Ubuntu :: Splitting Home Directory To Make Config Folders

Jul 24, 2011

I'm new to ubuntu (installed 3 days ago). I have two disks in my notebook - one hdd (big, 320GB) and one ssd (very fast, 120GB). Everything is on ssd now, but I want to know how can I split my home directory to make config folders (like .thunderbird, .mozilla, .purple) to use ssd (for very fast response), and put movies, pictures, downloads and other folders to use hdd (a lot of space). Simply mounting hdd as /home is not a good option, becouse config files would be on hdd also. Should I mount (or link) all folders like /home/username/Videos to hdd, or is there a better solution?

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:

convert *png output.pdf

The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

General :: Replace DVD / CD Install Images With USB Images

Sep 21, 2009

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.

Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

I am facing a problem while splitting a text file, I need to split a file into some parts and each split file should have 2000 lines, when I do it through "split" command the mother file is kept intact but as per my requirement I need to cut mother file into some parts thus it should not be kept intact.

Example:
file size
motherfile.txt 5000 lines.
after split
motherfile.txt 2000 lines.
childfile1.txt 2000 lines.
childfile2.txt 1000 lines.

General :: Splitting Text File Into Several Parts By Line Count

Sep 21, 2009

I have a utility that works with files. The utility is crashing at after about 120 files. The input to the utility is a file containing a filelist. I want to cut the file with the file names in it to seperate files containing about one hundred or so. My thought was to determine the number of lines/100 and then use head and delete to create temporary files to run the utility multiple times to prevent the crash. When I tried to create a variable using the wc -l command the output gives me the number of total lines but it also includes the filename of the input file. (873 Filename.txt) I can not figure out how to remove the Filename.txt from the variable.

General :: Splitting Large Directory Over Multiple Blank DVDs?

I went ahead and installed DAR as an alternative, as I hear it is designed for this type of task, but I can't figure out which way is heads or tails.

my OS is the newest version of ubuntu 10.

Software :: Download Some Images From A Website - Single Column Of Links To The Images?

Jul 26, 2010

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).

Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.

My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

LV Copy% Devices
data 100.00 data_mimage_0(0),data_mimage_1(0)

The routing table on client A has one entry: 192.168.1.2 dev eth0 The routing table on client B has one entry: 192.168.1.2 dev eth1. Basically the idea is to send the upload traffic one one interface and the download traffic on the other interface. (Client B could serve as a gateway). However, with this setup, well... nothing works. The packets received by Client B are ignored. Does the linux kernel have anything against routing packets coming from an interface, although he thinks the source is on another interface?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Splitting Videos And Maintaining Quality?

Feb 24, 2010

I am trying to use ffmpeg to split a number of videos of different types (WMV, MPG, AVI). I do not want to change anything else, just split them into smaller chunks. The video is split, but the quality of the output file is terrible. I would describe it as "blocky" (I think the correct term is "pixelated"). When I make the player (KMPlayer) much smaller the problem naturally goes away.

The command I am using:

ffmpeg -i original_vid.wmv -ss 00:00:00 -t 00:05:00 first_vid.wmv

The output:

FFmpeg version SVN-r19352-4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2, Copyright (c) 2000-2009 Fabrice Bellard, et al.
configuration: --extra-version=4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2 --prefix=/usr --enable-avfilter --enable-avfilter-lavf --enable-vdpau --enable-bzlib --enable-libgsm --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis

[Code]....

"Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 1000.00 (1000/1) -> 25.00 (25/1)

Seems to mean something, but I couldn't find anything saying that this is the problem or what O should do to correct it.

Software :: Transfer File From One Server To Other By Splitting Then Joining

Apr 8, 2010

I'm trying to transfer a large .tgz file from a CentOS dedicated server to a linux webhost (unknown OS). The problem is the webhost will not allow a 1.1gb file to be uploaded, however it will allow the upload in 149MB chunks. I used the split command to segment my tgz into 7 segments under 150mb. I then uploaded all segments via FTP which worked. Then I tried to join the segments to create the original tgz. The join appears to work with no issues. However, when I try to extract the tgz it appears there is a problem, most, but not all files are extracted and there is this error message:

Code: gzip: stdin: Input/output error
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now It appears the join did not work and the tgz is slightly corrupt. What am I doing wrong? Here's the commands I'm using:

1. Create the original tgz on the dedicated server
Code: tar -czf mysite.tgz ./myfolder
2. Split the tgz into segments
Code: split -b 149m -d mysite.tgz seg

# using the -d switch so the segment files use a numerical suffix
# I now have these files:
seg00
seg01
seg02
seg03
seg04
seg05
seg06
seg07

3. Transfer segments to the other webhost using FTP
Code: # hand typing (not a script)
ftp ftp.mysite.com
myusername
mypassword
binary
cd somefolder
put seg00
put seg01
put seg02
# through to seg07

4. Join up the segments on the new webhost
Code: # this is in a .sh script file
cd /full/path/to/somefolder
cat seg* > mysite.tgz 5. Extract the new tgz
Code: # this is in a .sh script file
cd /full/path/to/somefolder
tar -xzf mysite.tgz
# the above error is now thrown.

That's it. What am I doing wrong that's causing the above error?
