General :: Dual Boot \ Currently Downloading The Newest Version And Want To Be Able To Run Both?
Feb 19, 2010
but anyway I have a lot of stuff on my Laptop (I am currently using) and I am using Windows Vista, but I want to, I think it's called dual boot, where I can use both Linux and Windows. The only thing is, I am not entirely sure how to do this, I used to have it done on one of my other Computers, but I forgot how I did it, I am currently downloading the newest version of Ubuntu and I want to be able to run both.

Which LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?
I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?

Im currently running windows 7 and im looking for the best way to install fedora 13 and run a dual boot. i am open to other OSes as well mostly thinking of a tri boot with ubuntu but not really sure.
I am downloading the dvd installation version of fedora 13.
I have 110GB of unallocated space to put towards the project my main concern is how i should go about partitioning the space in the best way. (how much space for /boot and swap. what type of partitions should i use and so on)
Second concern would be to make sure i correctly configure grub(i have had trouble with grub recently) i just dont want to run into any issues after the installation.

After playing with various Linux distributions over the past 3 weeks (mostly Ubuntu) I decided on Fedora as the keeper. However, when it comes to linux I'm about as green as they come. I installed KDE Fedora today and managed to get Firefox and Flash installed without much trouble. However, I'm trying to download the newest version of Thunderbird but after a lot of looking, how to do it.

I downloaded the latest ClamAV (clamav-0.96-27.1.x86_64.rpm) from the opensuse ftp site and when i double-click on the RPM and choose 'install' it says this:[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.h1Oz1u] Repository already exists.I looked in the software manager in opensuse to see if it has the latest ClamAV package but it doesn't have the latest package or any package of ClamAV.

I tried to delete Ubuntu (the newest version, the only one OS on my PC) and install XP after that. I booted from USB and deleted one partition that contained Linux (formated it to ntfs) files using gparted. When I wanted to boot from Windows installation CD, i got the following message:Unknown file system:Grub rescue> I dont know how to proced with installation of XP, it seems it can not boot from my CD.

My procedure for updating the installed packages was, to klick on the list of packages that are installed in the installation source @ system in YAST and choose "Update if newer version is available". Up to Suse 11.3 Yast automatically chooses the latest version from each available repository that is installed (eg, Packman or Mozilla Build Service). With 11.4 however, I noticed that it only updates a package, if a newer version is avalible in the repository from which the package originally origines. Since I don't want to look through 4 GB of packages manually, whether there are newer versions in another repository available, I ask you if I there is a posibility to get the old behavior of YAST back.

I admit that I am a bit confused on how to proceed with this.I currently have an older version of Ubuntu (6 something) and windows vista and I have dual booting. I am trying to install 10.04 on top of the older Ubuntu and I want to keep the Windows partition. Last time I tried, I completely screwed up.I have multiple partitions now with a bunch of smaller ones that got created by mistake. I would like to re-size my partitions to have 1 main windows partition, 1 linux partition and 1 swap file partition. My HD is 160GB and I would ideally like to have the Ubuntu and Windows partitions roughly the same size.I included some screenshots of the install process and also a screenshot of my partitions.

So I decided to try something new and fresh. I wanted to try ubuntu. So I download the 64bit version from here. I made a 25GB partition. I then Wubi found out I didn't need the original file since it was downloading something else. I installed it, rebooted.
Windows comes up with a prompt:
Boot from:
Windows 7
Ubuntu
I click on Ubuntu. This comes up: [URL]. I am fairly new and I don't know what to do. I did research and nothing really showed. I then burned the said 64bit version and tried to do a Live CD but it didn't reboot into ubuntu. I really want to try ubuntu? I am going to re-install again.

I had done the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 online and couldn't boot to newest kernel and had to select the previous one in GRUB. From what I have read it may be because of NVIDIA drivers or some conflict. Anyways,I did a fresh install of 10.10 from the Live CD overriding my 10.04-to-10.10-online-updated partition so I do not have an option to boot older Linux kernels now. I was wondering if the Live CD could be used to install any previous linux kernels for the new installed Ubuntu 10.10 system.

this is a new problem with issues that started when I upgraded to 10.10. Originally, GRUB wouldn't load after that upgrade, but that was fixed here. Once GRUB was working properly, there was a problem with the 2.6.35-28 generic kernel. When I tried to boot through it, I would only get an ubuntu command line.
Luckily the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel worked just fine and I could log in and load my ubuntu desktop with no issues. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 to see if that would correct whatever was going on. The installation was completed without any apparent issues, GRUB works, XP Pro works, and the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel allows me to boot into 11.04.
Unfortunately, another new kernel, 2.6.38-8 generic, is not working properly. I snaped some pictures of what happens when I try to use this kernel:
[URL]
The first is GRUB/ The selection The second is the loading graphic The third is a command line where it freezes (note: this is not the same command line screen/environment that I was referring to with the 10.10 new kernel)

The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)
