While reviewing the rm command in the man pages, it specifies that the argument -f will ignore nonexistent files. My question is, what is a nonexistent file, and more specifically, how does it differ from a "file"?
View 2 RepliesU1 is trying to sync a file which doesn't exist on any of the devices attached to the account nor in the cloud folder. I've tried using U1sdtool to stop it, including the following commands:
I've also tried actually creating a file of the same name that it keeps trying to sync in the hopes that it will latch onto that one instead, but no go. I tried deleting that file, but no go. It constantly loops through the same nonexistent file, over and over and over and over and over...
It also only does this on one device. It does not do that on the other devices.
And, yes, I've done u1sdtool --waiting, and there is the nonexistent file, on the list, with all of the real files that actually do need to be synced backed up behind it.
Any time I start k3b, it complains about 'The file or folder /media/disk/.... does not exist' (which indeed does not exist). Where is this path stored? How can I remove it? grep -r /media/disk ~/.kde/* does not give any hit.

This drive is neither plugged into my computer nor is it involved with my backup script:rsync $base_options -narv /home/noleks /media/Personal1/Linux_bak. I think the question is, does rsync have a queue somewhere of operations it did not complete? If so is there a way to rest this? It is possible something went awry with a previous sync on this drive but I cannot remember right now. Either way why is it trying to complete that sync when I'm asking it to do something else?
I did some modification of fstab, and works, but for some strange reason, there are drives shown in the Places menu that shouldn't be there when the drives (they are usb drives) are unplugged. I had to put them in fstab, because they are mp3 players and I need user privelages in order to sync them. With nothing plugged in the usb ports,I checked, and they aren't shown in mtab, and only Sansa-e260 and JOSHS PHONE are shown in fstab, although as far as I know, they shouldn't appear in Places when unmounted. Is there a way to reset it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn the Compiz Fusion Desktop Wall plugin settings, I can normally find a "Non Sliding Windows" option (Or at least, I've been able to in recent installs of Ubuntu). However, in the default installation of Compiz that comes with OpenSUSE 11.2, I don't have that option. I double checked to make sure I wasn't losing my mind, and on my Ubuntu 10.4 laptop it IS present (In CCSM under the Desktop Wall Plugin's "Viewport Switching" tab). I even went so far as to check to see if it's in the gconf database, and it's not on Suse, but is on Ubuntu. Installing the compiz extras package did not help. I even tried putting the key into the gconf database on Suse, but of course it didn't work.
The only thing I noticed is that Suse appears to be using an older version of Compiz (Suse: compiz 0.7.8; Ubuntu: compiz 0.8.4). Being a fairly experienced linux user (however being new to Suse itself), I'd like to check if there is a simpler solution than compiling from scratch. Anyone ever run across this/solved this already? The final goal is to make my desktop wallpaper and gnome panels static when viewport sliding.
When I originally installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, I had the following operating systems already installed:
Kubuntu 9.04
Windows 7
Windows XP
Ubuntu automagically created a GRUB2 menu that offered all of these, plus of course itself, which was fine for a while.
Later on, I deleted and reformatted the partitions that had been dedicated to Kubuntu 9.04. GRUB2 has failed to keep up. Despite running "sudo update-grub" multiple times, the GRUB2 menu continues to show entries for Kubuntu 9.04.
How do I get rid of these obsolete entries? The partitions it was on simply do not exist any longer, so I don't know how GRUB2 is picking it up.
I had already edited my fstab file to reflect the new partitioning scheme, so I don't know where GRUB2 is getting the idea that I still have Kubuntu 9.04 installed.
I am trying to use a git repo over http on my Debian 5.0 machine.
The git repository is located in /var/www/ on the Debian machine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X

I have just been bothered by a fairly small issue for some time now. I am trying to search (using find -name) for some .jpg files recursively. This is a Redhat environment with bash.
I get this job done though I need to copy ALL of them and put them in a separate folder BUT I also need to keep the order intact after copying.
For e.g - If I get a JPG file under /home/usr/new/1/ then the destination also needs to be /test/old/new/1/.
At the moment, I am simply putting all files under /test/old/ and I can't somehow get the later /new/1/ folder path created under /test/old/
I understand this could well be done using while OR if else loop, though if someone can just guide me with a hint, I would be really grateful.
I will complete the rest of the steps and was asking here since I am still not comfortable with the shell/bash scripts yet and planning to be really good at it over the next couple of months.
I need to get the modified date on a file in linux to use in a script.I tried using 'ls -l' on the file, but this caused problems when the date turned from a single digit into a double. The reason for the problem was because I was parsing the result string on spaces.How can I get the date of the last time a file was modified so I can use it in a script? I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

error message when I ran my program that I couldn't open my local file. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a way to insert the number of lines in a file to the start of the aformentioned file. This should be simple but as I am not used to scripts in Linux, I am finding it tough going. I can find the number of lines in a file easily enough via
filesize=$(awk 'END {print NR}' $1)
but as for inserting this into the first line, i'm failing to do so. I've tried some of the other approaches on these forums but none so far have been able to do so.
I've tried:
sed '1i$filesize' $1
but sed i requires a string, not a variable so no go I've also tried:
mv "$1" "${1}.bak" 2>/dev/null || touch "${1}.bak"
cat $filesize "${1}.bak" >"$1"
but again with no luck as cat seems to need an input stream Just to recap, i want to insert a line at the start of a given file that holds the number of lines the original file has.

i am having a problem concern zlib installation.i tried configure file successfully but make file displayed some errors.that usr/linux/limits.h not found.so i found that i have to install glibc-headers-devel...but there is no such a kind of package in ubuntu repository?/????/some people saying that libc6-devel is equal to them!
