was not listed as a Grub menu option.

I can see the entries for different partitions of the hard disk in fdisk -l but there is no node file created in /dev folder. So, I am not able to mount.

This works in so far as I can boot 13.0 from the master drive, then mount the slave drive and read and write files to it. So the hardware is basically working.What I want to do is configure lilo so I can choose to boot either 13.0 or 13.1. So far I have not gotten this to work.
Under 13.0 the slave disk appears as /dev/hdb. The root-partion for 13.1 on the slave is the first primary partion on the slave, and appears as /dev/hdb1 when viewed under 13.0. What stanza should I add to lilo.conf to make the slave 13.1 bootable?

fdisk reports it as /dev/sda1 - W95 fat 32 LBA. What would the fstab entry be to make the disk mount automatically on boot, so that it shows on the desktop ready for use.

May 27, 2011I thought that alignment of 4096-byte sector Advanced Format hard drives was automatically taken care of via Gparted or Disk Utility until I bought a Hitachi HTS547575A9E384 (Travelstar 5K750) and saw that Disk Utility showed my partitions to be out of alignment. I then realized that my WD, which I had bought a few months ago, probably had its jumper set to emulate a 512-byte sector legacy drive (512e) and is probably not set to the AF setting.
Straight to the problem.
I've searched many sites, some of which suggest using fdisk (others the proprietary software of the hard drive's manufacturer). It is essential that one change the arguments prior to changing the partition table as there is no way back (yet, as far as I know) without having to move data to another drive and starting all over:

SUSE :: No Hard Disks Were Found For Installation
Aug 5, 2009the hard disc has two partitions, one is 156gb ntfs, currently with windows xp prof sp2, and I am trying to install linux to the second partition, also currently ntfs.I am not a total newbie (i used fedora 10 last semester and ubuntu the semester before that). I have tried installing ubuntu9.04, fedora 10, fedora 11, and opensuse11.1 to this computer, and every time the installation probes for hard disks it comes up with zip, unless I have my external disks connected. Otherwise "No hard disks were found for the installation. Please check your hardware!"with OK button.
I also tried with gparted to see if I could find the hard disk, and still had no luck. I googled my problem and found others with similar problem but no satisfactory solution.does anybody have any idea what could be wrong and how to fix it??
