General :: $LD_LIBRARY_PATH Get Unset When Using Screen With Bash?
Jun 16, 2010
This is related to http://superuser.com/questions/27376/why-does-my-ld-library-path-get-unset-launching-terminal, but a different set of symptoms.First, /usr/bin/screen is setuid as per the other question. Second, the default shell on this system is /bin/tcsh for various historical reasons, and we're not allowed to chsh to /bin/bash, so I typically run bash manually immediately after login. Third, I almost always use screen, but I want ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen to create a new bash "tab", so I always invoke bash first.
That is:
{~} $ echo $SHELL
/bin/tcsh
[code].....

I am using Firefox 1.5.0.9 in RHEL 5.0. I have a application which needs to load some jar files to the firefox browser, for which I am adding the path in LD_LIBRARY_PATH in ~/.bashrc.The issue is when I launch the firefox through a shortcut, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH is unset, and it just sets it to Firefox specific libs.Additionaly if I run firefox through command line it sets it perfectly fine, and appends the Firefox libs to the already set LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

If you set or export an environment variable in bash, you can unset it. If you set an alias in bash, you can unalias it. But there doesn't seem to be an unfunction.
Consider this (trivial) bash function, for example, set in a .bash_aliases file and read at shell initialization.
function foo () { echo "bar" ; }
How can I clear this function definition from my current shell? (Changing the initialization files or restarting the shell doesn't count.)

Code:
#loop until there are no more files
while [ ${#files[@]} -gt 0 ]; do
for num in `seq 1 ${#files[@]}`; do
wurd=`tail -4 ${files[$num-1]}`
[code].....
Everything works.. but when it has to unset.. it breaks.. it doesnt give an error though.. it just jams the program.

I can't store LD_LIBRARY_PATH in /etc/profile. After restart the variable is empty. All OK with any other variable, for example INFORMIXDIR, but not with LD_LIBRARY_PATH. If I use EXPORT command in the console all OK. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. What's wrong?

I installed the version of ClamAV that is provided by OpenSuse. The problem with that is that when a new version of ClamAV shows up I constantly get complaints when I run both freshclam and clamscan for at least three weeks when my version of ClamAV supplied by OpenSuse goes out of date. So I uninstalled the clamav OpenSuse provides using the GUI software control panel. Then I downloaded the source and the signature from ClamAV. It verified. I first tried to do a ./configure (as root) but it said I needed a clamav user. So I created:
Group: clamav (2001)
User: clamav (2001)
I picked the UID / GID to be that to avoid collisions with what ever you may have. After that the configure, make and install went fine. I then edited both the clamd.conf file and freshclam.conf files in /usr/local/etc. There was a bit of path confusion problem with the old freshclam and the new one so I did a ^D in my su'd xterm, and then su'd again. This time it showed the following for where things are:

I am unable to use clear or cls command on bash shell. I have recently installed Cygwin and am using that for practicing unix commands.
I see that I can use Ctrl + L to clear the screen. I created an alias in my .bashrc to do the same as
alias cls='^L'
This is how i defined other aliases e.g.
And they work. Hence I assume cls will work too but this is what I get when I try to give cls on command prompt. Am i missing something? Is there a way to do this?
Then someone suggested, You cannot alias keystrokes to commands or vice versa. You could just alias cls to an echo command: echo -en "x0c"
And I added the following to .bashrc,
Sourced the .bashrc file. No errors but cls still does not clear the screen. Infact when I typed the echo -en "x0c on command prompt as well, nothing happened. What does this command do?

I've written a script (that doesn't work) that looks something like this:
#!/bin/sh
screen -dmS "somename" somecommand
for i in {0..5}; do
screen -dmS "name$i" anothercommand $i
done
For some reason, if I copy and paste this into a terminal, it creates 7 detached screen sessions as I expect. If I run it from within a script, however, I get only the first session, "somename," when I run screen -ls.
Edit: If the same can be accomplished another way (e.g. with multiple screen windows instead of sessions), I would be open those solutions as well.

I recently installed a Slackware-13.1 32 bit system and I encountered an odd problem. I had a texlive-2010 package from slackbuilds.org, previously compiled on another 32 bit Slack-13.1 system. I just installed the precompiled package on the new system. However, whenever I tried to issue a latex command, kpathsea complained that it cannot find the shared library file libkpathsea.so.6. I googled a bit and I found that this could be circumvented by setting the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH to "/usr/share/texmf/lib", where the library in question actually is.
This solved the problem. The weird thing is that on other machines I have installed, kpathsea had no issues whatsoever and I did not have to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. The only difference is that on those systems I had compiled and installed texlive, not just installing a precompiled package. Could that be causing the issue?

Does anyone know if there is a way to "unset" processor affinity? So if you bind a process to just one proc, but then want to tell the OS to revert to normal behavior? Also, when you bind a process to a processor, can other processes use that process or does it have exclusive usage of that proc?

For some reason it seems like my Thunderbird 3.x has a limit of 80 chars per line enabled, so when I edit a message, it puts a line feed on or before that limit.
I think it could be set when I installed Enigmail for using GPG, that changes some default values, but I'm not sure.
Anyway I would like to avoid this issue, so I can write lines as long as I want, but I've not found a configuration option to do this within "Preferences" dialog.

'readonly HISTFILE'
but the user could tamper with the histfile itself. Like:
rm -f $HISTFILE;
rm -f $HISTFILE; mkdir $HISTFILE;
rm -f $HISTFILE; ln -s /dev/null $HISTFILE;
I'm experimenting with PROMPT_COMMAND to execute a command each time the user executes a command and so log it somewhere else.This post was pruned from the 2009 Is there a way to prevent users from changing or unset their HISTFILE variable? thread. Please do not resurrect old threads but instead create your own (and maybe provide a link to the old one).

Failed login attempts are logged to syslog with the user id or login id set to UNKNOWN_USER or UNSET.Anybody know if this is configurable. I would rather it just pass the actual id that the user used. Doesn't matter if it exist or not, just want to know if someone is guessing at user names and what those user names are

I normally use the Evince Document Viewer for .pdf files. However, sometimes Adobe Reader is better. I recently downloaded (the Linux version directly from the Adobe website) and installed Adobe Reader. Somehow it set the default viewer for .pdf files to Adobe Reader. Even if I right click on a .pdf document, select evince, and check the box to make evince the default viewer, the next time I click on a .pdf file Adobe Reader comes up. Adobe must have set some configuration file to force Adobe Reader to be used. Does anybody know how to change this, so Evince is my default document viewer again?
As an aside I am suspicious that Adobe plants some cookies or other bad stuff in my system and reports stuff back to Adobe. Does anybody know if this is true, and if so, how I can get rid of this stuff.

I have a bash script that I want to be running on a "clean" screen, but when the script finishes/exits I want to see what was previously on the screen. Any thoughts? The "Clear" command does not enable me to get the information back, and the "Screen" Command runs the program in the original window, so you see nothing until the new screen is exited.

I've wondered for years how it works and how I can change it. For example, opening a document with vim, or opening a man page, and then exiting out of it will sometimes (depending on the distro) clear the screen and leave your prompt at the very top. other times, it leaves the contents of whatever you had open on-screen and your prompt is at the bottom.

What happens when the script executes is that the ssh connection works and parks me at the remote hosts's shell login. Therefore, the "firefox" command refuses to execute. I need to know how to make the "ssh" connection occur, stay open, and go into the background so that the rest of the script can execute.If I could also do this with the "firefox" line so that the entire term window could be closed would also be helpful.
