I Install the Windows vista on first partition and then i try to install the Fedora 10 on Second partition of 15 GB. when I do custom Layout partition. Make 4 GB partition for Swap and Try to create Root partition getting the Error Could not allocate requested partitions: Partitioning Failed: Could not allocate partitions. Not enough space left to create partition for None.
Please help me To create the partition I have to select the primary partition on the box or What size need to select as well like Full Size or Fixed Size or Specfic size. Need to click Encrypt Keep or what.?
If i created two partition only one is Root / and another one is Swap partition only it will work or not Please guide me to resolve this error. If i create the root paritition and then swap paritition getting the error, this 15GB paritition is spare free partition on hard drive not created in Windows Vista Just want to created in Fedora 10. I am sitting in front of an Ubuntu which was installed previously by someone else. How can I find out if a swap partition was defined? Is it always a swap partition or only a (ONE) swap file (like in Windows XP) ?If there is currently no swap partition: How can I create one and tell Ubuntu to use it?How can I conversely tell Ubuntu NOT to use a separate swap partition but to use

I was fortunate enough to acquire some old 2u server hardware (from 2005) on which I wanted to learn how to use Ubuntu. Ubuntu fails to mount any partition, in fact gparted cannot detect anything. The installer detects the scsi hdds but then fails when it tries to actually make a partition. I've searched this forum, linuxquestions and google. Nothing relevant was found and the solutions involving probing with commands within linux were irrelevant since zero partitions show.
I've tried Ubuntu 10.4, but settled on trying to install 8.10 since it seems to boot up faster and at least detects the physical hard drives quicker. Also tried windows xp and that says "no hard disk detected". I would've tried windows 7 but the server doesn't have a dvd drive.

(This is for a 100% Clean install)
Q1) I was wondering if it is possible to Dual boot Ubuntu with Windows XP on a 1TB RAID-0 setup ?
Q2) Also, is it possible to create a SWAP partition (for Ubuntu) on a NON RAID-0 HDD ?
Q3) Lastly... I read GRUB2 is the default boot manager... should I use that, or GRUB / Lio ?
I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup
-- 1x 320GB WDD HDD (non RAID setup)
(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?
I plan on installing XP before Ubuntu.
This is my 1st time dual booting XP with Ubuntu.
I'm using these as my resources:
- [url]
- [url]
Q5) Anything else I should be aware of (possible issues during install)?
Q6) Lastly... is there anything like the AHCI (advanced host controller interface) like in Windows for Ubuntu?
(Since I need a special floppy during Windows Install...) I want to be able to use the Advanced Queuing capabilities of my SATA drives in Ubuntu.

RAM for older machines like I use is fairly cheap these days. But flash memory is just as cheap or cheaper. So I'd like to ask about the feasibility of expanding my system's memory using flash memory. And about whether creating a partition for swap on the flash memory, or whether a swap file on the flash device, is the better way to go.
By flash memory I have in mind mainly USB sticks or what are sometimes called "pen drives." But I do also have CF and SD cards that, with the proper cheap adapter (one of which I already own for adapting CF) could be used to create extra swap space. So, what is the current consensus on the feasibility/advisability of using flash memory for swap? I've read about the limited write cycles of flash being an argument against using it for swap. But recent reading indicates to me that the limited write cycles problem applies mostly to older, smaller-capacity flash memory. Some will come out and say that, for larger-capacity flash memory, the life of the device is likely to exceed the amount of time your current computer will be useful (I think I've seen estimates in the range of 3-4 years life--minimum--for newer, higher-capacity flash memory).
A more persuasive argument I've heard against using flash memory for swap is that access times for these devices can be much slower than SATA, and maybe even IDE, hard drives. That would certainly dictate against using flash memory for swap.
So, how about some input on this issue? Anyone using flash memory for swap? If so, what kind (e.g., usb stick or SD/CF)? Are you using a swap file or a swap partition? How's system performance? Likewise, has anyone had flash-memory-used-as-swap die on them? The consequences would undoubtedly be dire. Also, has anyone measured flash memory access times to confirm or refute claims about slow access times? Are some types of flash memory better/worse than others in terms of access times?

I was wondering if that is possible with proftpd. if not, can someone suggest how to create a script that will simply create a DIR with date and autorun itself every 24 hours? i am running Debian/Proftpd with Mysql authorization.

I've an 8GB swap (I know, overkill, but I don't have space issues, and I'd rather have too much instead of too less). The problem is that my physical memory fills up, and the system crashes, but swap usage is ALWAYS 0%
Mem: 8060580k total, 5193436k used, 2867144k free, 1013788k buffers
Swap: 8388604k total, 0k used, 8388604k free, 2262112k cached
Setting aside the fact that I can't trace why memory usage goes up to 8GB with just firefox/terminals/pidgin, why isn't my swap EVER used?
Also, if I run
Code:
# top
2301 hugo 20 0 1887m 665m 38m S 19.9 8.5 267:38.63 firefox-bin
1811 root 20 0 166m 67m 10m S 10.8 0.9 128:04.59 X
1973 hugo 20 0 306m 78m 16m S 0.8 1.0 42:30.04 compiz
2024 hugo 20 0 487m 13m 8836 S 0.2 0.2 2:14.73 Terminal
1980 hugo 20 0 333m 7228 5492 S 0.1 0.1 0:54.49 lxpanel
7048 hugo 20 0 15016 1168 820 R 0.1 0.0 0:00.03 top
(The rest are all "0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0")
If add up all of the RES columns, I get <1GB. If I add all the VIRT column, I get about 3GB. Where's the other 2GB being used? This goes up all the way to 8GB, without being able to add up where my memory's going.

I have the swap partition configured normally in fstab but it doesn't automount when I boot up. Not only that but I can't manually mount it either (ie with 'swapon -a', 'swapon -L /dev/sda7' etc). When I try I get this error -
Code:
[spoovy@kermitfed ~]$ sudo swapon -a
swapon: /dev/sda7: read swap header failed: Invalid argument
fstab -
Code:
/dev/sda7 swap swap defaults 0 0
The swap partition is used by another installation (Ubuntu dual-boot), which mounts it fine each boot.

why the operating system is not using swap.I am using Fedora Core 13, it did have 4GB of ram, all of the ram was used. performance was poor. I used free and top to check if it was swapping - according to both, swap was NOT used at all. Never the less, I upgraded to 8GB and performance improved a lot. However, once again, free and top state that ALL the ram is utilised, yet NONE of the swap is utilised.

fc10 86_64Every time I login and do not run any programs, the swap space used goes from 300 MB to 6GB. Memory stays at about 320 MB (out of 4 GB). I takes several minutes to fill the swap space, and when it gets full, it then goes back to 300 MB. Then the system runs ok.The system monitor shows no processes (other than itself) running, but cpu usage is about 20% on 1 of the 2 cpus
