just did a dual boot or whatever you call it last night)and I can't figure out how to connect to my home wireless internet. I checked in one of the menus, and it says "firmware missing". Does anybody have an idea of what I need to do to fix this? If I haven't been specific enough, please ask for more information. I'm not really sure what to include.
View 1 Repliesafter installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"
I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.

I've been through this before with my 2008 macbook air BCM card whose firmware isn't included in installs. In the past I've manually installed the b43-fwcutter package an extracted some firmware... That doesn't seem to be working here.
I've used [URL]i ... cefirmware to troubleshoot. I have not been able to get b43 or wl to work.
I attempted to install the "firmware-b43-installer_015-14.1_all.deb" package; however it depends on wget to download and install "broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2" from wlfinger.com.
So I manually installed b43-fwcutter and used it to extract the broadcom-wl-5 file referenced....
modprobe wl says wl doesn't exist and modprobe b43 doesn't seem to work.

I tried something from broadcom that produced make errors "/lib/modules/3.2.0-4-amd64/build: No such file or directory"... I think this means I need some kernel development packages, broadcom says:

On Ubuntu, you will need headers and tools. Try these commands:

I'm having trouble install this stuff without the net and not sure installing generic headers and build-dep outside of apt-get is the way to go... linux-headers-3.2.0-4-amd64_3.2.57-3+deb7u2_amd64.deb has alot of dependencies that would take me a while to find and download.
I decided to hit the update icon.It did not finish updating before the power was interrupted. How I get an Error occurred. stating, " E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run'dpkg--configure -a'to correct the problem. E:_cache->open()failed,please report. I am lost how to correct this script error.I am sure it is easy. I can open google earth that was downloaded, but not the web.

The connection list shows a lot of networks available, but mine is always absent from the list. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a headless Jaunty server that I need to access from both mac and PC clients. If the server has been rebooted, I can SSH into it, but I can not VNC into it unless I unlock the keychain. The problem is that I can't figure out how to unlock the keychain from SSH connections, so the only available method is to attach a keyboard to the physical box and enter the keychain password at the server itself.Is there a Terminal command that I can use to unlock the keychain? I have seen references to the 'security' command but that appears to be unavailable to Jaunty?
Is there an even better method than a Terminal command? I don't want to be putting passwords into the Terminal log if I can help it. Ideally, I would connect via SSH, confirm the keychain somehow, and tunnel in through VNC.

I've recently burned Fedora 15 into a CD, in order to install from there onto my computer. However, when boot into Fedora, my wireless doesn't work, instead, it says that firmware is missing.I have had exactly the same problem installing other Linux distros, such as Ubuntu. When I consulted the support at Ubuntu, they were unable to solve the problem. The 'missing firmware' problem is exactly the same in other Linux distros, so I'm pretty much guessing that it's the same problem and is due to my wireless card incompatibility or something.

When I click on the wireless I get a message saying that I am missing firmware. I've tried connecting via ethernet, however this doesn't work either, would it be a problem if I just found a download for firmware, downloaded on another comp and copy it to my linux computer?

I would like to have all traffic from the ethernet connection out through the wireless (basically using the box as a router) however I am having some trouble doing this.
I have done this before on Windows however I am having some trouble doing this on linux, I have tried using Squid Proxy however I am having some trouble using configuring/using it.
I am using Yellow Dog Linux however I am willing to change to any other distro as long as it is compatable with PS3 (as this is what im using linux on)

In the past I've installed 9.10 using a hardwired network port for the web with the above card in the machine. After the install I got a notification of an update which downloaded the appropriate software for the above wireless card. Worked like a charm. Today I installed 11.04 and zilch. No wireless. Supposedly the firmware is missing. I guess my question is why is something that worked well in the past now missing?

Everything seems to run nice and slick.. except one thing.. the wireless is giving me the old "Device not ready (firmware missing)" So I can only use my lappy on a leash.
It's a pretty common Broadcom NIC... and I've tried running the System / Administration / Additional Drivers and nothing comes up.
It seems to me I need a driver someplace...I don't know where or how to get it installed.

So, I am having certain issues regarding Debian installation. Since my Wi-Fi card, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG, requires non-free drivers not provided within Debian install image, I am bound to use USB stick during installation process to get those drivers, iwlwifi-3965-1.ucode and iwlwifi-3965-2.ucode, to enable Wi-FI on my system. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get debian-installer to detect drivers present on the machine. I have tried virtually everything - downloading drivers from multiple sources, renaming drivers properly, using ext4 instal of fat32, using gpt instead of msdos, placing files in /firmware instead of root directory - but no matter what I do, the outcome is the same. USB stick seems to be working properly. Am I bound to downloading non-free image now, or is there a solution?
