Ubuntu Installation :: Anyway To Re-partition Disks To Use RAID1

Aug 1, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu server edition to my computer (brand new, no OS) and finished installation. In the terminal I used apt-get ubuntu-desktop to install a desktop interface. In my rig, I have two 500GB HDDs. I set them up through my computer BIOS as RAID1 drives, yet as I understand I still need to configure the Ubuntu software raid for it to work correctly. Unfortunately, I already partitioned my drives! I used the easy way (guided with LVM or whatever) and let it do it for me. Now, RAID1 is very important to me! Is there anyway to repartition the disks to use RAID1, or do I need to wipe my computer and reinstall Ubuntu?

Software :: Mount Multiple Disks As One Partition?

Ubuntu Installation :: Resize Partition On 10.04 - Virtual Disks ?

Aug 7, 2010

So I installed Wubi with Ubuntu 10.04 and chose the standard partition size (8GB?) and now I am running out of disc space. How do I resize this partition?

This guide didn't help: [url]

How do I resize the virtual disks? The download link doesn't work and LVPM doesn't support 10.04.

Any other options or do I need to re-install the whole Wubi?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Resize Partition After Cloning Disks

Nov 8, 2010

I bought an 1tb hard disk today and cloned my old 160gb ubuntu install to the new disk using gddrescue (from this tutorial [URL]) and everything worked fine. The problem is that I can't resize my home partition to fill the rest of the disk. I've tried using a live-cd and booting from my 160gb hard disk but I still can't resize the partition.

Here's the "sudo fdisk -l" output:

Quote:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Hardware :: Zero-length Partition - For 2 Hard Disks Within A Week?

Jul 15, 2011

Coming from Fedora, I had a Web/Mail/SQL server with 2 hdd's. One (sda1) was the one with Fedora on, and all backups were on sdb1.

Now, I started having issues with SDA1, so I started copying files to SDB1. 2 weeks later I noticed similar issues, and started copying new back files to SDB1. But once I started doing this I lost connection with the server.

Turns out that (in rescue mode) that I couldn't access SDA anymore, it couldn't even read stored data on it, etc. It didn't show up in fdisk anymore either.

So after a lot of trying I asked to replace the disk and started installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on it. After having installed everything, I tried to restore one of the MySQL backups that was on the SDB disk, but halfway I started getting errors. I stopped the restore and did some other stuff that I wanted to take care of first (apache2 config etc.).

I then tried to reboot to be sure that that was working as well, and then the problems started. I couldn't access the server anymore, and in rescue mode (which is a live cd my host provides, it's a dedicated server btw.) I didn't see SDB anymore.

I told them this and now after they told me that they managed to get it back, I went into the rescue mode and tried to recover bad blocks with the e2fsck command.

Code:

Trying to restore this bad superblock doesn't work. I've tried for almost all of them:

Code:

e2fsck: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sdb1

Could this be a zero-length partition?

What are the chances of TWO hard disks failing? Surely there must be something else wrong? Did a bad driver (which would be weird, since I didn't do any updates like that) screw both of my hard disks up in Fedora?

Also, I must note that when I tried to copy the backups from SDB1 to SDA1 (the new one). I got a read only (??) error, and some other I/O errors.

Just for information, I'll show fstab and mtab as well: /etc/fstab

Code:

Code:

I haven't added the sdb here yet, but it was here in Fedora so that can't be the problem.

And this is /var/log/messages when the problems emerged

Code:

Then on the ubuntu forum they proposed me to do this:

I ran smartctl and it gave me this:

Software :: Mounting USB Hard Disks With Partition Table Error

Mar 3, 2011

This was a really frustrating problem which turned out to have a really simple solution, so I'll share it with people who might be having the same struggle. Problem You plug in a usb hard disk and try and mount it using:

[code]....

I spent hours - days - hunting around for the solution! (And felt a bit humiliated when I realised how simple it was!) PS, There used to be a "Success story" section on LQ, but I couldn't find it; if this is better in another section, please move it. PPS, I'm on a public computer and won't have Linux access for a looong time - if anyone can copy the message that fdisk prints out to help people who are searching for it

Debian Installation :: Creating A New Boot Partition - One Of My Disks In My Computer Crashed

May 11, 2011

One of my disks in my computer crashed, it was the one containing /boot and some data partitions. The other system and /home partitions were on a second disk, which is ok.

I was wondering, can I create a new /boot partition, and keep on using the rest of the system? Can I somehow do it with a chroot from a live/installer disk, run grub, and use my system again? I have another disk which I can put in the system, but there is even an unused partition on the disk which is ok (but it is rather big for /boot).

Fedora :: Gparted - Kernel Unable To Reread Partition Table On Disks

Jan 22, 2010

When I start gparted, to see if I can add extra harddisk where all my data is, I get the next error:

Code:
[root# gparted
libparted : 1.9.0

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /dev/sda. I can start fedora 12 x64 amd whitout any problem. My partition layout on a single disk (80 gb sata maxtor) for the system is:
Code:
/
/home
swap

When I try to mount one of the extra disks (samsung spinpoint 1 tb, I have 4) I get to next error:
Code:
root# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

If I add the option with the filesystem I get:
Code:
root# mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist

In gparted, when I select just a flag option, and deselect, press ok, the disk is forced to be reread by the program. After that I can also mount it. When I use any of the programs linked in this post, I am able to mount the disks whitout any problem. Except after a reboot, I get the same problem. SO whit each reboot, or poweroff, I need to do a re-read of the disks. The system is fedora 12 x64 for amd, installed from a live cd, the rest whit yums groupinstall, the latest kernel.

Debian Hardware :: Servers Which Contain SATA Disks And SAS Disks?

Feb 25, 2010

I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?

I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);

dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)

(a new server,2 CPU 8 core and 8 gb ram)

1000000+0 records in
1000000+0 records out
1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 12.9662 s, 79.0 MB/s (I have not used this server yet) (hw raid1)

Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?

General :: New Disks (RAID1) Not Enough Space?

Jan 13, 2011

I recently followed this guide to create a RAID1 [URL]... First I partitioned the disks with fdisk. I made the RAID array with

mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1. Then I created the filesystem with mkfs.ext3 /dev/md0.

I then mounted md0 at /Video with mount /dev/md0 /Video/ All according to the guide.. Today I made a samba-share out of /Video/Rorschach to easily put files in there from my windows7-machine (the plan is to steam from my CentOS-server to my HTPC which hasn't arrived yet). I started to put movies in there. It went just fine for a while but then I got this message: [URL]... How is that even possible when df -h looks like this?:

General :: External Hard Disks

Mar 22, 2010

I'm using SUSE11.1, and connected to my system, a DELL 7500, a 1.5 TB Buffalo external HD. I partitioned it in 4 sectors. After connection, nmediatly the mounted disk would appear on the screen,(each partition with its respective name), and could use it as any other folder. To unmount the external Hard disk, I just ejected each partition, and had no problem. I used the same HD with my Mc, and things were all right, I used to backup automatically the Mc. However after having been using the system in this way for more than half a year, suddenly the hard disk began to rattle...and the SUSE system on the DELL, nor the Mc can mount the external hard disk any more. Thus, the partitions can not be mounted any more. When I cd to /media/ in the SUSE, the names of the partitions appear, but they seem to be empty..On the Mc, going to /Volumes/, before the problem appeared, the names of the partitions were there... but now, they are no more and the automatic back up either. So my question is, how to mount the disk, if it needs mounting... or how I can recover the partitions and the data therein... I am clueless, after two weeks trying to solve the problem..

General :: Using Mersenne Twister To Wipe Disks?

Jan 28, 2011

Currently when I want to wipe a USB disk with pseudorandom data in Linux I do the following:

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdb conv=notrunc

urandom is very, very slow, it gets to the point where the bottleneck is not the device. I know of another method -- the Mersenne twister. This is used in one instance by DBAN as a PRNG to securely erase data with, and it is easily 'random' enough for wiping drives -- and it is very fast. However, I'm not sure how I would use it in Linux. Is there a Mersenne twister program which I can then pipe into dd to wipe drives with?
