General :: Unexplained Red Dots In Screenshot?

May 8, 2011

I've been having the weirdest problem with some aspect of my operating system: This is a screenshot of Google Chrome 11.0.696.57 running in Linux 2.6.37.6 with Xorg server 1.9.5 with the FGLRX display drivers 8.841 on a Radeon HD 4870. The display drivers, kernel and X server were not upgraded before this started happening. I have also not modified my xorg.conf.

As you can see, the red pixels show up just about anywhere a bitmap is changed. It has been happening in every program and not just the browser. Sometimes they flicker, always appearing at random. As far as I can tell, the Linux TTY (outside of X) is not affected. The fact that this is capturable in a screenshot rather than just appearing as pixels on the screen is what puzzles me. If you have any information as to what might be causing this, and hopefully how to solve it, (or even a theory) please post below.

Other information:

Slackware 13.37
Running Fluxbox 1.3.1
My /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Edit:Switching TTYs (via ctrl-alt-F[1-9]) and back seems to dissipate the effect, at least temporarily.

General :: Unexplained Log Cruft And Possible Dropped Packets On WPA2-Personal LAN

Sep 12, 2010

I've been receiving a LOT of log cruft ever since I installed my WUSB100V2 (using the rt2870sta community driver from the Linux kernel) and was wondering what it all meant.

Many times when these messages occur it is accompanied by slow network speeds and many DNS queries and outgoing SYNs being dropped. I have searched for documentation for these (error?) messages and have come up empty as far as what they mean or how I can stop them from occurring.

I reside on the opposite side of the building from my WAP. I have taken steps to improve the signal strength, but the signal quality hovers between 50% and 70%, sometimes dropping to 40% for unknown reasons.

My /var/log/messages:

General :: Grsync Failure / Rsync Error: Unexplained Error (code 255)?

Sep 19, 2010

I'm trying to sync a folder between my Windows install and my PCLinux install. Same machine, Windows 7 on the C drive and Linux on an external USB hard drive.

Using the Grsync GUI, I searched for the source and destination folders, and then executed the command. Here is the output:

** Launching RSYNC command (simulation mode): pkexec rsync -r -n -t -v --progress -s /media/Win7/Documents and Settings/Paul/Application Data/The Word file:///root/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/The Word/myData

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(601) [sender=3.0.7]
Rsync process exit status: 255

It seems to be doing an FTP operation, whereas all I need is a file transfer. Can anyone point out my error here?

Server :: Unexplained Mails In Postfix Queue / Get Rid Of Them - Why Is So?

Jul 21, 2010

On the postfix mailserver of our company I'm seeing several of these messages in the deferred queue (apologies for the terrible formatting, I couldn't get it any better) code...

looking at the headers, there is probably something wrong with our DNS-server, which we will investigate, but I still have some questions about the failure notice:

- why are the failure notices refused? Is that a fault on the sender side, for example sending the wrong return address?

- where does this mxcorp1.pacific.net.sg[192.169.41.21] come from anyway? I don't see it anywhere in the headers.

General :: Ubuntu - Screenshot Tool That Saves Shots Directly Without Asking For A Filename

Jan 21, 2011

I know how to take a screenshot on my Ubuntu, but I want to take many screenshots within a limited time (taking screenshots of a single execution of a program which I can not pause). Is there a program that takes the "PrtScr" keyboard key in charge and just stores every screenshot without asking? The standard Ubuntu tool pops up a dialog to ask where I want to save the file, I would like a tool that doesn't ask and just saves on the Desktop or wherever as 00001.png 00002.png etc.

General :: Use Command Line And Wmctrl To Make A Window Larger Than The Screen To Get A Huge Screenshot?

Jan 24, 2011

I use a program which makes a large image which I have to scroll to view. The program has no way to save the image, and I have no access to the source to modify it. The only way I have to get the image from the program is by screenshot. My goal is to save the full size image without having to piece together individual screenshots. I'm using this script to try taking a screenshot:

#!/bin/bash
window=$(wmctrl -l | grep "Program$" | awk '{print $1}')
wmctrl -v -i -r $window -e '0,0,0,6030,5828'
wmctrl -i -a $window
import -window $window ~/Desktop/screenshot.png

This uses wmctrl to get the window id ($window) for a window named "Program". It then tries to resize the window to the desired dimensions. It uses imagemagick (import) to save a screenshot.png on the user's Desktop. All of this works except the resize step. I can resize the window using wmctrl -r -e, but sizes greater than the screen size don't work. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and the Gnome Desktop. I run two monitors, but I've tried this with one of them disabled. Is there a way to resize the window larger than my screen to get a huge screenshot?

Part II: I tried using xrandr to set up screen panning, so as to have a bigger desktop than my monitor. xrandr --output LVDS --panning 2600x2500 This command makes the laptop screen pan over a 2600x2500 size desktop, even though it can only show 1440x900 at one time. To turn off the panning, I can use a similar command to set total size and with zeroes for the panning section. This gives me back my original laptop display behavior. xrandr --fb 1440x900 --output LVDS --panning 0x0 This is all done with xrandr, and does not require any Xorg.conf changes (my Ubuntu system doesn't even have an Xorg.conf).

My video card seems to only allow about 6.5 million pixels, even though the maximum dimensions are 8192x8192. That maximum seems to be the maximum for either dimension, but there is a limit to how many pixels can be drawn, which is the width multiplied by the height. Once I did the screen resize, I tried my script again and got a screenshot. The screenshot however is totally scrambled. I'm not sure if it's unable to take a screenshot of an off-screen window or if it is unable to handle the large dimensions of the window. With the panning display, the window should think it is visible, and the window manager should think it is on-screen. So there is a pixel buffer somewhere with those pixels in it, so there should be a way to get a screenshot.

General :: ImageMagick's "import" Command Line Program Failing To Take A Screenshot From CRON Script

Here is the script (shottr.sh):

This is working fine if I execute by hand i.e:

The script itself is being executed (I hear a voice saying: "Screenshot") but the actual screenshot is not taken.

Be assured that it is NOT permission issue (I placed a simple "touch" invocation and file was created)

May be if it's run from cron...it doesn't have a "window" so it can't take a screenshot from nowhere? If that is the case, then how can I workaround it?

Ubuntu :: Dots Indicating Loading But 10.10 Not Starting

Mar 16, 2011

I made the fatal mistake of hibernating on my Lenovo T61. Ubuntu wouldn't wake up after that, I tried pressing all kinds of key combinations and nothing. So I did a hard shut down and now Ubuntu won't start. On the grub menu I chose Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-7 normal mode and it just shows the screen that says "Ubuntu 10.10" and the four dots underneath indicating loading.

So I tried recovery mode and it stops at:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda5: clean, 688078/4988928 files, 15488354/19939072 blocks

I also tried unplugging the laptop and removing the battery and putting it back in and plugging and restarting. Nothing changed. Then I tried restarting without the battery in and now the normal mode just shows a black screen and a flashing cursor. I also have the USB stick I created to install Ubuntu, which worked back then, but now, it won't start from the stick, I checked the Bios options and the USB is the first boot device, I really don't know how else I can make it start from the USB.

Fedora X86/64bit :: 14 Gnome Cursor Morphs To Dots?

May 5, 2011

I'm using Fedora 14 x86 64-bit, Gnome DE, on a Phenom 9750 computer, with a Radeon XT1900 video card and 8GB RAM. Recently, my cursor (normally a black arrow) suddenly changes into a vertical line of small white dots, about an inch long. It's essentially unusable, unless it happens to roll over a hyperlink, since it's invisible on a white background. Logging off and on has no effect. Rebooting sometimes "fixes" it, sometimes not. It has yet to correct without a reboot.Except for regular updates as noticed, the only change in the system in the past month or so was to add nano as a text editor.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update From ISO Hangs With Scrolling Dots On Screen

After this, I tried mounting and running the install from the iso, but since all the files are either .inf or unknown, I don't know how. Next, I tried a trick from the ubuntu site using alt+F2 to run from the iso, and it seemed to work, but now it still tries to DL the updates from the internet instead of just getting them from the ISO. This also happens now if I try to upgrade from the update manager, it keeps asking for the install disk. Is there any way to just use the ISO as though it were a disk? I have been running 9.10 for months with no problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get To A Black Screen With Five Dots Below The Wording / Freeze?

Dec 23, 2010

I recently received a HP Pavilion dv9000 that the previous owner swore had some issues with it. I'm not so sure it had issues, but that's another story. Anyways, I downloaded Unbuntu 10.10 and burned it to a disk. The first time I booted up the machine I told it I wanted to try Ubuntu. I then left the machine and came back in 20min or so and it looked like it had successfully booted. However I quickly realized the screen was frozen. So I turned off the machine and decided I'd try again a few days later. Today I booted up the machine and I get to a black screen with Ubuntu on it with five dots below the wording. It freezes on this screen. I've rebooted several times but I keep getting to the same screen before it freezes.

I then tried a ubuntu-studio dvd I had handy just to see if this would work - and it started installing as expecting, I cancelled it after a while. how to get lubuntu running?
