General :: Installing A Getty On /dev/hvc0
Aug 22, 2010
I am trying to use Lguest(hypervisor of linux kernel) of the first time, on ubuntu 10.04 with kernel version 2.6.32.33. One of the instructions of the running operations is: "Make sure that you install a getty on /dev/hvc0 if you want to log in on the console!". How do I install a getty? By the way, /dev/hvc0 is not present in my system, do I need to create it?

I try to setup a small Debian system running on command line. Remote access shall be possible via ssh (for now also telnet) and a serial connected minicom via getty. I need the serial access as fallback in case the network is down.
As long as the package adduser is not installed, I can login as root via telnet and getty without problem. But from the moment "adduser" is installed with apt-get, the serial root login always fails after entering the right password with the message "Login incorrect". Even de-installing "adduser", or using a brand new "adduser test" user. When installing and using SSH it allows to login successfully, like telnet.
BTW: A dangerous behavior I observed with telnet: When I opening the connection via telnet, I'm immediately logged in as root - without asking for a password! I set a password with passwd which also is requested by SSH and getty (before the adduser installation) but not by telnet?!?!?
The /var/log/messages adds a line if login with su, but nothing when fails with getty
Here is my inittab:
Code:
# /etc/inittab: init(8) configuration.
# inittab,v 1.1 2006-07-27 08:58:03 lothar Exp
# The default runlevel.
id:2:initdefault:

How to change the console login prompt settings in slackware 13.1 x64? I tried googling but couldnt find anything, maybe I dont know what it's called.. I mean when the system boot and boots into console asking login info, how to reset the console to new page/clear screen(clearing all the boot up info lines) before it prompts to login. Like for example if after logged into a tty I type exit, I want the screen to refresh(reset?) such that all screen info is cleared and only login prompt is shown on the top left of the screen, like in fedora shell prompt.

I had previously partitioned my harddrive and installed Linux on one part of it. I had a few problems and didn't like the way Grub stayed when I removed Linux. Here's what I have now: I reformatted and have Windoh's XP on C drive with 70GB. I made a D drive with 70 GB.I want to install Linux on the D drive (I think...unless I shouldn't do that.) How will I access Linux if I do this? Will my computer boot into Windoh's by default as usual? Will I double-click on "My Computer" then choose The D drive with Linux installed on it? I don't want to have to go through removing the Grub thing as I had to do last time I removed Linux. My ideal thing would be to be able to double-click on D drive and run Linux without having re-start problems with my computer.I'm sorry if this makes no sense. I don't really know how to explain it.

I am trying to install software in the software directory which by default belongs to the user:group root:root.
Lets I create a user called user1 belonging to group group1.
And I create a directory called install1 under /opt
So from /opt, I do:
chown -R user1:user1 install1
Now install1 directory belongs to user user1 and group1.
Question is that in the full path /opt/install1, the parent directory belongs to root:root whereas the child directory (install1) belongs to user1:user1. Now when I install software as user1 and give that Path to install as /opt/user1/blah1 , is that ok?
Just wondering because /opt is root:root

I just downloaded Ubuntu remix Netbook edition 10.10. during the installation i wasnt paying attention and I downloaded the 32 bit version... The thing is the Unity interface is not showing up, and perhaps its becuase of this 32 bit thing. Anyway I would like to install the 64 bit version, not . Ive read around that the best way is to uninstall everything from windows (its dual boot) and re install. The problem is I dont have a windows xp start up cd, so that wouldnt work, or would be complicated.
However somewhere I read I could install over it, and I would like your thoughts. First off how would that work?? Ive learned my lesson not to play with the OS... to how to delete Ubuntu, without a Windows xp CD. To make it harder I dont know anything of computers so yay!

so my new job had me install Linux on a laptop at work, the laptop will be handed off to multiple users, 3 total (for now) The HDD is about 320gb, I believe. First, they just said "Install your flavor of linux", so I installed ubuntu 10.4. Then he said "Make sure you split it into 3 partitions, all boot-able...
fml. So I suck at managing partitions, I took up 100% of sda1. HTF do I split that up, without losing all of my data? My guess is I would need to boot in from a bootable DVD, unmound sda1, then..Im googling it now, but id love to go into work and already know what to do, lol

I have installed Windows XP Professional on the main drive. It runs but too slow. I want to wipe/delete the partition and format the hard drive(s) and install a light version of Linux. The computer will be used only for internet and email and light word processing.

I'm trying to instal RH 5 64 on an IBM x346. In the BIOS I enabled host raid (could not see disks if disabled) and setup a RAID-1 (mirror) 2 HD's. I have then proceeded to install RH 5 (using the GUI) on to the mirror which appears to have installed fine. When I reboot the system is seems to boot to the OS but the screen is black with a few thin white lines appearing on the screen. I thought this may be related to the on-board graphics soo I installed it again on another x346 (except this one had more memory). Upon rebooting this post install I am presented with the Error booting OS.

Install process gets all the way through to the point where it's copying files from CD to hdd. As soon as it gets to 100% my screen goes blank and it freezes up like that. The monitor then goes into standby mode, like it normally does when not connected to the computer (the green LED turns to orange). There is no command line or anything, I have to press reset button at this point. I can run live from the CD though.
Tried the Check Install Media feature and it gives a readout that md5sum is ok
md5: 62210a3034990b44bad86e8d2d69a271 **I have absolutely no clue on how to do this md5sum stuff, especially in Windows XP, so I just skip doing it and go right to burning CD/DVD**
Media is OpenSUSE 11.4 KDE liveCD on a Memorex CD-R 52x, burned at 8x (lowest I was able to go)
Hardware is: Pentium 4 with HT @2.8GHz, 1.5GB DDR, GeForce 6200 graphics (AGP)
Running Window XP Pro on main hdd
Should I figure a bad burn or something related to the CD-R I burned? In which case easy fix is to just download the DVD version and burn that (should have been my first choice I know). Or possibly an incorrect setting in BIOS? There is an option for OS/2 or Non OS/2, maybe its set wrong? I believe its currently set for Non OS/2 which was the default.
**The system I'm installing to is listed in my signature, which lists all the hardware I'm using.**
