General :: Using Grep With Accent Character Present

I am filtering some output from gcc with grep. But if the output contains the accent character (`) I run into a problem.Then I have to press ctrl/c to get back to a prompt.
(1) Can someone tell me what is going on? I suspect that it is trying to match up the accent with another accent. But my output is from gcc and there is no control over the fact that it uses an accent and a single quote around a name.
(2) Can someone tell me how to do the grep so it does not give the ">" prompt but instead locates "xcvr" in my example?

I want to match some filename in some text, but the filenames I have no control of, so "[" can "]" can appear in the filenames.so do I always have to use sed to addslashes to these variables before I have to grep them? and what other characters have I missed other than "[", "]", "."?

I have the following command that greps "/etc/cron.allow" and displays the following 9 lines of $file grep -A 9 "/etc/cron.allow" $file On the other hand I would like to grep a file for a certain text display the next couple of lines and stop when i hit a specified word or blank or pattern.Basically I would like my grep to end when the shell hits a blank, certain key word or pattern specified in command.

I was wondering if someone can help me... I have a file that I am trying to LFTP from my Linux server to my Mainframe and the file is uploading but the data looks slightly corrupted..First off let me tell you the following text is French and it contains accent characters.Below is how the data looks when you view the data through vi or on the Mainframe:

Note how the accent e is turned into a uppercase accent A and a copyright symbol.When I view the PC file in hex through Notepad ++ the turns into and the result is one character turning into two characters is a hex C3 and is a hex A9.
When I LFTP the file to the mainframe the characters are transferred and I end up with a hex 66 and a hex E4.The end result I am after is that I want to transfer my linux file, who's data looks like this on the linux server: factureNumro and like this when viewed on a PC: factureNumro to my mainframe and I want it to look the same as when I transfer it to the PC. Like this: factureNum.

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

I shut down my Ubuntu 10.04 (recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 to 10.04) and moved it to another location with a different monitor, keyboard, mouse. When I booted, a screen came up stating:

I have to computers: 'A' (linux) and 'B' (windos). On 'A' I have a linux system that i copy over to a movable disk on which i install the lilo bootloader. Now when I move the disk to 'B' I am able to boot into the new linux system, however I would like to have an item in the lilo boot menu from which I can boot the windows system on 'B' also. And now the tricky part: I would like to create this item when the disk is still on 'A' where windows is not present.
I have tried using "disk = /dev/hda1 inaccessible" without any luck.Is it possible to "cheat" lilo into adding an item pointing to a disk that is not present on your system ?

I am trying to write modular program but when I try to compile I come to know I don't have any files in /usr/src/linux. I have installed fedora 12 which has 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE. I am including in my code:
linux/kernel.h
linux/module.h
Those are not present directory in /usr/src/linux is not present. My goal is to compile modular programs.

I accidentially overwrote the first 1M of my harddisk on linux (using dd). So, the partition-table is gone. I can still access all partition (except the first one) using /dev/sda2 (and so on), so the data is still there. I only need the partition boundaries to restore the table. How can I do this? The Linux-Kernel must still know them because all mount-points still work. fdisk -l /dev/sda doesn't work because it acctualy reads the partition table.

For those of you who have no idea, the original plan for Ubuntu 11.04 was to have only one beta release, but that has changed and there is now a Beta 1 and Beta 2. The Beta 1 has been scheduled for the time the original Beta was scheduled for, and Beta 2 has been scheduled for 20110414. For those of you who have seen my profile, that falls on the day I turn 18! (Just wanted to add my 2� here). However, I plan to be humble about it. Guys (and girls), what would you do if a Linux distro version (alpha, beta, or final) was released on your birthday?

In programming and various terminal programs (Screen, Vim) the [, ], { and } tends to be used a lot. I'm using a Norwegian keyboard where these are placed such that I have to stretch my fingers a bit too long for whats comfortable. To make it easier I though I'd try to make alt+[some key] be one of these characters. Is there a way that I can bind, say alt+� (Norwegian letter) to '{' system wide?Btw, is such thing called binding, mapping or something else? I'm getting a bit confused by the terms...

I need to find file from ls - l by using grep and certain regexp.
In particular I need greep to see certain file ending, like let's say .txt but only using regex.
So it should be something like
ls -l | grep '^.+.txt$'
But that doesn't seem to work for me.

I am attempting to set a character set of IBM850 on slackware linux for a particular application (epic5). I am using rxvt-unicode and have setup LANG/LC_*=en_US. Now if I set the encoding to IBM850 in kde's konsole program im able to display certain characters correctly. I'd rather not use IBM850 for everything; is there a way to set/alias a command for a per application execution?
I've tried things like:
LC_CTYPE=IBM850 epic5
LC_ALL=IBM850 epic5

I'm looking for a way to force my PS1 variable to a certain number of chars.
It currently looks like:
$PS1="W $"
and I'm trying to keep the same number of characters regardless of the length of current folder name.
For example, both Documents and bin would be displayed as 10 character strings, keeping the left side of my terminal the same width all of the time.
