I store all my important data on a backed up, shared drive. I'd like to keep my deleted files around, but not have them using space on the share. I have a local drive on this machine which I want to use, but I cannot figure out how to move the location of the trash can. I am using redhat with nautilus.
View 1 RepliesI have formatted a second internal drive as ext3. It worked fine until I copied (rsynch) my /home to the new drive. Now when I try to delete anything I'm forced to delete immediately or skip the deletion. I also tried moving the /usr/local directory to the second drive and it works fine, it doesn't break the Trash. I tried moving /home back to the root drive and the problem is gone. The second drive again works properly. I can reproduce this. The problem only occurs when I move the /home directory to the new drive.

I have an SSD and i was wondering if i could change my trash location to an SD card that i always have plugged in, so that i write less to the drive and maybe extend the life of my ssd.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUnder 8.04 lts moving a file to Trash under Gnome/Nautilus resulted in the file being moved to the Trash directory, from where I could then delete it. It was an extra layer of protection against mistakes.
Now when I right click on a file and choose move to Trash, it deletes immediately without the protection.
I see no way to turn it back on. Is this a change in the way Nautilus is meant to work, or is there a switch someplace to put it back?
My trashcan is pointing to the "/" directory instead of the "~/.Trash" directory. When I type in "trash:/" in Nautilus, it is also opening the "/" directory.Does somebody know how to change this?I am running RHEL5 and I am using GNOME.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been looking into libtrash to give me the ability to recover files that users mistakenly delete from Samba/Netatalk/ProFTPD shares.But I have some questions about getting a specific libtrash configuration.We have a RAID6 shared files partition and all our users have full read and write access to /mnt/raid6/shared through Samba/Netatalk/ ProFTPD...Reading through all the docs supplied with libtrash it seems to suggest that the trash folder can only be located in the user's home folder.
This has prompted a couple of questions:
1) Having gone through the docs, I can't find a place to specify the location of the trash folder.I can specify the name of the trash folder, but it seems like it's automatically created under the user's home directory.I'm looking to have the trash folder also stored on the RAID6 partition.Because the boot/OS drive is a smaller 120GB drive, and the RAID6 is 4TB. So if someone deleted 3TB of files, the trash folder wouldn't be able to take them all as the trash folder's on the 120GB boot drive.
Is there a way to specify the absolute location of the trash folder?I'd like to have a single trash folder for all users of the machine.
2) Since this is a server, most of the daemons will be running as user nobody/samba/ whatever. Not an actual interactive user account with a home folder etc.
I have read the note about this in the docs and it seems that user nobody will need write access to the trash folder in order to put files in there.However it will rarely be the case that it's an interactive user removing files from the terminal. I'm only looking for protection if any of the server daemons remove files.
Does libtrash run in the background or is it only active when an interactive user is logged in?Since it seems libtrash is activated by a variable in /etc/profile
Is libtrash suitable for what I'm looking for?Anyone got any alternate suggestions for what I'm trying to do?Is there something I could be doing on the filesystem level? The FS of the RAID 6 array is ext3 but can always change that if there's something better out there!OS is CentOS 5.5 64bit
I have an opensuse server which handles 5-8 sites, a mail server and a nameserver.I will move it to a new location and I'll have a different IP. Now, I didn't configure the server myself, so I don't know what to do so that the mail server, the sites and the nameserver to work in the new location with a new IP.
Does it suffice to change the IP of the nameserver from my domain registrar? What any other modification I'll have to do in order for the mail and sites to work at the new location?I searched tutorials on moving a server to a new location but I didn't find any...
When I move something to Trash it doesn't show the option of "Empty Trash". I can use "move to Trash" and it just moving there like some ordinary folder, but shift+del give me an option for deleting the files. Using OpenSUSE 11.3 32bit.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with a couple of folders in the Trash. If I click on the Trash icon, 2 foldersare there, and when I try to delete them, it just says "Failed to delete the item from the trash"
But when I go to .local/share/Trash there are no files there! Anyway, I tried using the command "sudo rm -rf .local/share/Trash", it shows no error, but the files continue when I click in the trash icon.
I have installed fedora 11, now i want to install touch driver for my dell 15 laptop. when i m moving cursur its moving but when i m clcking on touch pad to open anything its not opening, to open i have 2 select any file then i have to click touchpad keys.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI like the buttons on the left. I'm running 10.04 & I know how to move them. The problem is that changing themes will move them back right. OK, if the new theme has them on the right that's OK. But going back to the other theme doesn't change them back. They don't seem to be controlled by the theme, or I'm just not doing it right.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

Anyway I am missing the possibility of writing manually the folder you want to go on nautilus using the Location bar. It was used to have some kind of icon which you can click and it switched between graphich breadcrumbs or the location of the folder and you could changed it manually, you know what I mean?

Now I want to undo this, but Trash won't open. top output doesn't even indicate that nautilus is taking up resources.

I went to /usr/share/icons/Mist but i didn`t find any trash icon there. I was thinking to change all the trash icons from there with my custom icons (empty trash icon and full trash icon).

One preference I have is for a trashcan on the desktop. I have found instructions for installing a trashcan on older versions of Mint, but have not been able to get any of them to work on Mint 11. I just end up with a text file on the desktop that doesn't recycle deleted files.

Is there anyway to hide that option for the trash? I know I have done this several times before and now its happening alto with the project I am working on. It would be nice if I could disable that option.

I tried to move a file to the trash when I got this error message: "The trash has reached its maximum size! Cleanup the trash manually." I don't have any files in the trash. I went back to Gnome, and was able to delete the file. I opened up Dolphin while still in Gnome, and couldn't delete anything, so I know that this isn't a KDE problem

I figured I could just replace files on it like .mozilla folder.I currently have OSS 11.3 where I chose to copy and paste .mozilla from OSS to external HD. I was denied access to copy over certain files.Then I made the bonehead maneuver of trashing .mozilla from the external HD. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have built gnome-2.28.1 from scratch (source) with gnome I compiled GDM and many other programs. GDM is starting fine, I can enter my user on the login prompt and login without problems. When I'm in the desktop I can't access the Computer or Trash locations clicking on the icon or even through Nautilus, the same error happening:
Error: Operation not supported.
I tried debugging by hand running the follow command: gvfs-ls trash://
Which tells me exactly Error: Operation not supported.
On my ubuntu system, lsof | grep gvfs returns a lot of gvfsd* daemons, like gvfsd-computer and gvfsd-trash. On my Scratch system lsof | grep gvfs doesn't return anything. My prefix used when building gnome was /opt/gnome and sysconfdir on /etc/gnome/2.28.1. lsof shows me that D-Bus is running, actualy gdm starts gnome with dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session.
And inside my /etc/dbus-1/session-local.conf I have:

Well, I done many tweaks around and still can't display gvfs location, what I think is very odd is that lsof doesn't returns any gvfsd* daemon running.
using the command ln -s ~/Desktop ~/.local/share/Trash I get this message.ln: creating symbolic link `/home/denish/.local/share/Trash': File exists But the link isn't in my desktop. So I tried accessing the Trash folder using cd. I cd into ~/.local/share then try the following command.cd Trash I get this message. bash: cd: Trash: No such file or directory When I type ls in the share folder I get the following.
gsettings-data-convert gvfs-metadata Trash
So the trash folder is in there but i can't access it. Why? Also I want a computer shortcut in my desktop like in windows where I can access all the folders from.

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

How do I go from one directory or file or whatever they are, to another and once I'm there what do I do to see what is in the download file. View 4 Replies View RelatedWe are really scratching our heads on this one.We moved 3 Dell PowerEdge servers with Fedora 12 x86_64 from one datacenter to another.2 of them are fine but the 3rd we cannot log into any more.The KDE login screen comes up,e user names are shown, but our passwords don't work.Going to the console, we cannot log in as root with the password either.Also, I set up shared keys for ssh between the 3 boxes so that I could ssh between machines without entering my password -- that doesn't work either. This one is one of the head scratchers since /home is on a different disk.I'm 1,600 miles away and the tech that went into the cage to try from the console does not know Linux. Dunno how he got picked...
What exactly would have been corrupted to cause this behavior -- unable to login locally AND ssh authorized_keys no longer works?Oh, and apparently they were initially able to get into the machine from the console after the move since they were able to configure the NICs. But now we can't.We know how we can get a root login on a reboot from GRUB, but we don't know what to look for as far as what might be wrong with the system once we're in
