How to create a cron file that will regularly perform the following backups:
a. Performs a level 0 backup once per month
b. Performs a level 2 dump one day per week
c. Performs a level 5 dump every day that neither a level 0 nor a level 2 dump is performed.
In the worst case, how many restores would you have to perform to recover a file that was dumped using this schedule.
answer this question? How to create a cron file that will regularly perform the following backups:a. This is homework, so I don't want a direct answer
I have a samba file server that has Windows XP machines connecting to it. Fairly regularly, I get messages such as the following. Are these anything to worry about? What do they mean? Nobody ever has problems with disconnecting or losing their mapped drive or their desktop shortcut not working.
Code: Nov 15 15:37:21 servername smbd[27516]: [2010/11/15 15:37:21, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(384) Nov 15 15:37:21 servername smbd[27516]: read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. Error = No route to host
I have added some executable scripts to /etc/cron.daily but don't get the stdout/stderr output from them as mail (or anywhere else I have found). At least one of them is running (because I can see that it has added a file to the disk).
The peculiar thing is that I do get the output from /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch (part of the logwatch package) as an email each day.
The MAILTO line in /etc/crontab is "MAILTO=root" (unchanged from default). Same for /etc/anacrontab.
I do have an alias at the end of /etc/aliases which redirects root's mail to my own account, but this alias works fine for mail I send manually. (It also appears to work fine for the output from the file /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.)
I put in my cron entries to run my backup script which rsyncs my data to my 2nd drive, however on a hunch I checked my backup drive which mounts automatically via fstab and I realize it had not ran in a while. I checked cron and there were no entries for it. I got to wondering if I should ever be worried about a cron update coming down and over-writing my existing cron file with the backup entries in it to run.
Background you can skip: I have an old Dell laptop, an Inspiron 2650, which I use primarily as an internet terminal at home. I have switched back and forth between XP and different Ubuntu releases, and Lubuntu is what I am running with now. At some point I upgraded and the hardware support for my laptop broke. I have done multiple clean installs, and using any 10.04 Ubuntu distribution I have to disable ACPI in the Grub settings, or else my mouse and kb will not work. So...
Question: Since the OS shutdown feature can't turn off the laptop power with ACPI disabled, I often hit the laptop power button and skip the shutdown process entirely. Most of the time I am only running Chrome, so I am not worried about losing or corrupting local data. Is there any valid reason why this would be a problem? Does the shutdown process do anything important enough to justify the hassle?
i installed ubuntu 10.10 remix netbook edition on hp mini 110 last day. my wifi is working fine its connecting every network only problem is it cant keep its connection constant, i mean it keep disconnecting frequently. once it disconnect i tried to connect again but it connects but i can not surf internet.
I've been a very happy user of Debian Squeeze (gnome) for a few months already.
Everything works great, but I am encountering an annoying, and regular problem: almost every time I update my system (through synaptic) and reboot, my desktop theme gets reset to the more "blocky" default gnome one.
What I do is run "gnome-settings-daemon," either as normal or super user, reboot, and get back my chosen original theme.
i want backup from my system fdora11 64bit .at that i worked on this command, rsync -avz soursepath /media/destination path but it is not working correctly
On an OpenSuse 10.3 64-bit system I have installed an HP P2055dn printer. However, quite regularly the printer seems to have *vanished* from the system. It is still accessible through the network, but all settings have been lost when I turn on the system.
The printer has been set up using YaST with Direct TCP printing, using the Laserjet Series PCL6 driver. I've had the same setup on 3 different systems and each of them has had this problem occasionally, but this particular system has now had this same problem 3 or 4 times in two weeks.
Setting the printer up again is OC not much work, it's more a nuisance that I have to reconfigure it again and again and again.
why my printer settings are thrown out at random and what I can do to prevent it?
I have just upgraded from OpenSUSE 11.3 to 11.4, and now regularly about every 15 minutes my monitor display goes blank for a split second. My video chip is NVIDIA GeForce 6100.
I regularly need to copy files from a remote computer to wherever I am working. I've ben looking into alias and the .bashrc (or .profile in the remote computer - mac) Can I use scp in these files? I've tried:
Code: alias='sch usr@location:' then when in the local terminal:
Code: sch path/file . But this doesn't work.
Better would be copying when logged into the remote location, but I haven't figured that out in terminal yet, let alone an alias for it. Hopefully it'll be a quick solution!
Since I upgraded from 9.10 UNR to lucid I am getting this problem regularly, every time a window is closed. See the two attached screenshots, one shows everything working, the second shows an instant and very regular disappearance of the panel when a window is closed. The panel process is actually active, both nautillus and maximus processes are working, the panel itself is not dead but is invisible, totally invisible until X is killed or the computer is restarted.Computer is an EEEpc 701 4GB, here comes lspci output:
admincho@eee:~$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 04)
I am in kolkata zone, just bought the 3g sim and teracom-lw272 device. The problem is, its not activating regularly(its detecting, but some time, after Network Manager starts working, its failing ), and once its failed to get enabled, its unmounting the device all together....so i have to physically detach the usb device and reinsert. I have installed a rpm file that installed a script VKGEther....a small script file...but nothin else. Also, speed is very little(in [URL], it shows 0.1Mbps d/l speed) here some more info:
My wireless connection drops after a while when downloading torrents. I have to reconnect manually. Current configuration is Macbook Pro 5.5 with Broadcom card and Lucid. I've tried with Transmission and KTorrent. It's not a network problem as my Win laptop works smoothly and with higher transfers rates (i.e. 1MB/s in Win vs. 300KB/s at most in Ubuntu).
Wireless connects fine, then disconnects regularly. I thought it might be an issue with the rt2870sta driver, so I blacklisted it, and it uses rt2800usb now:
Code: [ 13.625932] rt2870sta: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned. [ 13.633139] usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2870
My desktop (the system AIDE runs on) is reguarly updated, and the file output can become enormous, making it hard, if not impossible, to track down out of place files. I have recently thought of uninstalling it since I can't tell what is out of place and what isn't, but before I do that I wanted to ask everyones opinion regarding what would be the best way to handle such a program on a desktop that has some core files changed reguarly. This sytem is running Gentoo, so updates affect a number of directories.
I,m using Ubuntu 10.10 with Gimp. Ive got a lot of photos etc and need to back these up. Can I anyone suggest a good backup solution which does not require e to keep copying the same files? IE: Once the files are backed up I only want to back the files used since last back up?
I have three Toshiba S55 laptops running debian 8 or ubuntu 14.04 with Intel 3160 internal wifi cards.
In a heavily congested WIFI environment all these machines will regularly lose their associations with an ASUS RT-AC68U 802.11AC AP whether running ubuntu 14.04 or debian 8. The AP is 5 feet away.
I have upgraded the 3160 /lib/firmware to the latest available on the Intel website.
The association will generally be lost within 1 to 10 minutes. The behavior is very repeatable.
I have removed all networking tools except for wicd. However, the same behavior is observed using network manager.
If I plug in an rtl8812au based 802.11ac dongle the connection in identical situations lasts forever.
logfile around the problem time:
*** OpenVPN is often the first to notice the link is down
With Fedora 11, I got NetworkManager, and it never worked right.. Right now, the nm-applet crashes regularly, no message nothing, just disappears from the panel. I wrote a two-liner to run it in an infinite loop. But my wifi also disconnects every 10 minutes. It's like clockwork, it just disconnects. I see things about "error 38" in the logs. I tried downgrading, upgrading, nothing helped.
I was well aware of the KDE trinity project from the start. Its so that users can have KDE 3 X alongside 4 X. The lucid release is due soon. Anyway I did try some releases a while back. I would like to know whether this project is very actively developed? What I mean is do they devlop security updates and maintainance patches regularly? Are there any actual KDE developers involved? (Some Kubuntu developers are)
I have a tenda wireless adaptor running on 11.04 natty. The USB id is: 148F 3070
Using the already installed drivers rt2800usb it can connect to all 13 channels but is very flaky, transfers slowing and stopping regularly. The rt2870sta driver is a lot more stable, but it will only connect to channels 1-11, but I need to use channel 13 due to massive wifi congestion on other channels...
I've tried iwpriv but it says there are no ioctls for the device.
Is there any way to get the installed driver rt2870sta to scan and connect to channel 13?
I've also tried to install the latest drivers from the ralink website: rt2870sta says it can see all 14 channels, but fails to scan. I also tried rt3070 driver but I cannot insmod as there are errors...
I have just started to learn Java programming and need to be able to use a compatible notepad equivalent in Ubuntu i will need to save the data as is,in Ubuntu and be able to transfer the data from my Linux machine to the windows desktop regularly via memory stick i absolutely love Linux and don't want to have to go back to windows to do this.
I have a php script that checks versions of a remote stock file every 15 minutes. When it discovers that a new version is available it downloads the new file and runs it through a series of scripts that prepare it for an e-commerce application. It takes about an hour to import the file and process it. Otherwise, it echos "file on remote host not newer than local file". The stock file is updated every 3 or four hours and it's never at the same time. So we would like to run this script every 5, 10, or 15 minutes to make sure we have updated files.
So what happens when my php script finds a new file and takes an hour to do its work? Will the cron be activated three more times during this span? In other words, will it keep starting over even if its still running from a previous cron? Is there a way to stop the cron from running while the file download and processing occur, and then resume when its finished?
