General :: Ubuntu - How To Increase Buffer Rate On VLC
Jun 12, 2010
I've got some high quality videos I want to run on vlc, but they require a higher buffering rate then the default for vlc. With the default the video skips every second or so and pixelates now and again. I've run the video on vlc on windows before and I found a buffer rate to change to make the video run smoothly, however, I don't remember what the value I changed was and when I looked through the ubuntu vlc options I didn't recognize it immediately.

I'm using CentOS 5.4 servers installed in a VMWare virtual machine with no X.Org server installed, so all access is via command line and the linux terminal. I use Shift-PgUp to view the scrollback buffer, but its size is very limited. How do I increase the size of the scrollback buffer?

I'm often playing videos from my external hard disk, and, well, it has issues. It'll often spin down and it often takes 5-10 seconds to spin back up in order to keep reading files. This is really terrible for video playback, as it'll often completely hang until the drive spins back up. Is there a way that I can tell VLC to set a larger buffer to at least give me more buffer into the future so the drive will have time to spin up when the buffer runs out?

I am having a Oracle server installed on Linux server. I want to clear the buffers after a certain time interval. I use the following command for the same.
echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
Can I have a script which will execute the above script after certain time interval OR a script which will execute the above command when certain memory size is reached.

I would like to set Y and P to copy and paste directly to the system clipboard instead of vim buffer. I don't want any additional commands. Just the normal ones, but they should copy to and paste from the system clipboard and bypass the vim buffer.

How can I pipe the output of a shell command into a new buffer in Vim? The following obviously wouldn't work, but you can see what I'm getting at:
:!echo % | :newtab

I'd like to make an indirect control for Emacs (in Ubuntu Linux) so that I can swipe some text in an xterm with the cursor, cutting it into the X cut buffer, then run a macro in Emacs to parse the cut buffer text to look for text saying "line XXXX" where X is all digits, then go to that line in the current Emacs buffer. I think this is possible by using emacsclient to get emacs to run a macro, then the macro parsing the cut buffer, then issuing a goto-line command to the number that's been parsed. My problem is I don't know how to write the emacs script to read the X cut buffer and parse it.. I've been going through cookbook examples but none seem to fit.
My goal is to ease development. When I have an error/information/status message printed in an xterm, I want to swipe the error message which says something like "syntax error on line 2776" then press a keyboard shortcut which Ubuntu will interpret to launch emacsclient, which causes my already-open Emacs to grab that text, parse it, and go to the line number I just swiped. Only this last step of parsing is the hard part. (Yes, I know you can run a shell INSIDE of emacs, but this is doesn't fit my workflow). How would I make emacs look at that X cut buffer and parse out the line number and issue the "goto-line" command to the current buffer?

I need a shared buffer between user and kernel space. I read that one way is to allocated buffer in kernel and then call mmap from the user space. I searched for an example but couldn't find something useful. If you know, could you please send me any links or sample code that does this..

I am facing a problem while installing backtrack 4.0 on my virtual box. After assigning a hard drive and booting from the live cd, i am receiving a error message as follows:
Loading, please wait...
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 76636
(this statement gets repeated like four times with different logical block id.
SQUASHFS error: squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x5bb337b9
SQUASHFS error: unable to read is index table.
It is not the first time i install operating systems on virtual box though it is the first time i receive such an error with backtrack.

We know that, in a network, data transfer time is dependent on capacity of the receiving node. I have two Linux systems A (sender) and B (receiver) connected. I want to simulate congetion in a network, that means I want to increse the time taken to transfer some data. I believe, I can do this if I can reduce the capacity of the receiver node B. That perhaps possible by decreasing the receiving buffer size of B. How can I change the receiving buffer size of this linux system B?

After reading a SDHC (camera) card with my computer in a non-HC compatible card reader, i guess i destroyed the partition table.
After getting a SDHC-compatible reader i found it seems there is no part. table on the card and no fdisk(1), badblocks(1) can read that card.
Seems they will wait forever to get a part table.
dmesg says:
How to recover the card?

I cannot get my desired resolution and refresh rate in Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid). I want to run at the best my poor monitor can, which in Windows (XP through 7) is 1152*864 with a refresh rate of 72Hz.
I want these setting in Ubuntu, and many grey hairs have been produced in trying to make it happen. I can get the correct resolution, but not the refresh rate.
I'm using the proprietary Nvidia drivers, which are up to date.
System info:
I have a CRT Monitor connected to a laptop via the VGA connector. The monitor is a 16" AOC brand (this is all I know, and for all my efforts I cannot find the manual for it from just this information). The graphics card is a GeForce 9600M GS
Things I've tried:
Using the regular default drivers Editing Xorg.conf in all manner of ways (seems to always be ignored upon reboot. I don't get that). 3 days of googling Asking at the Ubuntu forums.
How can I do this, if I can?
how all of this works, how xorg.conf and the Nvidia program interact and such.

First off I am dual booting Windows 7. While in Win7 I have absolutely NO monitor issues. Since installing 10.04 I get a shaky unreadable display. To remedy the situation temporarily I have adjusted the resolution to 1200/800 but this is not a fix just a band aid. I should be able to run 1920/1080. As soon as I do this I get the shaky screen. I cannot change the refresh rate from 60 mhz. Again I am apprehensive by posting this because I have been flamed in other forums simply for being a noob and not knowing what to do but I would love to tap into the resources of you more experienced members.

Currently my CPU temperature as measured by lm-sensors increases by 1-2 C upto 4-5 C when I start a new process - like a video, music, etc. The change takes place in less than a second. Is this normal or should the change be happening more slowly?
If it is indeed happening too rapidly, what could be the likely causes?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with Core i5 430M.
Edit: I should add that these are temperatures from an HP laptop (dm4t).

I'm running the great game "Capitalism Plus" w wine. This is really a Win-95 game but it runs fine under Wine (a big benefit of Linux, you can run those old Windows games again, which is impossible under WinXP...)
Anyway, here's the problem: The game runs only in 640x480. My monitor is a 22" widescreen 1920x1080. When I start Capitalism, the resolution changes to 640x480 which is fine. However, the refresh rate is 75Hz, which minimizes the actual / active screen to a small window in the middle of the monitor. (Not only for the game, but for the kde desktop.) When I set refresh rate to 60Hz (using krandrtray) everything is fine.
So here's the question: Is there any way I can create a bash-script that sets the refreshrate to 60Hz?
I'm running kde3.5, Debian Lenny on a AMD64 with ATI:s fglrx.

Is there any good tool in GNU/Linux that copy files like cp, but also shows progress and limits speed (and changes limit without interruption) like pv?
Prototype: find source_directory | cpio -H newc -o | pv -s `du -bs source_directory/ | awk '{print $1}'` | (cd /destination/directory && cpio -di)
Also rsync -aP source_directory /destionation/directory/, but this shows progress bars individually and can't change rate after started. Or may be I should just write a wrapper for pv/cpio? Done.

Now i want to increase it without reinstalling ubuntu. Is there any safe way of doing it ? i did some research and came to know that Gparted might be of some help, but i will really be grateful if any of you can guide me.
the use of livecd for example, can i use liveusb instead ? i was thinking of making liveusb of centos 5.5.
Currently i have 3 partitions

My friend bought an old hard drive. He noticed something with the hard drive that it was just replaced with a SATA socket. So meaning, the SATA socket was soldered to the PATA hard disk to replace the PATA socket to SATA socket to make it a SATA.
Now the question is:
1. Does the Transfer Rate of the harddisk (that has been replaced from PATA socket to SATA socket) would be SATA transfer rate? OR would still be PATA transfer rate?

How do I increase the mouse speed in Ubuntu Linux? Running Gnome 2.30.0. I've already maxed out Pointer Speed Sensitivity in the Mouse Preferences control panel. I am not interested in increasing the Acceleration. Is there a config file I can edit to boost it past what the control panel allows?
I know that this mouse can track faster because it does in Windows.

Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value.
If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer)
Note: Asked the same thing on stackoverflow and they directed me here.
