Fedora :: Synchronization Thunderbird And Nokia (N97) Smartphone?
Nov 15, 2009
I 've searched for on a lot of threads and google results, I found no response. Does someone know a solution to synchronize calendar and contacts between a smartphone nokia ( particularly N97 one) and thunderbird with lightning or sunderbird plugins on fedora ( release 11 for me) please?

I have been struggling to set up and learn to use an efficient way of task & event management. At the moment, I use Thunderbird+Lightning with Gmail (IMAP) and it works OK. I would like to add a smartphone to the equation - I know it isn't cheap and I'm expecting to pay anywhere between $100 and $500 for one - since my old phone is slowly dying anyway and I need this to work for... well, work. I would like to be able to synchronize through bluetooth or wireless at home or whenever the phone gets near my laptop, as well as (if possible) whenever the phone gets near a wireless access point. I don't want to use 3g or any similar services. I have had no luck googling so far.
I have tried synchronizing with Google Calendar, only to be disappointed by the fact that it doesn't support tasks. I think the distinction between tasks and events is an important one and it keeps my calendar organized, so I'd hate to have to give it up. I haven't chosen a phone yet, so I can adjust my choice to whichever brand or type (or OS) is best suited for what I need.

find a groupware solution that statifies KDE/Kontact and Thunderbird/Lightning users equally, I have stumbled upon a problem that appears to be Client related. While using Citadel, Thunderbird would sync its calendar using SyncKolab (IMAP-based) and Kontact would use GroupDAV. While Kontact worked perfectly, syncing with Thunderbird caused the calendar events to become 'invisible' to both Citadel and Kontact.
Now I am testing eGroupware, where Thunderbird sync's using CalDAV and Kontact still GroupDAV. Now events added by Kontact become invisible to eGroupware and Thunderbird when they are edited using Kontact... The Problem is hence in the way Kontact and Thunderbird handle their iCal entries (at least that's the only explanation I can come up with). Is there a known incompatibility between the iCal libraries of these two Clients? Has anyone had a similar issue? Is there a GroupWare solution that does not require me to setup a while network on a box (as in OpenXChange or Zarrafa) and still allows Thunderbird and Kontact to sync?

Given that Nokia have bought Trolltech, albeit quite a while ago now, I still can't see any native QT version of Nokia's software suite for their phones. Are there any plans in the coming year for a Linux version of Nokia's PC Suite software?

I was looking for a way to get the same or similar functionality as the Nokia PC Suite on Ubuntu 10.04. I did find a discussion here [url].
However it is fairly old (2008). I was wondering if it is possible to get more recent information.
In the Ubuntu Software Center I find two applications that seem to fit the bill. I need to know which is better or are the complimentary.

I'm running a Windows 7 guest using Virtual Machine Manager to launch my "console" to the VM. I believe it uses VNC to connect to the console. I'd like to have clipboard synchronization so I can copy from the host and paste to the guest.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Kubuntu) and have a LG Arena (KM900) smartphone which when plugged into the USB socket and I select the iSync option on the phone, the handset is correctly identified as a Mobile Broadband device in Ubuntu network manager. However, I'm having difficulty getting Ubuntu to connect to T-Mobile through the 3G modem. I've referenced [URL] and[URL] and I can not connect. I'm assuming that this is something to do with Mobile Broadband settings I'm using:
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: user
Password: pass

I'm an absolute beginner at encryption. gpg and keys still have me somewhat mystified, so please forgive me if the following seems like a stupid question. I'm looking at encryption software for my smartphone. I've found a Java program called TinyEncryptor that uses the TwoFish algorithm and claims to be a shell for the "Legion of the Bouncy Castle" libraries. It just uses a passphrase; there are no keys involved as far as I am aware.
Naturally, I would like to be able to decrypt files on my desktop that I've encrypted with this program. So far, I've not had any success with finding one.

There are absolutely no wifi hotspots near my school which doesnt have wifi. The only free hotspot is in the bar, and I use it quite often when I take laptop with me. Well, when I don't have wifi access I use my phone. When I had my old laptop with windows on it I could use nokia pc suite to connect to internet via phone on my laptop. Now I am 100% linux user (no way you would force me to go back, specially not on a laptop).
I was wondering if there is any software for fedora 12 that could do a similar thing and turn my phone in a modem...

I have been using windows xp and microsoft outlook, mainly for the reason that Microsoft ActiveSync on my smartphone can only work with outlook. Now that I have diverted to Ubuntu, I'm wondering if there is any way to sync my smartphone calendar, to-do task list, and contacts, etc, with evolution under Ubuntu?

This is the operating sequence:
msynctool --sync kdepim-e71
Synchronizing group "kdepim-e71"

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I have two 1TB hard drives, one in my Linux server (running Debian, but I thought I'd ask here anyway) and one in my Windows desktop.
What I would like is a file synchronization program that will automatically (or scheduled via cron) synchronize my hard drive on Linux with my hard drive on Windows via Samba.

My phone is dead or dying so now is a good time to look for a FOSS replacement for Nokia PC Suite and Outlook -- the only reason I run Windows.
Is there any solution (or combination of solutions) that supports synchronising personal information manager (PIM) data -- most importantly names and phone numbers, calendar/schedule and notes -- with any model of cell phone?
EDIT:
SyncEvolution looks promising and there are reports of it working at least adequately with several phones including the interesting for Linux people Nokia N900 but OS-wise it only claims compatibility with ubuntus and debian 4.0, not beloved Slackware; maybe that's more because of what people have tried than because it doesn't work. As the name suggests it works only with Evolution, perhaps not the first choice of email client and PIM.
