General :: How To Bypass FSCK At Reboot
Jul 23, 2010
I have a server that said a volume was dirty and to check it at reboot, so someone did a shutdown -rF now. Only problem is the other volumes are HUGE and it will take forever, which I cant have happen. The volume with the trouble is non-critical so I could take it offline and check it that way if i can get this to boot quickly. How can I do that if its going to auto check every volume on reboot now?

I tried a remote reboot via ssh. I couldn't log back in even though sshd is a startup script, because the KDE daemon wanted me to enter my kwallet password...which is of course part of the DE, not something accessible via ssh. How do I turn off that check or automate it?

I know I can force a fsck run at next reboot using
Code:
shutdown -rF now
or
Code:
touch /forcefsck
can I force the fsck to more indepth checks such as doing directory optimisations, bad blocks checks, etc. maybe by passing parameters to the fsck call during startup?

I am running 9.04 Server (standalone). It had been running fine since I installed in last autumn. Upon reboot, fsck of the root filesystem was forced and it hangs at the same point (16.5%) every time. I was able to break out somehow with cntl-alt-del but the boot was to a read-only filesystem. So I couldn't disable the forced fsck. Instead, I tried to fsck there. It started, but hung. I couldn't do e2fsck -v as it needed the device and, although I worked on UNIX systems for decades, I am not familiar with the /dev/mapper stuff.
Looking at other threads, all involving the desktop GUI Ubuntu, I tried some of the suggestions. Went into the BIOS to see what I could disable. I killed the serial port and similar. (Some said that onboard modems interfered with the checks in /dev.) I also tried to boot from my original installation disk. That does work. The suggestion is to choose "Try without any change to your computer". The problem is that is not available on the server installation, apparently only the desktop (GUI). I had install, check CD for defects, test memory, boot from first hard disk, and something like repair or recover a broken disk. I started the last of them, as it seemed to be the only option. It failed because it couldn't get a dhcp address. I could manually configure it (as it is hard addressed anyway), but I didn't want to start screwing up configurations not knowing where it was going, whayt it would ry to do, and risk losing months of hard work.
Without help, I think I will be forced to install the OS on a second drive, use that install to fsck the original filesystem on the original disk, edit the fstab (or whichever has the config) on the original disk to disable fsck, and return to the original boot.I am building this server for a nonprofit and have put in many hours writing mysql/perl apache cgi code for them as a free service and hate to lose it all and set back everything.

16GB RAI've been running the Debian-based Proxmox VE on it for six months or so with no problems.Today I loaded Centos 5.5 x64. During a reboot, the file system crashed and fsck couldn't repair.I loaded it again, did all the updates, and loaded my applications. On about the third reboot, it crashed again and fsck couldn't fix it.I don't really know where to begin. I doubt seriously that any hardware has went bad since yesterday.

When I do a forced fsck, I would like to have a log file to look at after boot.
When I check /var/log/ there are no files there with fsck output
I've run force fsck in these ways:
shutdown -rF now
-and-
touch /forcefsck

I would like to setup a compose key, but the only options available in the KDE system settings (and via /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules) are code...
None of those please me though; "compose:caps" might be ok, but it's mapped to ctrl already.
Is there an option so setup some key (e.g. some of those extra function keys), or to get the key itself somehow? (e.g. ralt would be OK, if I could easily get the original behavior of the key (AltGr))
I would love to have something like Shift-AltGr to trigger Compose mode.
I guess I could add an extra rule, like it's done for/with compose:102.. what does 102 refer to? (it's not something dumped via xev).
There is also an option lv3:ralt_switch_multikey (Right Alt, Shift+Right Alt key is Multi_Key), but this did not work as expected (see http://bugs.kde.org/246472).

There are some user-space based NFS clients (e.g. NFS Client library). Can I bypass file permissions by using such client? code...
Client1 uses usual NFS client (kernel-mode based) and user1@client1 can read only file1, but not file2.
As I understand, client1 sends uid in nfs request, server1 do a permissions check based on the request data. So, I suggest this is possible to have a client2:
Client2 uses user-space client, and hacker@client2 knows uids of user1 and user2; If he wants to read file1 he can send uid of user1; if he wants to read file2, he sends uid of user2.
Is the scheme possible?

Today I did an update on my Debian 6.0.0 installation, which included a kernel update. I also did an Nvidia driver update, afterward. All well, until upon a third boot up an fsck check was forced (34 mounts). Some odd behavior ensued. At about 19% it exited the check, printed what appeared to be a load of inode numbers with error messages, and "froze" with the caps lock and num lock lights on the keyboard flashing.I did a couple of grub recovery modes, each which advanced a little further, and all is well again. However, it concerned me. Where in var/log do I find the file of that particular fsck activity?

RHEL 5.4. I'm facing the following error after rebooting the server:
/dev/VolGroup01/u04: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY Run fsck Manually"
*** An error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell: the system wil reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
give the root password for maintenance:
-Previously I performed a lvreduce command on a LV, after the lvreduce, I reboot the server.
-After login as root I run:
e2fsck -f /dev/VolGroup01/u04
But, it shows:
The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 5218304 blocks
The physical size of the device is 1310720 blocks ...
either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt
abort<y>? no
pass 1: cheking inodes, blocks, and sizes
error reading block 1310722 (invalid argument) while doing inode scan
inore error <y>? y
-Additionally, trying to lvdisplay, it shows:
Locking type -1 initialization failed
I have no important data on that LV, but I can not boot the server properly.

I want the filesystem of my external drive to be checked periodically after a numer of mounts. I put 2 in the sixth colums of fstab for this partition
Code:
/dev/sdb1/mnt/hdext3rw,dev,sync,user,noauto,exec,suid02
and I use the tune2fs to set the maximum mount count to 32.
Code:
tune2fs -c 32 /dev/sdb
now the mount count is 34 and the date of the last check is not recent, so apparently the auto fsck has not been performed. Probably because this partition is not mounted at start-up but I usually mount it manually.

I have a server with Debian on it that I regularly reboot after upgrades. Sometimes (on schedule) fsck will check a disk when the computer is booting. With the exception of sitting in front of the console to observe the fsck, how can I determine the difference between a problematic halt and an fsck (besides waiting out the fsck, hoping it is an fsck)? When I send the computer down to reboot, I will usually have a terminal window open pinging the computer so I know when it has come back up. My first thoughts drifted to fantasizing about hacking fsck to respond to pings with some special magic byte so you could tell via ping that a computer was fsck-ing, but I'm thinking there have got to be easier ways..

I have two ext3 lv's of 4GB and 10GB in my hda8 partition, and they are automounted by /dev/mapper/ in my /etc/mtab files in each of the four distros (Suse9.3, OpenSuse10.2, kubuntu7.04 and Debian Lenny 5.0.3). Since ext3 is a journalled fs I feel I ought to fsck their integrity every 3 months or so, however I don't know
a) whether they must be unmounted before running fsck,
b) whether I should use a live CD such as knoppix to run the fsck command, and
c) whether I can and/or should run fsck /dev/hda8, or whether I should somehow fsck each lv seperately?

Fstab has at the end some values: 0 1 for / or 0 2 for /home or others.
It is nice to set tune2fs -c 2 for disks that have to be reliable and increase the security of the data.
tune2fs is not working for JFS. How to make this check at every single boot of the Debian/ubuntu machine?

I have pc/os linux 2009 installed and I recently got the following message while trying to boot up my system:
*checking root file system...fsck 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009) dev/sda1 contains a file system with errors, check forced. /dev/sda1:Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found. /dev/sda1:Unexpected inconsistency;run fsck manually. (i.e., without -a or -p options) fsck died with exit status 4
*An automatic file system check (fsck) of the root filesystem failed. A manual fsck must be performed, then the system restarted. The fsck should be performed in maintenance mode with the root filesystem mounted in read-only mode.
*The root filesystem is currently mounted in read-only mode. A maintenance shell will now be started. after performing system maintenance press Control-D to terminate the maintenance shell and restart the system.
Give root password for maintenance:
The problem is, when I enter my password I get an incorrect password prompt. How can I change my password so that a manual fsck can start? Why did this message error message appear in the first place?
