I'm searching for a tutorial on how to convert my videos (AVI, WMV and MKV formats) to a format that offers both good quality and small size.The audio part should be 128 kbit/s mp3 lame.I'm using Fedora 14 with an rpmfusion repo. It would be especially nice to be able to batch-convert the AVIs.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use ffmpeg to split a number of videos of different types (WMV, MPG, AVI). I do not want to change anything else, just split them into smaller chunks. The video is split, but the quality of the output file is terrible. I would describe it as "blocky" (I think the correct term is "pixelated"). When I make the player (KMPlayer) much smaller the problem naturally goes away.
The command I am using:
ffmpeg -i original_vid.wmv -ss 00:00:00 -t 00:05:00 first_vid.wmv

Seems to mean something, but I couldn't find anything saying that this is the problem or what O should do to correct it.
I have a lot of old video footage around that, I am ashamed to say, I encoded with heavily proprietary codecs like DivX and such during the dark ages (aka. the Windows Times).
Now, I would like to redeem myself from the mistakes of my past by re-encoding everything into open formats.
Since those videos are often not of the best quality (poor camera, poor codecs, poor knowledge), I do not want to loose more quality in the process.
So, to avoid any more mistakes in the future, I would be glad if someone could answer me some of the following questions:
1. Is it even possible to re-encode those movies into something like x264/vp8/theora without loosing any more quality?
2. What tools should I use for that? Command line is actually preferred.
3. What would be the most desirable format to have? I'm thinking about x264 in Martroska with ogg Auto. Is there anything better suited?
i got the weirdest flash player problem on the planet. so, here's what the problem is. whenever i play low quality 360p flash videos in fullscreen in firefox, i get horrible performance and it eats up all the cpu resources, as compared to 1080p fullscreen video, which is smoooooooth and doesn't take up as many resources as low quality videos. why is that? i am using flash 10.2 beta 64 bit and have 64 bit ubuntu, but the problem persisted even on the stock flash player.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.
This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

I'm wanting to create a one-time snapshot archive of all my data in case something catastrophic ever happens to my main hard drive and my backup drive. I should add that I update my main backup regularly, which means that I wouldn't notice any creeping data corruption problems until it's too late...which is another reason a one-time snapshot is so important.Since I'm archiving a snapshot of all of my data at once, only a hard drive is big enough to handle the job. (I'll copy a small fraction - the truly 100% irreplaceable stuff - to DVD-R's too, but that doesn't mean I particularly want to lose any of the other stuff either.) Unfortunately, this means my storage medium doesn't inherently have any CRC's, error correction/redundancy bits, etc. built into it like data DVD's might.
So: What archive format would you suggest using for maximum reliability and resistance to corruption?My main concern is making sure that I can still open the archive and extract surviving files even if some of the bits (or the entirety of other files) go corrupt. This is my last-ditch fallback archive, so if I ever need to use it, I really, really don't want to get a message saying the archive is corrupt and cannot be opened at all! Because of that, it's important that the individual files and folders are compressed separately from each other...if at all. I don't care about the compression ratio, and I'd even be happy if the archive was 150% the size of my data thanks to a gigantic recovery record. I also care about CRC's and such, since I'll want to know which files/folders/etc. are corrupt vs. which ones are still intact.
Is there any way to convert *.flv and *.mp4 videos to *.swf format please? I have some videos downloaded with .....-dl that are in the above format. I would like to make them all into SWF files, so anyone can watch them in their browser, without having to find a suitable multimedia player.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have to use mplayer, using the gmplayer executable, in order to see some HD videos in MTS file format from my digital camera, and though they play reasonably in mplayer it is impossible to control the video as the control window is blank and black, as is the video window until the video starts to play. See screenshot. I have an ATI 9200SE video card, sempron 2400+ cpu, 2GB ram, if that makes any difference. I have never had this problem in previous Ubuntu versions, only now in Lucid, fully updated. I have the packages mplayer, mplayer-gui and mplayer-skins installed. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing.
EDIT: OK, problem over. To get the best from my ATI card I was using 16 bit colour. Discussions last night on another forum questioned many things which made me look again at that, and a change of colour depth has solved that difficulty. I now need to make sure that the24 bit colour does not introduce other problems which are more difficult to live with, but my xorg.conf is customised and edited from the one I needed to get any display from karmic, so it is possible that I may be able to live with 24 bit colour now in Lucid.
I could understand the idea of security "if I haven't touched the file in 9 days, and the timestamp was changed, I know someone was in my system". But, is there any other purpose for preserving timestamps?

So I have a bunch of directories:
dir1
dir2
dir3
etc.
which themselves all contain subdirectories:
dir1subdir1subdir2etc.and at the lowest level they contain all of these jpegs that I need. The problem is that I only need some of them. They're named like this:
pic1.jpg
pic1_med.jpg
pic1_small.jpg
pic2.jpg
pic2_med.jpg
etc.
I want to just grab the ones without the size suffix and copy them all to another set of folders, while preserving the directory structure. The numbering all starts at 1 for each low level subdirectory, so I think that the directory structure is the only way to not get them mixed up.
I know that cp has a recursive option -r but how do I just extract the ones without the underscore? And then how do I preserve the directory structure when I move them over?

So when I play the flv the audio is added and the video quality is not changed.I tried:ffmpeg -i 20.flv -i 20.wav -vcodec copy -acodec libmp3lame new_file.flvbut I an error "Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?)".
