May 25, 2011I'm somewhat of a n00b. I have a dual boot machine running XP and Fedora Core 14. I like my default boot always to be XP. Right now, XP is default BUT every time there is an update to Fedora, it will change the default to Fedora. I now have to edit grub.conf to boot from xp again. Is there a way to make xp always as the default even after an update?

Feb 24, 2010I have fedora 12 installed on a laptop with an LVM partition, /dev/hda5 logiacal partion in the /dev/hda4 one, a boot partition on /dev/hda3 and a FAT on /dev/hda2 for win data. There was also a 10GB free partion left from older works on /dev/hda1. Now the /boot partition was set to only 0,2GB and this conflicts with the kernel updates. I freed the 10GB section, formatted it to ext 4 and copied all stuff from the /boot sector on it. now the old /boot is mounted in the grub.conf on a UUID and not the /dev/hda3 as it comes up on fdisk.
I would now like to swith the boot from the small /dev/hda1 partiotn to the larger /dev/hda3 one, but don't know how to manage it with grub (fedora, i understand it's grub-legacy).

Apr 1, 2011I have a computer with 2 HD. In one of them there are installed XP and F14. In the other there are several XP files and Mandriva (the last installed distro). At booting, the grub window I see is the Mandriva's one, where I can select F14 or XP. I should like to see at booting the Fedora's grub.conf window with selecting options for XP or Mandriva. How can I change this?

I tried to repair it with fc12 DVD 32bit, but it doesn't have any option for repairing grub (fc10 DVD had this option!!)

Feb 11, 2011In Fedora 14, the colors of the grub boot menu were changed. why, previous versions of the grub boot menu were always the same, that black bar on white letters.
Now suddenly in F14, it was changed to a white bar, on white letters, which is hard to see and looks stupid besides. How do I change those colors back to the old way? the black bar on white lettering?
I have been googling for this topic and I don't see anything in the docs listed for it so decided to ask here.

Mar 3, 2009I recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?

I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. Aug 15, 2010I gave sda1-2 for windows and sda 3-4-5 on an extended partition for my linux OS. I installed ubuntu on sda 7 (when I go into disk utilities it shows up as sda 7 idk why) alongside another ubuntu on sda 5 ( EXTENDEDPARTITION : sda 5-6-7 ) so I could remove mandriva bootloader.Since I did, I removed ubuntu (sda 7) since it wasn't necessary but after it gave me the grub file not found.Obviously yes, since GRUB was installed from sda 7 but i have another grub.conf on sda 5 and I would like to know how to change the path of the grub reader to sda 5? or must I install all over again de grub loader?

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

What I currently have is Grub-2, and the question is can I safely switch from that to legacy, i.e., with a simple synaptic remove and install?
The Remastersys package actually wants to install, also in synaptic, the dummy package "grub"; so should I allow it to take care of the switch, or do I do it myself as above?
Using Debian Squeeze only, no multi-booting.

Jul 5, 2011I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 with Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 and a 10.04 LTS minimal install. All booting fine with 10.10 grub at boot. I installed Xubuntu 11.04 on another partition, all went great BUT ... I was in a bit of a rush and when I got back to the machine and rebooted for the first time, 11.04 had installed a grub and taken control of boot. That is fine, everything boots okay, but I really didn't want this.
10.10 is my production install (10.04 just never played nice with this machine or I'd be using that, naturally) and is stable, tweaked to perfection, and staying where it is; 10.04 and 11.04 are 'experimental' for me and likely to be replaced or tweaked into oblivion anytime. Therefore, I want 10.10 to control grub, as it was doing before, which gives me the freedom to explore the other two installs without fear of bricking the machine.
How can I now take control away from the 11.04 grub and give it back to the 10.10 install at boot?

I regularly update my ubuntu (10.04), and new minor versions keep accumulating on the GRUB screen. Right now I have 5 different versions listed on the GRUB, even though I always select the latest version to work with.
Am I supposed to do anything to get rid of the old version references? Do these old versions affect disk space/performance?

I have edited etc/default/grub so that it has GRUB_DEFAULT=6 (to correspond to my XP installation) and GRUB_TIMEOUT="3", but after running sudo grub-mkconfig the grub.cfg file still says set default="0".

Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic.Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).
