I have reinstalled Fedora 11 i386 four times now. After I install the Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion I start having intermittent problems with no sound at bootup. Null output. I've posted here about this problem but received no responses so this must not be a common problem.
Would it be possible to change the order that the drivers load so the nvidia driver loads after the sound drivers?
How to control the driver order be loaded by linux.
For example: I have two ethernet card is A and B. Sometimes A be loaded first sometimes another. How to control A card be load first in every times?

See, my netbook has really crappy speakers so I picked up an Insignia USB Soundbar so I could get much better sound out of it. how slow XP was on my laptop, a casual friend (who moved away and I have since lost touch with) installed Fed 11 as a dual boot with XP, Fed 11 first. It has worked great for email and some net surfing. Now the machine is going to my wife, who does not want have to go to the boot menu to get XP. How do I change the order so that XP boots first and you have to go to the menu to get Fed 11? I've tried going through the forums, but since I'm not really a computer person, there are some basics I don't know (for example "open a terminal" - how does one do that?)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running into a strange problem trying to change the service load or boot order on my CentOS 5.3 box.
The service in question is shorewall. When I go to my /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/, I notice that shorewall is listed a S27shorewall. I need it to start much later. So I run a simple command "mv S27shorewall S99shorewall"
I then restart the server. But after the reboot, something has reset it back to S27shorewall.
For those of you who like the background story: I need to change it to S99shorewall, because I need shorewall to start AFTER xend does all its stuff, as xend messes around with the underlying networking of the computer. The xend stuff was at S98 and S99...but I was able to successfully rename them back to S97 and S98, and the rename stuck. I've also renamed other service orders. Those stick. The only one that gets reset is shorewall, always back to S27. I have no clue how to tell what is causing the resetting...
I'm trying to automate OS installation. I've setup PXE and able to do network installation. For installation, I'm changing the BIOS boot order to boot from network.Once the OS installation is over, I need to manually change the BIOS boot order to boot from hard-disk. Can BIOS boot order be changed using programs/command-line so that i can eliminate human intervention in the installation process by changing back to the original boot order by program/commands?

Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I tried to rescue an old laptop that kept crashing (turned out to be HDD failure), a problem with the graphics quickly revealed itself. A graphical install was already impossible, and it looked like the image was starting halfway and wrapping around the screen, together with all kinds of artefacts. It's hard to describe, but impossible to work with. I did notice that all was okay when I booted into GParted live in the safe graphics mode (vga=normal).By the way, the system specs: AMD Turion64, NVidia 7150M.
When I had succesfully installed Debian using the normal non-graphical installer, the same effects showed up as soon as Nouveau was loaded, so I SSH'd into it to uninstall them and install the proprietary NVidia drivers. After purging nouveau and rebooting, the effects were gone! It clearly was a Nouveau issue. However, after I installed NVidia drivers successfully (X also started fine), I wanted to change the resolution using nvidia-settings which prompted:
"You do not appear to be using NVIDIA X driver. Please edit you X configuration file (just run nvidia-xconfig as root), and restart the X server."
Running # lsmod | grep -e " 0 " | wc on one of my servers running CentOS 5.5 (64 bits) reports me 32 unused modules, I mean, modules with 0 references. Am I wrong interpreting these results? If I'm not, how can I automatically clean those unused modules (i.e not manually running modprobe -r ). Some years ago there used to be a daemon called kerneld who was in charge of that task, right? What's CentOS new equivalent?

This is the problem I run lspci -v which checks all drivers on my system and more. It says kernel driver in use is nouveau. Then under that it says kernel modules: nvidia recent, nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb. So what it looks like I have 3-4 drivers for my video card loaded and one, nouveau, being used. I think they conflict with each other.
I'm trying to add drivers other then nouveau, because the mouse freezes with it. At this point I can't seem to get rid of nouveau, I go to terminal and type:
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
And it says that it's not loaded so I can't dump it. lspci-v says nouveau is the driver being used and trying to dump it. It says it isn't installed. I'm confused. I want to dump nouveau, what should I do? I also go into Synaptic package manager and it isn't listed as being installed.

In order to install them, I need to exit the X-server and terminate all OpenGL processes. How do I do that? I've seen many things like 'press ctrl-alt-backspace' and typing 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop' but none of them work. I'm using Kubuntu 10.10 and gdm doesn't even exist.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using an NFS server to share data on our small business network. It works a bit faster than SAMBA, but I do have a problem. NFS takes group id from the first 16 groups a member belongs to when mounted - let's not get into how that doesn't make huge amount of sense
Since I assigned about 6 different groups to our users internally to control directory access, some internal groups do not pass when mounting the server's files (as ubuntu has at least 8 or so groups that are system dependent). Is there a way to change the ORDER of the groups a user belongs to? I see that what gets passed to NFS mount follows exactly the order given when I type "group" when logged in. The groups do not come in alphabetical order or group ID number. I did try changing the order of entries in /etc/group and that also doesn't do anything. Essentially they seem completely random.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64 in a three-boot configuration; the first boot choice screen (the one I would like to change) gives the options of booting to Ubuntu, 3 options I don't understand, and booting to Windows 7. Unfortunately, at least for me, Ubuntu is at the top and is the default. [The third choice is Win XP x32 - but it appears on a separate screen]
My question: How can I make the boot to Windows 7 the default choice?

My Ubuntu file server sits under a desk and shares files with the network without a hitch, and in a perfect world I wouldn't ever need to shut it down (I reached 6 months uptime once). However, since it occasionally needs service, or additions and needs to be moved, I need to shut down.
The trouble is, the power management system is borked, so whenever I issue "sudo powerff now", the system halts, but the PSU stays on. I usually wait a few minutes after and flip the PSU switch, but I'm never sure if the system is already down.
Is there a way to reorder the way services shut down so that I put SSH last, and therefore know when the system is down when my session is disconnected? Is defaults.rc or whatever responsible for that?

I used the startup manager, and indicated that XP should be the default OS. Nothing changed. View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu on one of my partitoins. Sinec I am new, I formatted that partition to install a different type. Now when I boot my machine, instead of booting to my Windows partitoin, it boots to my blank Linux partition and gives me a Linux prompt.
I can boot from the Ubuntu DVD, by changing it in my BIOS, but I can't change the boot partition order within Linux (that I know of).
