View 4 RepliesI'm new to using a BIND DNS server. I currently have one set as a master zone on my LAN. My question is how can I add a record for my local lan that will resolve without typing in the FQDN? For example I want to be able to type "server" instead of "server.domain.com".

When I try to do a reverse lookup at the server, it shows the correct output but when I try lookup from Internet it shows something like - "mysite.com points to a.b.c.d, which has no d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa PTR record"

I am configuring bind9 on fedora 9(sulphur).I have configured /etc/named.conf and created zone file in /var/named/I have started the service but when I am executing the command nslookup mydomain.com it is not able to resolve the name.Another problem I am facing when I do telnet localhost 53,I am able to connect.but when I do telnet myip 53 it does not connect.Seems to be a firewall problem but I ve disabled iptables selinux completely even I ve disabled dnsmasq but still not working.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 to provide DHCP and Internet Sharing on my home LAN. In a previous configuration, I was running Fedora + AMAHI to provide the same services. As most of my linux devices are Ubuntu, I decided to decommission and rebuild my server. I've been able to configure all of my services with the exception of one. As a rule, I assign static IP or reservations based on MAC address's for any of my network devices or appliances.
One cool feature that AMAHI provided a GUI for, was the ability to recognize devices by name as well as IP. i.e.. "http://192.168.1.50" or "http://home-NAS" Going from memory, the long name upon first entry may actually have been "http://home-NAS.adomainname.com"? From my reading, I think I either need to setup up a Static Alias or CNAME for each assigned IP. I can't find any tutorial's that will walk me through this process. I'm guessing I need to generate the records under one of the master DNS zones, but that is just a guess?
I need to copy a large number of files, it comes to 1 lakh from one server to another. When I tried various commands using scp , ftp etc. It is saying "Arg list too long". In which way can we copy all the files. The Two servers are under Linux.

My problem is that my phone's IP address changes every 10-30 minutes, and my server is IP whitelisted. So in order for me to login to my server I need to somehow record my Phones IP address into the "/etc/hosts.allow file". Getting the IP of my phone is simple, for this I set up an account at dyndns.org. My phone successfully updates it's ip to the site whenever it changes. For this example I will use "linuxquestions.dyndns.org" In order to get my phones IP I will run a "nslookup" on linuxquestions.dyndns.org every 10 minutes. For this I will set a cron job to run every 10 minutes.

I help run a school server for our Linux class. I create temp accounts for tests and now I just want to delete them. I really should delete the old users too but the Professor likes to let them have access even after the class.
In our organization there are around 1000+ users are using mails. The mailing system is implemented under RHEL using postfix and dovecot. For user based quotas i have implemented Disk Quota. But the problem when i want to edit quota for multiple users with similar limits i'm doing "edquota user" for every users. It seems very difficult. Now I wanna know:
1. Is there any way to edit quota value for multiple users at a single shot?
2. Also there is any method to send alerts mail to the end users on disk utilization?

Recently if I have been getting Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE) errors when using mobile phones to send. The ip in postfix is allowed to relay but I suspect that the mobile provider is using DHCP to issue address to the phone (though I have check the ip addresses are always allocated the same) I have checked via a fixed ip that is allowed in the relay and this does not generate the same error. Does anyone know what I can change in Amavis or Postfix to sort this out, because legal mail is being rejected via the mobile phones at the moment.

Current setup:
Client --> Router (DNS Server) --> Internet
New BIND server setup:

I have thousands of audio files in all sorts of formats. Whenever I install a distro this means that I always have to download a ton of different audio stuff as well (and I really don't understand linux audio). Typically this means gstreamer good, bad and ugly, xine, GNOME Mplayer and god knows what else. If I could change the formats of all files into a simple FOSS format I would. Is there a program that can detect current formats and do a bulk convert, into ogg maybe?

Webmin - Check, ftps-fileZilla - Check, Apache -It Works BUT I cant seam to set up Apache as a named server using Bind DSN. Tried most of the help in the fourms and ..... I had installed the Yum packages, chroot, etc. and edited the config files by hand. When that didn't work, I erased the server and started over using Webmin to build everything for me. Same result. I am still quite new to all this but I guess we were all beginners once, this forum seems very helpful.Here is my situation, I will give as much detail as I can.I have a dedicated server which is running CentOS release 5.5.Initially I had Plesk installed, but when I upgraded PHP I damaged the Plesk configuration, and so I installed Webmin instead.
All seems to be fine with this, apart from the DNS configuration / BIND server.I know this because I have one site which uses an external DNS server and this works fine (i.e I can access it from a browser). All the others don't resolve - i.e the ones I set up in Plesk.I've done a bit of investigating to see what is going on, but I'm stabbing in the dark a little.
