My main storage partition got full, so I'm deleting files to make room. However, df -k keeps reporting no space available on that partition (/disk). View 4 RepliesMy /var/ partition continues to fill up on all my servers, and it is because the logs in /var/log/apache2 or /var/log/mysql are being deleted during log rotate, but their file handles are being held open. Thus, a "du -sh /var/log" shows the correct values, but "df | grep /var" shows something much different.
It seems that the log files rotate, however if I run "lsof | grep deleted" it returns lots of files that are no longer visible in the directory, however refuse to clear themselves off the disk.
The only way I have found to make these log files go away (and thus clear up the disk space on the partition I should have) is to restart either apache or mysql, depending on which process has huge sized log files being held open.
Is it just me, or is this a big flaw in the way linux works, that it can't figure out how to release file handle for a log so the disk space can be reclaimed? This is happening to me a lot lately.
Here is some output from one of my web servers so you can see what I am seeing...

I used photorec to recover lost files and it brought up 70gb worth of files, when I was done looking through them I deleted these files. but these files still seem to be taking up my disk space. When I try to access my trash bin with root I get a message that reads...."The folder contents could not be displayed. sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": operation not supported." if I open my trash bin when I'm not in root, the bin is empty.
How do I free up my disk space?
I'm running mythbuntu 9.04 and am having an issue with disk space.
I try 'rm' various log files but the space I free up lasts less than a minute before the disk reports as being full once more.
df -Th | sort gives:

There's nothing enormous in /var/log and my trash and the root trash are empty.
why size and used fields are not the same despite 100% usage being reported on sda1..
I have a Kingston 8gb Datatraveler that has been giving me troubles lately. For some reason after I delete files from it it still shows up as full and the files are shown in the hidden trash files. How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. When I right click and select information, at the bottom it says: Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of the file system. Because of this, some operations may be unavailable.

I routinely delete old email directories, but for some reason, I stay pretty high in disk usage. What are some good ways to start to compress batches of them (or all of them) in the background given the limited space? The problem with compressing the folder all at once is that I wouldn't have enough disk space for that. It seems the process needs to be broken down into chunks. For our workgroup I set up a server which is basically 10.04.2 with kernel 2.6.32-32-server on a SSD and all the data on a RAID 5 consisting of 4 2TB hard disks, thus a maximum of 6TB space for data on the RAID. Here is the problem: The volume Genomes (or /genomes) is half full
sudo df -ah
/dev/mapper/home--data-Genomes
1,9T 850G 920G 49% /genomes
but the system states it as full whenever I try to add more data (tried cp and rsync). There is no quota set to the volume (I have quotas in place for users home folders. These are only for max amount of disk space, not max file number, and I am still able to move/add files elsewhere so there seems to be no interference).

Trash is also clean.
When i try to install UBUNTU 11.04 it shows me the warning that there is no OS on my hard disk.But i have windows XP SP3 & UBUNTU 10.04 on my hard disk. Will all the files be deleted on my hard disk containing Windows XP if i install UBUNTU 11.04? How can i solve the problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bits) with KDE 4.3.1. My hard disk partition contains 3 areas : / + /home + swap. Frequently the / area is filling with, I suppose, temporary files until it is full (15 Go) and that in a very short time, typically about 5 mn. Then, these files are cleaned by the system, when disk space is needed I suppose. The point is that during this time, the system goes slower and slower until the "cleaning". That seems to occur only when Firefox (3.5.6) is running so I suppose that these files are temporary internet files.

Please contact your computer administrator."a few times, and it turns out to be because of low disk space. No worry, I empty the trash uninstall unneeded programs and clean out the downloads folder that filled up my disk. And all is ok. But not this time.Since I can't use X, I delete stuff from the terminal, and also make sure to clean out the .Trash in both /home and /root. But still the disk is full. I delete more stuff, but it doesn't even seem to go to .Trash. It disappears, but no more disk space.

My main problem is that when I dual booted ubuntu onto my laptop, I had vista already installed, so I only set aside 20GB of hard disk space for ubuntu, which seems like more than enough to me. are all over 1 GB in size. The largest is 18 GB. Together, they total 48.3 GB. I restarted the system, forcing a fsck.
I started getting errors about running out of disk space in root this morning. I hunted up what's taking all the space; var/log is 39GB (Ubuntu is installed on a 50G partition.) It's specific files that live in that directory, not subfolders. The files are:
kern.log = 11.6 GB
messages (plain text file) = 11.4 GB
kern.log.1 = 6.1 GB

I don't understand disk sizes in Linux. I have a 500GB drive. It's ext4. I have run "tune2fs -m 0" on it to reserve the amount of space reserved for root to 0.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 that comes with a Disk Utility. When I run "System->Administration->Disk Utility (palimpsest)" the disk shows up as 500GB (see picture). But when I run df -h it shows up as 459GB. So, I don't understand the discrepancy.
When I run df I get the following:
Question: Why is Disk Utility showing me something different than "df"?
I have a list of files in a directory which starts with - or have space.
I need to copy them back without the space or -?

So... I run df -h and I get this:

It's close to full, but not actually full. I can't run a lot of things on this drive because the programs complain that they have no space.

With other words:
Can I backup a full linux system from a ext file system to a external ntfs partitioned disk using rsync -a (keeping all file permissions)?
Is something getting lost of a file (like permissions or anything... flags...) when copied / rsynced from ext to ntfs?
The thing is, that when I restore the stuff back from ntfs to ext, can I still use my system properly?
And can I backup files like photos from ext to ntfs without loosing any meta data?
Or asked more in general: What is the difference of a file on a ext partition compared to the same file on a ntfs partition?
