Ubuntu Servers :: 4TB Raid Partition For Server ?

Sep 1, 2011

Quote:

EFI GUID Partition support works on both 32bit and 64bit platforms. You must include GPT support in kernel in order to use GPT. If you don't include GPT support in Linux kernel, after rebooting the server, the file system will no longer be mountable or the GPT table will get corrupted. By default Redhat Enterprise Linux / CentOS comes with GPT kernel support. However, *******if you are using Debian or Ubuntu Linux,******** you need to recompile the kernel. Set CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION to y to compile this feature.

Is this true? Ubuntu has no GPT support native to the server install? Never compiled a kernel. Is that of itself going to be a mind bender? How much doo doo am I going to get into if I haven't done it a few times? Trust me when I tell you its no thrill formatting and reformatting a 8tb raid drive or the individual disks if it screws up. Been on that ride way too long already. Need things to go smoothly. This is not a play toy server, but will be used in a business.

Server :: RAID 1 Partition Devices Disappear After Upgrade

Mar 3, 2011

I found a workaround of sorts. It looks like this is related to a 9.04 bug [URL] and the loopback workaround brings back the array. It is not clear how I will handle this long term.

Note: before using this technique, I used gparted to tag the partitions as "raid". They disappeared again on reboot, so I had to do it again. I am not sure how this is going to work out long-term

Note: I suspect some of this is related to the embedded "HOMEHOST" that is written into the RAID metadata on the paritions. The server was misnamed when first built and the name was changed later (cerebus -> cerberus) and the old name has surfaced in the name of a phanton device reported by gparted - /dev/mapper/jmicron_cerebus_root

I have a mythbuntu 9.10 system that I have upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 in the last 2 days. I am on my way to 10.x, but need to make sure it works after every step.

The basic problem is that in its current incarnation, it is not recognizing the underlying partitions for one of the RAID devices, and therefore not happy.

As a 8.10 system I had 2 raid devices:

/dev/md16 -> /dev/sda5 and /dev/sdb5
/dev/md21 -> /dev/sdc1 and /dev/sdd1
/etc/fstab looked like this (in part):
/dev/md16 /var/lib xfs defaults 0 2

[Code]....

I don't *really* want to repartition the drive as there is a small amount of data loss between recent backups and what is on the drive, plus it would take me 2 days to move the data back.

Software :: Resizing NTFS Partition On Server (RAID Controller)

Nov 3, 2010

I'm trying to resize an NTFS partition on an IBM MT7977 Server. It has a Adaptec AIC-9580W RAID controller. I was thinking about doing it with a gparted LiveCD/LiveUSB, but then I realised that they won't have drivers for the RAID controller. A quick google for "9580W Linux" doesn't return anything promising.

General :: RAID At Root Partition In Debian ?

Feb 11, 2010

The RAID level 1 interested me because of its redundancy in both drives. And I successfully made it in a couple of partitions. But, I always did it after Linux installation. Then, I create both partitions, use 'mdadm' to create raidtab and RAID device (md0, for example) and then I format the RAID device with 'mkfs' and mount it.

Until there, it's all OK.

But my problem is to mirror ALL the hard disk, inclusive root partition. To do that, I guess I need no Linux installation, then create the RAID (md0, raidtab, etc) and after that install Linux in RAID device created.

But I'm new in Linux world and I have no idea how to do that.

I use Debian Lenny, so I need a solution that uses only the first DVD of this distribution.

General :: Removing The RAID From An EXT2 Partition?

Aug 11, 2009

This might be a longshot but i used to use the 4 bay NAS here Which formated the HDD JBOD array to EXT2 , Anyway i want to move to an 8 bay DAS now but i cant find an application to convert the partitions .

Partition magic says the partitions are unformatted and the partition id is set to linux raid auto . Is there any way to convert this partition to vanilla EXT2 so i can use partition magic on it ? Its a 4TB array so copying isnt possible.

Background: The HD comes from a linux based NAS box Synology DS207+. The NAS uses ext3 as filesystem. Both NAS disks are fine, but the other NAS hardware is dead and not worth repairing or replacing.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Connect A RAID Box To The Server Via LSI 8880EM2 RAID Controller

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller. The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured. The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card. The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.

The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).

I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.

Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

General :: Setting Up Raid Server?

Apr 29, 2011

I just built a home computer with 3TB hard drives I wanted to set up in a RAID 5 and load Ubuntu server onto it. The first thing I did was set up the drives in a RAID 5 using just the motherboard chipset software to do it, so a 'hardware' RAID basically. I installed Windows first to see if all the hardware works ok (that seemed the easiest way to verify it) and with the exception of the ethernet card (which needed a driver disk to work) everything was plug n' play and worked wonderfully. After that I booted the Windows install disk again to delete the partitions, hoping Ubuntu 10.10 server would create its own.

The problem I'm having is no matter what I've tried (deleting and recreating the RAID 5 setup, departitioning the drives), whenever I try to install Ubuntu it won't recognize the RAID as a valid disk. Ironically, it did at first, because I installed windows to verify the hardware. The ethernet card wasn't working automatically in the Ubuntu setup, (although it found the unformatted RAID drive), so I installed windows and figured out it was just the drivers that needed to be installed.

So now when I try to install Ubuntu, it finds the ethernet card perfectly and connects to the internet during the installation...but that actually stinks because it's telling me it's still accessing the drivers from the drives that I thought I formatted. Once it gets to the storage part of the installation afterwards, it can't find the RAID drive anymore. I tells me to choose a disk from the list, but the list is blank. So I can't install on it.

If I remove the RAID entirely and just keep the drives as 3 separate IDE drives, it finds every drive perfectly and can install to either one I choose. But I don't want this, I definitely need them RAIDed.

General :: Raid - Recover Software RAID5 Array After Server Upgrade?

Jun 7, 2011

I recently upgraded a server from Fedora 6 to Fedora 14. In addition to the main hard drive where the OS is installed, I have 3 1TB hard drives configured for RAID5 (via software). After the upgrade, I noticed one of the hard drives had been removed from the raid array. I tried to add it back with mdadm --add, but it just put it in as a spare. I figured I'd get back to it later. Then, when performing a reboot, the system could not mount the raid array at all. I removed it from the fstab so I could boot the system, and now I'm trying to get the raid array back up.

I ran the following:mdadm --create /dev/md0 --assume-clean --level=5 --chunk=64 --raid-devices=3 missing /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1I know my chunk size is 64k, and "missing" is for the drive that got kicked out of the array (/dev/sdb1).That seemed to work, and mdadm reports that the array is running "clean, degraded" with the missing drive. However, I can't mount the raid array. When I try:mount -t ext3 /dev/md0 /mnt/fooI get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-5 Recovery (spare/active) / Degraded And Can't Create Raid ,auto Stop Raid [md1]?

Feb 1, 2011

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.

Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:

mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]

I was able to examine the disks though:

Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....

Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

Ubuntu :: Any Way To Recreate LVM RAID 1 Partition?

Sep 6, 2010

How do I recreate an LVM raid 1 partition, without destroying data on the discs? I have a 650GB data partition which is a raid 1 array with ext3. Two days ago, the system (Ubuntu 9.04) started to refuse to write to it, claiming no space left on device - even if there is ca. 102GB free left, if the disk is 85% full (according to df)! Interestingly, removing a couple of GB did not help, after reboot the disk was again full..

I did the "tune2fs -m 0" trick and then forced file check on next reboot by "sudo touch /forcefsck" .. and the result is that the raid partition is gone. I have the two physical drives /dev/sd*, unmounted, but the /dev/md1 is no longer there. What can I do to re-create it, without losing the data? I realized that I ran tune2fs on the physical partitions /dev/sd* - was I supposed to run it on /dev/md1?

Ubuntu Servers :: How Do You Enlarge Raid 6 Partition

May 13, 2011

I am trying to grow my array to make full use of my drives. I have a raid 6 using mdadm on my home server. The array used to consist of 6 1.5TB drives when it was created. Since then I've been replacing the 1.5TB drives with new 2TB drives. And now I have replaced the last 2 drives.

When I added the first 3 disks I did not use the whole disk for the raid partition but rather made it the same size as the 1.5 partitions. As it turns out this may have been a bad idea. (But it gave me another 3 partitions of 500GB that I turned into 1 disk using mhddfs.)

Now I'm trying to grow the array. I've been testing in a virtual enviroment on how to do it but I cannot find another method than this :

1) fail 1 disk.
2) re-partition the disk with the size of the whole disk.
3) re-add the drive as a spare.
4) start the now degraded array to let it resync.
5) wait quite a while. (aprox 5 hours)
6) start again from step 1 for the other disks.
7) use mdadm with grow command to enlarge the array
use resize2fs to fill array to max size

Now although since this is a raid 6, I keep some redundancy but I still worry about degrading the array so manny times and rebuilding the whole thing. I mean I read the thing out 3 or 4 times over doing this.
