So, how do I remove ALSA package without removing DB2 ?PS: Also, db2 installed X11 packages like libx11-dev, libxproto-core-dev etc., which are also not need for me as it is a sever OS.

I have installed, actually just tried to, BSecPKLinux-2.0.0.0007 as token utility, but the attempt screwed my synaptic. I'm using a ubuntu 10.10.While running the install file, a package failed to install and from then on I was never able to fix this. the package is rnboifd. When i try to uninstall it or purge it using dpkg it complains it is in a "very bad inestable state" and should reinstalled. when trying to reinstall fails.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a formal documented way? I have found a method of doing it, but I find it difficult to believe the ability to uninstall is not formally supported. [URL]
Essentially:
When you install - python setup.py install --record files.txt
When you uninstall - cat files.txt | xargs rm -rf
This will, however, require the user to look through files.txt like a hawk. It is really not an ideal situation I would think.
In an attempt to minimize my system when I mark for removal libcups2 using synaptic it asks to install 7 not authenticated packages, however if I choose mark for complete removal it asks to install the same 7 packages and remove every single installed package from epiphany to gimp to zenmap. Any ideas as to whats going on with that?

I know there's a which command, that echoes the full name of a binary (e.g. which sh). However, I'm fairly sure there's a command that echoes the package that provides a particular binary. Is there such a command? If so, what is it? I'd like to be able to run this:
commandName ls and get coreutils for example.
I'm using a new Distro and after installing it and randomly searching for help on websites on how to install a .Deb file using dpkg at the konsole/terminal it says Bash : dpkg: Command not found . how is this possible ? Do I have to know about all the packages in the package manager to install this. slight difference for me ... knowing what I have and knowing if I need Apr93-323? (whatever) installed first or not ? The only thing I know is that I have the Iso image installed ... which is my linux distro . Where to go from here? because I usually go to a website site to find Software to install ...if I need it .back to the basics
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a weird/stupid question. How do you know what command would start an application after installing it, if the synaptic package name doesn't match?
For example google chrome and lmsensors. The first appears as Chrome in Synaptic and the second as lmsensors, but to run them you have to type google-chrome for the first and sensors for the second in the console to start them.
When I did locate sensors or locate chrome/chromium, nothing came up in the search that would hint me that I need to run those commands. I had to rely on a google search and look for someone else's answer. Is there a better way, one that I can figure it out on my own?
I installed it to see if i could get it working, but after reading and realizing ymail accounts need to be paid for in order to access the pop3 server i was dissappointed in not being able to connect to my mail without the browser. well anyway i am a fairly new user, started using ubuntu and linux in general in september and therefore i rely heavily on GUI so don't know to much about the terminal. anyway Poptray minus doesnt show up in any of the GUI managers for removing or installing packages so i was hoping someone could give me the command line for the terminal to unistall this application.
