I can't figure out what those "~"'s are doing. From the comments it's keeping mtab open to write the next (how many?) commands?
i was trying to figure out a way to write my own linux commands.. in fact i wanted to write a shell script to simulate an already existed linux commands like 'cd','ls' and'adduser'i just dont know the language of scriptting and even doesnt know the steps to make a script
View 3 Replies View RelatedI stream my local police station dispatch on the web using an icecast/darkice configuration [URL]. The downside of using this software is that once you initiate darkice, a terminal has to be open - the process does not run in the background.
I tried placing a monitor on my server (ouch, that hurt) and keeping darkice alive that way, but my mail server kicks the process. Now, I set the KeepAlive variable to something outrageous and keep an ssh session open on my desktop box to keep the stream going. Screen does not work as Postfix boots that as well.

I've observed a problem which stops me from mounting my external hard disk into my machine. I used a bash script to perform the mounting operation; but the script faced error, Whereas the mount command works properly correct when I use it directly in command line.

mount_point= fdisk -l | sed -n '$p' | cut -c1-9
mount $mount_point /mnt
the code should have split the mount location of external hard disk in /etc/fstab and pass the mount_point' variable to mount command, but it doesn't.
ERROR:can't find /mnt in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
I tried to mount my CD Rom drive and got this response: "mount: can't find cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"
I did see the CD Rom drive briefly after I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 but I couldn't access the drive and when I logged back in.
I'm a noob in Ubuntu. I need the program which will help me to learn different ubuntu commands. I often forget them and after reinstall I don't want to search them in Google. Now I write them in the standard text editor and my code looks like this:

I'm writing output of top command to a file However since top does not provide time I would like to append the 'date' command and then write all this to a file.
so something like top -d 1 -b; echo 'date' >>file
I want to do some sort of emacs scripting. Means I want to write a script with several commands like searching copying etc. and then execute it inside of emacs. I'm sure this is possible, but I wasn't able to find a way to do so.

However, when I click "Show Desktop", it minimizes everything, including this terminal. Would I be able to edit the setting for this so it keeps the terminal up

View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday I tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 using the upgrade manager. About half way through, my computer froze up and the only thing I could do was reboot my computer. It had already finished downloading all the upgrades and the computer froze while it was trying to install the upgrades. When I boot my computer and the Grub screen appears, I chose the Ubuntu OS (I have a dual boot system of Ubuntu and Windows XP). When it goes to boot Ubuntu, it gives me a blank screen and then a box in the right hand corner that says this:
"Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Then the screen remains blank. No cursor, no mouse pointer, nothing. I have researched this error message and it is either caused by not having any free space on my hard drive or that the upgrade packages weren't installed properly. In my case, it could be both. It is definitely the packages not be installed properly but I don't know how to find out if there is no free space on the hard drive partition for Ubuntu. Some of the solutions are to use the following commands in the terminal:
sudo apt-get clean
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
The last command might cause me to lose previous settings, so that would be a last resort if the first two commands don't work. So my main issue is that I cannot open a terminal. My computer is set up to automatically log in. When my computer boots, I have the Grub screen which allows me to choose the Ubuntu OS, Ubuntu in recovery mode or Windows Xp. However, when I choose Ubuntu in recovery mode and select "c" for the command line, it does not recognize the "sudo" command. Same when I choose the command line in the regular Ubuntu OS. When I type "sudo apt-get clean" (without quotes), it says "Sudo command not found." I cannot find the command lines that would be the equivalent of a "sudo" command to use in recovery mode.
If you hit the TAB key while in the command line of recovery mode, if gives a list of commands but I don't see a way to open up a terminal window. For example, when I type terminal_input, it just says, Active: Console, Available: usb_keyboard." I have also tried selecting the Ubuntu OS, waiting for it to boot and then hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 but it does not give me a log in screen. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 and neither of those give me a log in screen either. It is just a blank screen. No cursor or mouse pointer is visible. All I want is the ability to open up the terminal so I can run "sudo apt-get clean" and "sudo dpkg --configure -a".
v10.4 in place, new install. Now this is really weird, my mtab keeps on being replaced with a default mtab (from where?). I loose my NFS mounts and only notice when they cannot be reached. This also happens it seems randomly (just make it easier to debug and fix)
Now what process has the ability/authority to replace my mtab, that process should have sudo authorization, correct? Is there some kind of silly root kit doing this?
I am working on a small project for making a small configuration tool for ubuntu 9.10 for new linux users, that make their system working easily without knowledge of the linux commands.I created a gui in glade and loaded the gui with my python program to show up, now i wish to have some python codes that can launch a gnome terminal (and also pass some linux commands to it) on the click of a button contained in the glade file.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy HD contains a Windows, Fat32, two Linux & swap partitions. Recently, I had to recover my partition table with "testdisk", due to a foolish attempt to resize a partition.I recovered all partitions, with the exception of my root partition. I left that unallocated, then reformatted it with GParted, to be of a larger size.All data has been recovered & the PC works fine, just as it always has.The wierd thing is that the original "root" partition seems to co-exist on the same partition as my Fat32 data(???)GParted shows my root partition as almost full, when it should only be about half full....then my Fat32 partition shows empty, when it should be about 3GB full. Root should only be about 5GB, not almost 9GB.I believe that my mtab & fstab are corrupt relative to the partitions that GParted lists, and need to be fixed. However, I don't know where to start.?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using some milters on a Sendmail box that recommends using a RAMdisk [tmpfs] to store temporary files, the performance benefits of which are quite noticeable. However, the problem is if a huge number of messages are all delivered at once this partition can be pushed off the physical memory and into swap. When this happens the performance tanks to about 1/20th to 1/30th of normal.Is there anything I can do to keep a tempfs from being swapped to disk?
View 3 Replies View RelatedXandros isn't keeping its repostorie Apps. updated. I tried Ubuntu 9.04 and it was good with only a minor change, (wireless was slow). Got a workround from Ubuntu forum. Login as root I was able to fix it, I updated to Ubuntu 10. Wireless was slow again. I tried logging on as root. Ubuntu 10. has lockout root and sudo won't let me add (iwconfig wlan rate 54M) to a boot up program to fix it. I went back to 9.04 now it wouldn't let me sign in as root. I next tried Debian Lenny. The screen res. was 1600 x 900? And for Dabian Lenny the screen res. is set automatically and can't be set manually, so I could not finish the install. So I'm back to Xandros 4.1 needing help to keep it up to date.

I just installed pysdm so I could configure what drives mount on boot, and now when I go to access my external harddrive, this is what I get:

I am trying to get a mount in my root directory to a folder on a remote machine so that a log in is not required to access it. I seem to be having some problems with permissions though.
So far I have:
- added the machine to my /etc/hosts file
- added remotemachine:/data /auto nfs ro,soft 0 0 to my /etc/fstab
- added remotemachine:/data /auto nfs rw,soft,addr=10.112.33.4 0 0 to my /etc/mtab file
- added /hostmachinefolder mymachineip(rw) to the host /etc/exports file
However when I mount -a on my machine I get:
mount: remotemachine:/folder failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
I'm currently running a Vista machine, but would like to switch over to Linux, Ubuntu in particular. My question is can I switch over to Ubuntu, keep my Windows partition and use VirtualBox to access the pre-existing Windows partition? Or does VirtualBox require me to create a new install for Guest operating systems?
If not, are there any other free alternatives to accomplish this?
My friend just got a gaming laptop that he won't let anyone else use (his last one got infected when his girlfriend surfed on it for just one hour -- he refuses to use antivirus since he claims he knows how to keep clean, but he doesn't trust others).
Because I used Linux a bit once, I said to him what if I could promise not to make any changes to your hard drive, and I told him that I was pretty sure I could boot to a live cd and then only write files to a usb key. He's actually willing to let me try (I showed him some linux sites I was looking at, and he believes me that we can do this).
1) Is there anything I either MUST do or else must NOT do to make sure I make no changes to his laptop's hard drive? And so that any changes are only going to go on the usb drive I hook up?
2) Since he's got an i7 processor, I assume I should get a version of ubuntu that supports 64 bits, right?
I need the original (default) row starting with /dev/fd0 from the /etc/mtab file. I'm using Suse 11.1
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been writing a bunch of bash scripts to make possible non-interactive, secure, cron-based SVN checkouts with CollabNet's SVN client and GNOME Keyring Daemon (aka GKD) and one of the scripts was designed to start GKD, harvest its output, essentially a couple of environment variables, and export those variables in shell of a user the script is run as. All upon user login by sourcing a bash script in ~/.bashrc.The problem is that those environment variables will not be exported, because the script is being run in a sub-shell that exits upon it completion and environment variables get unset for good.Well, the question is how can those variables be set permanently, meaning they're exported and kept untouched even across login-logout sessions?

In the script I am using either echo or printf to print on the screen each line and then it is doing a test and produces a good or bad result.
Another example:

Each whitespace between the -- are 5 spaces. How can I get them to be in-line and formatted when it gets to more words, when THE HORSE arrives.

I just discovered that you can automount an ext4 filesystem with acl enabled by running "tune2fs -o acl". (I knew about tune2fs but did not dare to use it until now). However, the acl mount option does not show up in /etc/mtab and /proc/mounts. Can I ignore this, or is there a way of telling the system about the actual mount options?
Edit: I can do "tune2fs -l <device> | grep acl | awk '{print $4}'" and if that isn't empty I can update /etc/mtab with "mount -f -o remount,acl <device>", but like the udev rule I previously messed with this seems lumberingly unelegant to me.
I have a server running an older version of Ubuntu and with /var stored on a separate partition on a separate hard drive. I am attempting to update Ubuntu to 10.04, but I still want to store /var on a separate partition and hard drive. However, I don't want to format the drive which currently contains /var, as it has important data.
Is there some way to have 10.04 set up the new /var on this separate drive at installation, without formatting the drive and losing the old /var?
