Problem is, I no longer use empathy, I use pidgin instant messenger. Can I use the #2 icon referred to in the picture to control my status for pidgin?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi am in the process of setting up my wonderful slackware system on my laptop, and now i would like to make sure i am able to run as much multimedia as possible (to be up to snuff in this realm with mac and windows users). i am running slackware x86_64 version 13.0 with a full install (but only with the software sets a, ap, d, f, k, kde, l, n, x, xap, y) and have installed flash-player-plugin from slackbuilds.org.
recently i stumbled upon this website: [url] it explains precisely what i would like to know: which packages should i install to get a fully-featured multimedia slackware install (and in which order should i build/install these packages to take care of dependencies). i emailed the author to make sure this guide was up to date with slackware 13, but, sadly, it is not. it seems that mr. anderson uses slackware 12.2, and thus there may be inconsistencies between what this guide explains and what works on the newest slackware. for example, mplayerplug-in has been depreciated in favor of gecko-mediaplayer. i need to know if more of this has happened. i would simply test it myself, but i have been distro-hopping reinstalling repeatedly over the past few weeks for various reasons, and i am trying to avoid dirtying up my system too much and having to reinstall yet again.
so i ask of you, does mr. anderson's list apply to slackware 13.0, or are there any changes that need to be made? i ask because someone here may have already used this guide and may be willing to share their knowledge and experience on it. eric's vlc slackbuild is very interesting, and i plan to run that, so vlc and its dependencies are covered. my multimedia needs are not too demanding, but i do expect web media to work flawlessly. i often visit www.apple.com and watch movie trailers, guided tours, etc., so i need quicktime videos on the web to work. videos and online flash games already work fine with flash-player-plugin. i also visit some web sites that have windows media formats being streamed (.wmv and .wma).
I have a Gigabit network card that it's using r8169 kernel module and is not showing 1000 mbps capabilities; instead it is showing the following:

I just started using suse, so a few questions claws-mail 3.7.5, I have no print capabilities, there is no print icon showing, also the spam filter is greyed out. I'm very new to linux and would like to build a 64-bit file server to backup my pc and laptop, I would also like it to have HTPC capabilities because it will be stored in my "man cave", where me and mates seem to hang out a fair bit. I've never built an AMD system before and would like this build to be AMD.
This is what I've come up with so far:
64-bit system:
Case: Thermaltake V3 with 450W PSU
CPU: Athlon II x2 255 3.1GHz
Mobo: ASRock 880GXH-USB3
HDD: WD Green 500Gb for OS, 2x Samsung EcoGreen 2Tb for storage (one will be kept off site)
Memory: 1x Corsair CMV4GX3M1A1333C9 4Gb DDR3
[Code]...
I'm not sure about all this being compatible with linux, like the tuner, but I have read that you can get this working. I'm on a pretty tight budget so I can't upgrade to higher end components, but would like suggestions on components where I could save a few $$ or if any of these components are overkill.
I'd like to modify a linux distro, specifically Puppy, so that the drivers/mechanisms for mounting local HDDs and Networking is Disabled completely. A step further than simply disabling "auto-mounting" at boot time, I don't even want mounting to be possible (at least by default).Likewise, further than just disabling network devices, I'd like to remove the ability to use network devices. How are these "mounting" and "device drivers" mechanisms implemented, where are they, and what are my options?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto an older laptop for my boss. However, after installation I lost all internet capabilities... both through wireless and ethernet connections. There is zero indication that Ubuntu is picking up any wireless connections at all and when I plugged into an ethernet connection Ubuntu acts as if it is trying to connect, however unsuccessfully. I have eliminated the internet connection as my problem because I was able to connect with my laptop running 9.10 with no problem. I have searched and searched everywhere for fixes to this problem however 99% of them need an internet connection to install the required firmware and drivers... is there any OFFLINE solution out there?The computer is a Compaq Presario 2200 with a Boradcom Corp BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller

The very good thing is that it gives grub2 ability to boot isos on a NTFS formatted HDD. Isos that one otherwise had needed to place on a Ext2 formatted partition and that could serve those who want to preserve windows for Gaming?
I have an internal PCI sound card, and I would like to find out what MIDI capabilities it has, if any. It is currently using the ens1370 ALSA driver. It has the standard Line in, Line out, and Mic jacks, as well as what appears to be a game port. I think it has some MIDI capabilities, because "cat /dev/snd/midiC0D0" does not fail with "no such device or address," but I don't know if it has MIDI input capabilities, or if it can synthesize, or what. Is there any way to tell?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid, I guess one of those upgrades was the tex engine, it was upgraded to texlive 2009.Though It can render everything I could render beforehand, I am having trouble about one thing. I cannot use the additional preferences that can be used to edit an image when using includegraphics function.
For example:
egin{figure} [H]
centering
includegraphics[width=0.7linewidth,angle=-90,trim = 5mm 8mm 10mm 0mm, clip]{example.ps}
end{figure}
Used to rotate my ps file, trim it, then scale it as specified. Now, I get an error:
./Rapor.tex:59:Illegal unit of measure (pt inserted) ...e=-90,trim = 5mm 8mm 10mm 0mm, clip]{example.ps}
If there is only [width=linewidth] tex doesn't recognize linewidth and prints:
./Rapor.tex:59:Missing number, treated as zero...includegraphics[width=linewidth]{example.ps}
and the output file has the text within the square brackets, rather than the image.
Somehow there is a problem or a change in how this usage is interpreted. I am using:
usepackage{float}
usepackage{graphicx}
packages that are related to graphics. I'm using Kile 2.0.85, but the problem is editor independent, I get the same results with Texmaker. I am using the exact same .tex sources that I used with Karmic.
What I've tried:
I installed texlive packages from scratch, with Kile.I changed the graphicx.sty file with a version that I found on the net.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a way a very lightweight MTA without network capabilities just for receiving local administration emails?I know I could restrict access, I was just wondering if there was something more lightweight designed purely for local use.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and shortly before the release upgraded from a geforce 8400gs to my geforce GT240 and noticed no difference on Karmic. I read somewhere that the capability of video cards would be applied further with Lucid. Since installing Lucid I've noticed a severely reduced sharpness and severely increased contrast, changing the contrast in X server has no effect. My hardware driver is activated but not in use and no online fix I've attempted has been successful in resolving the issue. Is it possible to use a gt240 on lucid with no hassle and is there any way I can maximize my video cards capabilities?

I suffer enormously from net addiction (as well as gaming addiction and related behavioural maladies).I've had revelatory success in controlling my time online-and, in general, in front of a screen with unproductive applications- by locking my monitor's power cord into an Ems PowerCop (the key to which I keep at work). Writing and journaling, I do on an AlphaSmart Neo. However, I could really use a tool to allow me to edit and typeset my writing (and only those tasks).I'm considering buying an ultra-low cost net-book.I want a netbook because it's the cheapest way to keep the display power fully dependent and integrated with the machine---I can't have something that will allow a simple means of working around the Ems PowerCop. Also, since it lacks an optical disk drive (and since I'll be keeping my usb drives at work) there will not be an easy way to reinstall the operating system. However, before I buy anything, I need to know that, after installing/configuring all of my preferred settings for vim and La/Xetex, there is a way that I can cripple the netbook and all of its applications so that no internet access is possible.
The Cherrypal Africa can come with either Ubuntu, Debian, or its own Linux blend, Green Maraschino. If it ends up being either Ubuntu or Debian, what can I do that will irreversibly (at least, from a software level---a hardware level would probably require damaging the usb ports, which I don't want to do) disable its ability to try to communicate with the internet (including the software repositories)? I'm hoping for a particular system file that I can delete rather than the addition of a command somewhere that would be easy for me to undo when I'm bored out of my mind and want to see what Wikipedia has to say about the glycemic index.
I would like to use as much FOSS as possible, particularly with touch screen computers. Is it possible to run Ubuntu with touch and/or multi touch capabilities? If so, will an HP Touch Smart computer run Ubuntu? I would very much like to purchase said machine via Linux Foundation discounts if this is the case.

Boot screen for fedora came up, hit enter and fedora started loading. The little balloon started filling up, got to a quarter full and then screen went black. Had to reboot to get going again,same thing happened. Can anybody tell me what may be causing it,i.e. black screen. Fedora boots up and runs lovely with internal h/d removed. It generally happens when I hit the mouse scroll wheel or when I move a window around very quickly. After that the left mouse button would stop working...
Anyway I found an easy workaround which I thought I'd share.Just hit 'enter unity' on the VMWare player menu. Then you can immediately exit unity again. This somehow resets the mouse into its normal state...

Ideally, a packaged version would be best. I tried compiling from source, but the cmake dies looking for SAMPLERATE_LIBRARIES, I have libsample installed, but have no idea how to tell cmake to use it, or even if that would work. Version 1,6 comes standard with Kubuntu, which I also have installed on the same machine as F11 and Windows 7. Interestingly, Windows 7 exhibits the same behavior as Fedora (trouble writing DVDs from files over a network) while Kubuntu with k3b 1.6 does not.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?
I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.
When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable
It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.
I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"
It says:
What can I do to connect to the internet? I have a flash stick if its possible to download a .deb package on this mac and transfer it over to my other laptop to fix the problem. If its possible.
