General :: "KVM ... Consists Of A Loadable Kernel Module, Kvm.ko That Provides The Core Virtualization Infrastructure"

Feb 27, 2011

At linux-kvm.org it is stated: "KVM ... consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko that provides the core virtualization infrastructure" and yet there's no mention of Xen, which runs as the hypervisor with KVM. The site seems to be implying the module is the hypervisor. My question to you is: What is the relationship between KVM and Xen on a server that is "running KVM"?

Debian Configuration :: Building A Loadable Kernel Module?

Jul 30, 2010

I upgraded my kernel in my Debian Lenny to version 2.6.32-bpo.4-amd64 to fix a problem with a software and ALSA-related issues. The thing is that now, when I boot, eth1 is not enabled and I have to "load" (I guess) the driver each time. To do this, I go to the folder where all the files for the drivers are and I run:

modprobe lib80211
and then
insmod wl.ko

That I got from the readme file. That gets the wireless working perfectly again, but when I reboot the wireless is dead again and I have to run the commands above again. I imagine that what I should do is to build the driver again, for my new kernel. However, according to the readme file, before I need to install linux-headers-generic and build-essential. With build-essential, it says it's already the newest version, and with the linux-headers, I don't know which one should I install for my kernel! I thought it would be the linux-headers-2.6.32-bpo.4-xen-amd64, but when I tried that, this is what happened:

debian:/home/hernan/Programas/hybrid_wl# apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.32-bpo.4-xen-amd64
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

[code]....

So the warning says something about the MODULE_LICENSE being missing... how to build the driver again to make it load each time I boot?

Debian Configuration :: Kernel Driver Support: Built-in Or Loadable?

Jun 26, 2010

Is there a way to programmatically determine whether a particular driver support is built-in rather than a loadable module? I'd be grateful if somebody would share how. I have written a shell script using the RTC (real time clock). I can check whether the rtc-cmos kernel module exists and load the module accordingly as needed, but I don't know how to determine when the driver is built-in. Of course, if the driver is built-in then the module does not exist.

I seem to recall there is a method to query the kernel config file (/proc/config.gz), through which I probably could grep for the CONFIG_RTC_DRV_CMOS parameter. I also can check whether /proc/driver/rtc exists. If that file exists then either the driver is built-in or the module was loaded.I realize the rtc-cmos driver is built-in with the standard Debian kernel build, but I still would like a way to query where the driver is supported.Is there a straightforward or direct method to query the kernel whether a particular driver is built-in?

Debian Configuration :: Kernel For Virtualization ?

Apr 12, 2010

I was wondering if anyone can assist me. I am looking to build a server with Debian as the host. When I installed Debian (Squeeze) the default kernel was "2.6.32-3-trunk-amd64". When I tried to install 'Virtualbox' application, I got a failure because I didn't have the 'kernel-headers' installed on my machine. I noticed there are no specific header package the 'trunk' kernel I was using. I have a few questions so I guess I should begin:

Is it safe to remove the 'trunk' kernel and boot my system on just the regular 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel? Is this OK or not recommended? Please explain whatever is the correct answer. This is my 1st time using a 'Trunk' kernel so I don't know the in's and out's of it.

If I am using Debian 'Testing' for virtualization via 'Vbox', is there a specific kernel I "should" be using?

CentOS 5 :: Virtualization: Dual Boot Xen And Ordinary Kernel?

Sep 1, 2010

If you select "support virtualization" during install, you get the xen kernel installed.

Some things do not work with this kernel (e.g. nVidia drivers). So my question is whether it is possible to install both kernels (xen and ordinary) and select between them with grub at boot time?

I did try this a while ago, by first installing with xen and then manualy adding the ordinary kernel, but the ordinary kernel failed to boot (for reasons I don't now recall - sorry). Clearly, there must be differences in the "virtualization" build other than the kernel.

The alternative, if I want to play with virtualization, would be to have two entirely separate installations, but this seems like a waste of space when surely almost everything must be identical?

I can't find anything in the Centos Xen documentation about this.

Before I try again I would just like to check if anyone actually knows if this is possible, or if not why not?

Or can it be done with KVM?

Fedora :: Xen Virtualization With Fedora Core 14

Dec 15, 2010

I have been spending many days trying to figure out if is possible to implement para-virtualization with Xen on my Fedora Cora 14 with the following kernel and architecture 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64.I have read many documents that made me crazy at all, and finally they don't have many sense for me, probably because my english is very poor and many times I am not able to understand the meaning of those.It's so frustrating for me.Summarizing, what I want to do or to know is if is possible to run Xen dom0 kernel on my machine and then running some guest or domU over it.I've already known that there are not xen-dom0 kernel packages like in older Fedora versions (for instance Fedora 9) what makes things easier. I want to know if I would have to built my own kernel from kernel source repositories and how?, because tried it before and It didn't work probably cause there was something wrong in my building.I'm very willing to provide you as many information as you want or need to solve this unbeatable situation.

I compiled the kernel with option: make oldconfig where it asked me for various interactive options and all I did is Kept pressing the Enter ENTER key(Donno if that is the correct way to slect default ).The Kernel Compilation anyway went fine and I can see new kernel at grub screen, booted and it went fine.Now when I explored I found that nor the vmware_balloon and vmw_pvscsi modules are present which means I need to install these modules.I came to know that recently a new version of the vmware memory drivers being included through this page:

[URL]

where you can see an entry like:

Code:

MODULE_AUTHOR("VMware, Inc.");
MODULE_DESCRIPTION("VMware Memory Control (Balloon) Driver");
-MODULE_VERSION("1.2.1.0-K");
+MODULE_VERSION("1.2.1.1-k");

Doesn't it mean that the new kernel has new driver version inboxed?Also, I tried to install modules through modprobe and insmod(seems that this doesnt work) but couldnt do that.

General :: How To Load A Kernel 2.6 Module With F Force Option?

Jan 21, 2010

I have a loadable module, simple enough I believe it should run on any 2.6 kernel. I want to force the load and test that assumption. How can I do it?

ismod does not seem to notice the -f in 2.7 modprobe has -f but cannot locate the module.No go. So I read the manpage for modprobe which says: modprobe looks in the module directory /lib/modules/'uname -r'.So I copied MYMODULE.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.(the only directory in here) and type: modprobe -f MYMODULE.ko.Still can't locate MYMODULE.ko.I notice there are no other .ko modules in that directory; so I go in deeper to kernel/drivers/char, guessing about the char directory, and copy MYMODULE.ko there.

General :: Writing A Kernel Module And Make Concepts

Mar 13, 2011

i have written some really basic loadable kernel modules. There are a couple of concepts that i'll like to get cleared.

In a tutorial, the Makefile was given as follows-
obj-m += try.o
all:
make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(PWD) modules
clean:
make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(PWD) clean

I understand that -C option of 'make' changes the current directory to /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build (which depends on my kernel).

Now, my question is why to change to that particular directory? Also M=$(PWD) will hold the dir where i have written the module. Why is it required? What does 'modules' at the end of that line indicate?

Q2> We need to include <linux/module.h> and <linux/kernel.h> in a module. If i am right, the module uses kernel headers for these definitions. But how does 'make' find these definitions.

Q3> We are planning to write a custom scheduler for linux kernel. cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler gives us the currently loaded schedulers. How do we expose our scheduler to linux kernel so that we can use it by switching to it.
