Fedora :: Upgrade / Replace Current Python 2.5.2 On F10?
Dec 31, 2009
I have some tools that seem to have issues with Python 2.5 but are OK (on other systems) with Python 2.6. So, I was considering upgrading my Python interpreter to the current 2.6.4, but I know that in various RH distros, this was strongly discouraged. Is it OK to replace my current Python 2.5.2 on F10? If so, should that be done from source or can I do this cleanly through yum?
My office has a box which is, by necessity, dual-boot WinXP/Slack. The Slackware I'm running there is -current, all great and fine. Until now... It turned out that my mobo, an ASUS P5KPL-CM, died after a power surge. Since the XP needs software activation, we replaced it for an exact copy of the mobo. After the change the box worked fine in XP, and I was able to connect to the network via the Ethernet interface. BTW, the Slackware version is Slackware-current, updated as of the Jan 9 update (after that I was no longer able to connect to the Net with Slack). However, in Slackware there was a problem: eth0 was no longer recognized. Using /sbin/ifconfig only listed the lo (loopback) interface. The lspci output is:
is there a way to have reposync replace packages with the most current versions? because when i do it for my "network repo" it seems to just add more and more.
I'm encountering a python error in the beginning of the upgrade. See screenshot. How can this be solved or should I indeed file a bug report? Problem is that except for taking the picture, I've been unable to save the info.
I'm writing a program in Python that presents a place for the user to input one-line of text (using raw_input). I need, however, as the user types, for certain words to be replaced, even before the user hits enter.
I try to make an animation so you can see what I mean, here the word "pig" gets replaced with "sheep": >I| >I | >I l| >I li| >I lik| >I like| >I like | >I like t| >I like to| >I like to | >I like to e| >I like to ea| >I like to eat| >I like to eat | >I like to eat p| >I like to eat pi| >I like to eat pig| >I like to eat sheep|
Note, the user never typed "sheep", the program replaced "pig" with "sheep" as soon as they finished typing the word "pig". The user did not use "Enter". Is this at all possible in Python?
I just finished upgrading the last of 3 machines from F10 to F12 using preupgrade (all i686). Except for a non-critical hplip issue, all went well with the first two machines upgraded 1 week and 3 days ago, but some python F10->F12 updates were missing on the third machine that I upgraded yesterday, leaving yum inoperable. Thanks to good yum error messages, I was able to resolve the problem (I think), but I thought I should post to check if mine is a unique or common problem, to enquire if it may have resulted from some of the python packages being in "update transit" in the repositories, and/or whether something like this can be avoided in future? Details follow:
Upgrade appeared to go well except for some dejavu font dependency issues (experienced on all three machines) and libcrypto.so.7 missing for eet-1.2.2-4... (third machine). However, there was a boot message that some python module (can't remember which) was not present for some nvidia requirement, although video driver worked fine. When testing yum: First it complained that libpython2.6.so.1.0 was not present. Since that module conflicted (identified by rpm) with various python 2.5.*f10 packages that that were still on board, I copied libpython2.6.so.1.0 (from a current f12 rpm) into /usr/lib manually. Second, yum complained that urlgrabber was not available, so rpm with the latest python-urlgrabber for f12 solved that.
Third, yum complained that pycurl was not available, so rpm with the latest python-pycurl solved that. Yum now works! and boot message is gone! I ran "yum install python-libs" to make sure that any necessary dependencies were met following my manual installation of libpython2.6.so.1.0, which resulted in a bunch of python dependencies being upgraded as a result.
I do a lot of music based stuff using Ardour, Lmms and the like but had no problems, games, native ones run fine and can play L4d2 etc via wine without much trouble and look pretty enough to me. what would make my life so much better? If i had a clean install of the same version of Ubuntu i'm currently running (10.04), could i copy my current home folder over to a new machine and replace that home folder with current one?
I have been trying to get my WiFi(AR9285) card to work properly for quite some time now. I need to know how I can completely remove the wireless driver that comes pre-installed with ubuntu.I have done the following:- Installed the "compat-wireless-2.6.33.tar.bz2" drivers, which have ath9k.(This had no effect. I rebooted and it still gives me the exact same problem)-Reinstalling ubuntu -Disabling IPV6-Ensured that I am close enough to the wireless router. It's not an out-of-range/low-signal problem. What I need to know:-How do I completely remove the current driver that comes pre-installed, in order to make sure it is replaced by the new one?
-I have read about "Backports" many times, but I am not sure what I should do. It would be great to get any instructions or links about this.-As a last resort, I think I'm going to have to use ndiswrapper. Again, before I do this, I need to know how to completely remove the current ubuntu driver, to make sure it doesn't fight with the one I will install. I'm going to find the needed .sys and .inf files now, as I have completely ran out of ideas
I'm using centos5 hiab with qmail and apache and i'm trying to install Mailman via: ./configure --prefix=/home/admin/mailman --with-mail-gid=qmail --with-cgi-gid=apache
and I get the error:
***** Distutils is not available or is incomplete for /usr/bin/python ***** If you installed Python from RPM (or other package manager) ***** be sure to install the -devel package, or install Python ***** from source. See sec. 15.1 of the Installation Manual for ***** details
Doing an rpm -qa | grep python yields the following: python-2.4.3-19.el5 libxml2-python-2.6.26-2.1.2
[Code]....
So it seems to me that the only thing I need to is upgrade(new install??) python-devel-2.4.3-19.e15
I would like to update Python v.2.4 and Numpy to Python v.2.6 and Numpy v.1.3. How can I do it. I heard that we can use "yum update", but I am not sure to do it correctly.
On upgrade I ran into this catch-22, and have almost 500 packages in limbo because of it. Any ideas on how to fix python-gobject or pycompile or whichever is angry?

I have recently upgraded from lenny to squezee and I noticed some problems during upgrade with some python files. Now I have same problem with them and I need to resolve it so that I can install sane:
Code: dpkg --configure -a Setting up python-imaging (1.1.7-2) ... Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/local/lib/python2.5/runpy.py", line 95, in run_module filename, loader, alter_sys)

aptitude -f install reports same problems with python-reportlab and python-imaging.
I am running Maverick Meerkat now, and will think about upgrading to Natty next week. I have a question--I run GNOME as the environment now, and if I do upgrade, will Natty replace it with UNITY?
So I was trying to upgrade kupfer when it told me it couldn't, as python-keyring was a virtual package and could not be installed. I'm using Karmic, so the package python-keyring is not available, although it is in Lucid. How would I go about upgrading kupfer/installing python-keyring??
I had problems with python stuff and so update manager did not work. Also many other problems, PiTiVi was installed but did not start eg... After many trials of this and that I removed python-gtk2 and so also ubuntu desktop. But was unable to get it back. Now I cannot even shut down. While it is not possible to install desktop or anything else, would it be possible to fix this by upgrading the whole system to 10.04 (10.10?)? Would it fix python installation. How could I do it. Some info tells to change sources.list and run apt-get upgrade, but some tell not to do so.

Currently I have a AMD athlon 1.5 ghtz processor and want to upgrade to Ubuntu 10. I currently have 7.2 and when I click on the upgrade to latest version I get errors "can't find....."
I've downloaded the latest version onto the desktop, but need to get the iso file onto a blank cd. That's the other problem, I need a quick and efficient cd eraser/writer. so after erasing I can write the iso file and then, hopefully, boot to 10.
1) erasing the cd (what program do I download)?
2) writing the Version 10 and then booting up to the current?
All this is very basic to this forum, but I'm from the Windows lot....looking to make the switch. If it goes OK on the (very old ) desktop, I'll do the same with this laptop
If I just upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04, will it replace gnome with unity? I tried unity before and it is not satifying because it is not customizable, I feel I have less options and less power over what my interface looks like and how it behaves. Same case with gnome3.I'm wondering if when I upgrade to Naughty will I have to go through a lot of messing around with packages and configuration files to get back to gnome2 ? Do we have an option when we upgrade to choose between Unity, Gnome2 and Gnome3?
After upgrading to 10.04LTR 64bit I encountered this problem below... I have already tried -f / --configure to no avail.

I am attempting to bring my server up from etch to lenny and during that process I need to upgrade my kernel to at least 2.6.18. I am currently on 2.6.17-2 and get the following error for my sources.list file:
W: Couldn't stat source package list [URL].. stat (2 No such file or directory)
Is there any chance we'll see the newer version of Audacious (2.4.2) in -current, or is it too late in the day? If I get time, I may try building it on my -current install.
i can start X with the nvidia module, the log here:

I'd have said SNAFU, but the truth is that I really don't recall this mess being "normal" in Slackware since v7. This kind of mess is what I expect from Ubuntu, not Slack. Here's what happened. I was running Slackware-Current 12/10/10 and wanted to move up to Current 1/10/11. I read and followed the UPGRADE.txt including running "telinit 1". The system had 2 working kernels menued in Lilo, a custom 2.6.35.10 symlinked to "/boot/vmlinuz", and a custom 2.6.36 fully declared in lilo.conf and labelled Current.
The "upgradepkg --install-new" installed a "new" kernel which would only have required a simple deletion, but somehow and for some silly reason my lilo.conf was overwritten and lilo run so that when I selected "Current" instead of my nice 2.6.36, long story short, I got a badly working kernel where my keyboard didn't work.
Why would "upgradepckg --install-new" install an older kernel, and more importantly, instead of merely as an added option, override and ruin my existing, working lilo? Slax is overhauling to add pacman and I see some people even here leaning toward more automated package management in Slackware. What gives? Is Slackware headed down this path? Please, Joe, just tell me it ain't so.
i have a live cd i had sent to my address a while back but now i am outdated and would like to upgrade to the current version. is there any commands i can run to upgrade? or will i need to order another live cd
A friend installed Ubuntu 8.4 for me. I tried to upgrade to the current new version but it will stop at one point and say," Failed to fetch compiz-plugins_0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb. Hash Sum mismatch" and stop. I can separately download that very same file but it won't do it by itself.
how do I get it to work? I am just a windows user trying to learn to get away from Windows. This has been bothering me for the past ten days and each attempt ends at the same point.
I've (almost successfully) upgraded my 64-current.
1. It used to be or is? 64-current multilib, however, before the upgrade I commented out any blacklisted packages in slackpkg's blacklist file (including aaa_eflibs)
slackpkg update, install-new, upgrade-all, clean system (removed all the packages that were specified in changelogs.txt as removed)
When started X two things were wrong.
1. XFCE icons disappeared
2. The mouse pointer was going crazy
2. I fixed it by following Eric's advice and created a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-mouse.conf where I put the Input section from my xorg.conf
I'm still at loss when it comes to the icons.
btw, I've reinstalled my nvidia binary blob, somehow it doesn't seem to see it. Does the new Xorg use xorg.conf anymore?
I'm using Slackware current. I've updated my current after about two months from the last update, and since there was a huge number of changes I'm having some problems. In particular, I've forgot (my fault!) to give a "slackpkg install-new" before rebooting, so now I'm getting stuck...
Installpkg now claims a "rev" command, but I cannot figure how to find it, since the Slackware package browser on the website is still broken (when will it be available?!?!). Now, each time I try to install or upgrade a new package, I get this error:
/sbin/upgradepkg: line 41: rev: command not found /sbin/installpkg: line 59: rev: command not found
