General :: Multiple Servers Or One Server With Multiple VMWare?
Feb 7, 2011I'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:
* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit
I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?
To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.
General :: Command Running Multiple Jobs On Servers
Jul 26, 2010How to submit multiple jobs onto a Linux server. The only way I know to submit and run a job on a server is using qsub, and verifying the status of the job using qstat. I usually run my scripts using qsub -cwd so that I can run it on my own directory (instead of having the results sent to a scratch folder).
1. However, assuming qsub/msub are not available, is there another way to do it? What commands can I use instead?
2. I know that some jobs can run in the background, is that an alternative? How do I do it? And would I still be able to check the status of the job or delete it?

Apr 1, 2011I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?
Ubuntu Servers :: Backup Multiple Servers ?
Jan 19, 2010I currently have a group of 3 servers connected to a local network. One is a web server, one is a mysql server, the other used for a specific function on my site (calculation of soccer matches!).
Anyway, I have been working on the site a lot lately but it is tedious connecting my USB hard drive to each computer and copying the files. This means I am not backing up as often as I should...
I have a laptop connected to this same network that I use for development so I can SSH into to the computers, is there any software for ubuntu that can take backups of files that I choose on multiple computers? I know I could rsync but is there something with more or an GUI?
Then I can just every 2 days move the most recent backup from my laptop to the USB drive. Then I will have the backup stored in 2 places if things go kaboom somewhere.
Ubuntu Servers :: Multiple FTP Servers On One Machine?
May 20, 2010I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and have a secure (SSL/TLS) FTP server on it. However, I'd like to use this FTP server to update programs I made using Microsoft Visual Studio. Unfortunately, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom, secure FTP servers cannot be used. Rather than use an insecure FTP server, I want to set up my secure FTP server to be able to access whatever I need to on the machine, and then add an insecure FTP server that only has access to the directory where I put my update files. I am currently using vsftpd as my FTP server. Is there any way that I can set up two FTP servers on this single machine?

Aug 21, 2010I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:

Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

General :: Good Support To Multiple Desktops AND Multiple Monitors
Jun 4, 2010I'm starting to have A LOT of opened windows in my machine. Sometimes within a project, I have e-mail/task management/personal e-mail/twitter, and a lot of different opened applications/terminals in my Linux workstation.Sometimes it would be interesting to have different workspaces to projects instead of this configuration I have nowadays that are classes of work (bad name, I know, but I think you got the idea).I'm starting to think about using two monitors: one with Corporate Management, Work and Personal. The second monitor is only the development state: each workspace here is about a project being worked on instead of groups of works like before. A workspace may be implementing different classes for example.
My question is: I just want to change to a second monitor using the mouse. I want to still be able to change workspaces in the same monitor using keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts wouldn't change monitors, just worskpaces on the same monitor. All the tutorials I read (like this one) only tells how to use multiple monitors but doesn't answer my question about keyboard shortcuts.Does Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or Debian 5.0.5 Lenny) support this envisioned setup (Different workspaces in a way that keyboard workspace switching only works in the current monitor) ? If so, how?I haven't tested this setup, that's why I'm asking. In this question the user says it works exactly how I want it to behave, can someone else confirm it?

Dec 16, 2010Problem with my Internet connection. I can't connect to the update servers. I don't know why. It's a brand new installation, not a week old yet. I can't install the support for restricted media for example. The servers won't refresh in YaST. It tells me it can't download the repomd.xml.asc.
The other problem is that some servers on the web won't load for me either.
For example, I get most of my local news from The Toronto Star, and I can't connect to it's website at all.
I can from Windows (I dual boot) but not SUSE. I don't think its a problem limited to that one website either. I am able to connect to most websites though.

OpenSUSE :: Update On 11.1 System Broke Multiple Programs?
Nov 6, 2010I have 11.1 on a computer. I updated it yesterday. Now K3B, VLC, and XDVDShrink are all broken. Possibly other programs broken as well. VLC refuses to uninstall via Yast. These are high-priority programs for this computer. Multiple people use this computer for multimedia and there is not much to entertain ourselves with in our very cold climate. In other words, it is mandatory that K3B, VLC and XDVDShrink return to operational status.
Should I just upgrade to 11.3, try to fix the broken 11.1? I prefer using KDE3, not KDE4, but I can sacrifice.
CentOS 5 :: Caching Yum Rpms To Update Multiple Nodes?

Like many, I have a number of VMs I run, and it most updates are the same between the nodes. I'm guessing I'd need some sort of http cache? So I can access the application from outside lan. Now the problem starts when the application redirects the traffic to another server 192.168.0.2 according to the input of the users. How can I configure the whole system so that I can access the application running on second servers also?

Jul 28, 2010In my environment we are running DHCP on a Windows 2003 r2 server. This DHCP server also is used with Symantec's 3COM PXE for the desktops. So the desktop's can PXE boot into Symantec Ghost and re-image the PC's with a Ghost (GHO) file. This DHCP server is responsible for assigning IP addresses for all desktops on the network.
We also have several branch offices which this DHCP server provides IP addresses to. These branch offices are on a separate network so I believe this is possible. Each branch office is running a Linux server so I would like to use Clonezilla and allow users in these offices to PXE boot to the local Linux server to run Clonezilla and re-image their notebook/desktops with a specified image that is on the local Linux server in each office. My only concern is the use of the same DHCP server. Is this possible?
Another project I am working on is setting up LTSP with openSUSE in which I want to have about 10 or 15 diskless PCs boot up and retrieve the LTSP image but this would also use the same DHCP server and is on the same network as the regular desktops that use the Symantec 3COM PXE service so is this even possible? If not, any recommendation on how I could get it to work? Could proxyDHCP work or MAC filtering or even a seperate VLAN?

The users are used to work with ubuntu 9.10, and the software from the repositories is switable for them. I've deployed ubuntu 9.10 to all 10 servers (pxe rocks). By now we work with parallel-ssh and cluster-ssh, which allows as to launch the same process to all servers. With this tools this tools the servers remain as independent but with the same software and the same launched command. Now we would like to go to next step and see all the servers as a single one with all the resources from the other 9 as if was its resources. The difference would be substantial in time to process and also time to design the command to launch.

Aug 4, 2010I have Postfix + Unix Accounts + Virtual Domains. I have a bunch of domains hosted on my machine, let's call them [URL] [URL] and [URL]... etc Until know, domain2.com, domain3.com were mapped in virtual domains to [URL] So this is how /etc/postfix/virtual looks like:

Like I said, all mail accounts are unix accounts, so, if for example I have the user "paul" this user will receive e-mail for ALL DOMAINS. [URL]But as it turns out, I now need a COMPLETELY ISOLATED domain... let's call it [URL]. So If I create a new user, let's call it "steve" I want steve to receive e-mail ONLY on [URL] and not on all others.
I would have to redo the whole thing from the beginning. I'd have to comment out the $mydestination parameter in the main.cf file and start using only virtual domains. So if I have the following users: paul, steve, sally, megan, jenny and I want paul and steve to ONLY receive mail for domain1.com, sally and megan to receive mail for domain2.com and jenny to receive mail for domainX.com, my /etc/postfix/virtual file would have to look like this:

I'd have to create the unix account and then start modifying the /etc/postfix/virtual file.

Sep 9, 2010I've got two sound cards fitted, before I've always killed pulseaudio as a pain in the butt.
Without pulseaudio enabled I could run two audio apps simultaneously, ie run a SDR ( software defined radio) app , and listen to music or watch TV at the same time.
However, with puls audio running, you can only run one, either input to either output. So can a second instance of pulseaudio be run, master and slave perhaps ?

Sep 11, 2010I'm trying to set up awstats for my web server which runs ISPConfig3. Due to ISPConfig, my log-rotated files have the extension .log.gz, and the naming syntax of DATE-access.log.gz.
According to awstats documentation, I need their tool to merge the log files, however, I cannot get it to work. I always get file not found or pipe error like messages.

I took a look at permissions, log files are world-readable. Checked path's 1000 times, no typo. When I try to find out whats wrong, the problems usually begins when I try to use the * character in the LogFile variable, ..
