Ubuntu :: Middle / Right Click Drag To Extract Archive?

Oct 30, 2010

I have been looking for a solution to middle or right click dragging an archive to extract it to another folder without any success. It appears this question seems to be asked many times without a single response from anyone.

Quote:

The fact that right click on archive is also missing a simple 'Extract to...' compounds the problem. [URL]

General :: Tar Fails To Extract Archive Containing Special Characters?

Jun 5, 2011

The command tar -xvf wpa_tables.tar gives this error

tar: ./xai-0/334Regency: Cannot open: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

Obviously the backslash is giving tar some problem, but I've been all over the docs and can't figure out how to either make it skip this file or interpret the character literally. Here's my command history to show some of the options I've tried which don't work.

tar --no-wildcards -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --exclude ./xai-0/\334Regency -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --exclude "./xai-0/\334Regency" -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --ignore-command-error -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --ignore-failed-read -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --transform 's/\/slash/g' -xvf wpa_tables.tar ./xai-0/\334Regency

I'm totally out of ideas at this point and would welcome some input from more experienced members.

Ubuntu :: Left Click Stopped Working?

Jan 5, 2010

I did an internet upgrade last night and right around then I think I also got a little liquid around the touch-pad of my laptop and now the left click won't work in Ubuntu on either my touch-pad OR mouse so I am not sure if maybe the connection for the left click on the touch-pad is shorted causing it to stay "clicked" which somehow disables the left click on the mouse... On my windows xp partition(which I am using now) I am able to use the left click on the mouse but still not the touchpad... Anyway I am wondering if there is a way to disable to touchpad via console or some other way to get around this so I can back my important docs and files and then "mouse" it till I can get a new laptop.

General :: Right-click On Mouse Not Working On Fedora 11

Mar 24, 2010

I have Fedora 11 installed on my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop, and have been using the installation for many months. Just this past couple of days, the 'right-click' on the mouse (whether using the trackpad mouse on the latop or an external mouse) has stopped working, but not completely. I can still right-click in firefox, on the bar at the top of screen, in a terminal window, etc. However, right-click is not working on the desktop, that is I can not right-click on a folder or a file. Nothing happens. If I right-click on the trash-can, nothing. So I know the mouse buttons are fine as right-click does work in firefox.

General :: Wake On Lan Stopped Working?

Jan 3, 2011

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 w/ wireless connection to desktop running Windows 7. I had it set up so I could execute a script to send a wakeonlan to the desktop. It worked fine for several weeks, but all of a sudden it stopped working. I've checked my script and it still looks good as far as I can tell. (I'm not that adept at script writing, so I wouldn't necessarily recognize a problem.) I've also checked the Windows machine to make sure the network adapter still is set to allow wake-on-lan.

BTW: my wake up script is as follows:
#!/bin/bash
wakeonlan xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

Where the x's replace my actual MAC address.

Recently my wireless stopped working on my Debian testing system. It just doesn't connect. The best I get (only after a reboot) is that it says it did connect, but failed to get IP address. But usually it just tries to connect, disconnects straight away, connects again etc. so it never manages to associate correctly.

I am sure it did work about a month ago, stopped working after recent upgrades from the repository.

General :: Mouse Single-click Equals Double-click - Can't Select The Entire URL By Clicking

Apr 13, 2011

when i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.

if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.

Ubuntu :: Archive Manager Is Not Working (Can't Download Things)?

Jun 20, 2010

I have upgraded my Ubuntu to 10.04, in hopes that my problem would dissapear. Sadly, it hasn't. You see, my archive manager isn't cooperating with me and it's not letting me download anything. For example, I tried to download Sony Vegas and it gave me the following error. (Among other things, but this data seems more important.)" End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In thelatter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. "

This occured when I tried to open the "SonyVegas 8.0 exe" . I have unzipped this file. I think "exe" has something to do with Windows, if so, is there a way I can convert this file so it can be adapted to my archive manager? Or is my archive manager not working, correctly? Does anyone else have these problems, also? Please, I want to be able to download things and my archive manager is the reason I can't.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Suddenly Stopped Working AND Rfkill Command Not Working

Jul 13, 2011

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.

Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.

I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

General :: Shell Script Has Stopped Working - Why Is "" Appended To Filename And Does It Matter

Jun 8, 2011

I am new to Linux, but was put in charge of our company's Amazon presence. My problem is that all of the sudden, a shell script we have been using has stopped working, and returned an odd error that I simply can't decipher. The shell script is pretty simple, and is run on our crontab (however manually running it causes the same error as well). The script name is "sendh.sh" and to run it in Linux is simply typing "sh sendh.sh". Here it is:

[Code]....

Yes, obviously those files are in the directory, I can see them through the "ls" command (or through WinSCP as well). When run one by one, each command works fine, it's just when using this "sendh.sh" shell script then it fails. Does anyone know why "" is appended to the filenames when I try to run it, or what the heck "ambiguous redirect" means?

OpenSUSE :: One Click Install From 11.3 Not Working?

Aug 9, 2010

I'm using OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome I'm having trouble installing new packages from the One Click Installs of Software Open Suse and from Packman. I get the following error each time. The install link or file you opened does not contain instructions for this version of openSUSE.

Having done a new install of Open Suse 11.3 I'm trying to get back to using Mplayer and Cairo-dock, just to mention two packages. Is the version 11.3 still too new, or is there a fault in the auto installs of 11.3? I have managed to download the rpm of Cairo-dock but the Cairo-dock-plugins have dependency problems which I presume should be resolved using the One Click Install - when it works.
