I am trying to install Wine 1.2 through the terminal, I type yum -y install wine1.2 cabextract and then hit enter. Then it says "You need to be root to preform this command" What does this mean and how do I become "root?"

I am playing about with Fedora10 installed in VirtualBox on a Fedora9 x86_64 system. To mount a shared folder I need to run a command as root, which works OK, if done the right way. I thought it might be simpler to do it via a shell script, but that doesn't work and neither does the use of sudo, or su. The only way I have managed to get it to work without error is to use 'su -' Here is the response I got from the terminal...
[terry@localhost ~]$ sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=terry ShareVM /home/terry/ShareVM
/sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: Protocol error
[terry@localhost ~]$ su

here is the script that doesn't work...

I have recently installed Fedora 14 on a new computer we presented as a gift to my sister-in-law. She is new to Linux. Although I've used Fedora since Core 1, I'm no expert on security issues, and this baffles me. She's doesn't know how to change the root password, so why doesn't it work any more? She discovered the problem when attempting a yum update from a terminal.(1) How could the root password have gotten changed? How likely is it that someone got onto her system through ssh, made a lucky guess on her root password, and then changed it? Are there robots that do this?
(2) The firewall is enabled. I have it set up as follows: (a) under "Trusted Services," only ssh is checked (I need to be able to get in remotely this way); (b) under "Trusted Interfaces," I have eth0 checked (I need to be able to use VNConto her desktop).Question: Are these settings giving ample protection? What settings would be recommended to protect her system while at the same time allowing me to access it through ssh and VNC?
In the freshly installed Fedora 12, I installed java and maven and added following files into /etc/profile.d folder:

I've started to get emails that would typically come from [URL] as [URL]. These emails come from services that send out emails (backup programs) directly, or from cronjobs. I've logged in as the non-root account and either sudo su - or su - to root and the restart the service at one point or another. If I login directly as root and bounce the service or cron the emails come across as from root. I don't see anything in my environment variables after I su to indicate what would cause this. I'm not sure where else to look? A pam setting? This seems to have happened between Fedora 10 and 14 (did a bunch of overdue upgrades recently) I've only got Fedora so I don't have anything to compare to. In Fedora 10 I did not have this problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my ubuntu I have a command pm-suspend, which puts the computer to sleep. It has to be run with sudo. Since it is inconvenient to be forced to type the password every time I want my computer to sleep, I thought maybe there's a way around it. Naively I thought that if I'd create a script as root, that invokes pm-suspend, and then let anyone execute that script, I could run that script as my own user and then that script would be considered run by root and hence be allowed to run pm-suspend. Obviously that didn't work. The root-check procedure in pm-suspend still found out that the original executor was someone different from root.
Still I think something similar (although slightly more elaborate) should work.I'm thinking about the process that allows the user to mount hard drives for example. Normally root is required, but it is somehow bypassed by the gnome utility mounting.
I have a Linux machine which I set up for my personal use at home. I installed Fedora Core 11 a long time ago, and recently I noticed that I am not able to log in as root (I didn't realize this issue until recently since I always have been logging in as a user account that I created during the FC11 installation).When I login as a user account instead of root, I can use the su command with the password I set up for the root account. Even when I'm in GUI mode and try to make changes to the system from the user account, the GUI asks to enter the root password, and I type the password I set for root and it works. However, if I boot the machine and try to log in the system as root, password that I set up is rejected.
I'm very puzzled with this problem because with my limited knowledge on Linux system, I thought the root password and the su password are the same (i.e. when you install Linux OS, you set the root password, and you use the same password for using the su command). I do not know exactly when this problem started, but the only thing that I can think of as a cause of this issue is that I once changed the root password from GUI using System > Administration > Root password since the system one time complained about the low security strength of the root password.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running a shell script using a non root user. Somewhere down in the script, I'll have to call some script to be executed as su (or a user with more privileges than the one running the original script). So if i put a line in the script as:

Then when running the command, it will prompt me for root password(because the current user has lower privileges than the user requested. Suppose I want to pass this password as an argument to the original script, so that it doesn't prompt me for password later on, what is the way? Can I switch user passing the password and run a command?
I use the system command route from a process (using the system() call). For security reasons the process does not have root privilege and for some reason I cannot use ioctl() either. I tried to set the capabilities of the process to NET_ADMIN and SYS_ADMIN but the route command still failed due to insufficient permissions.
What are the capabilities that I need to set for route to be successful?

Login as root; "pkill mplay";hear nothing; "/etc/rc2.d/S99test"; more loveliness; press pause...silence! I know that i the former case, mplayer is assigned (for lack of a proper term) to a session, e.g. tty1. Not so in the latter. But why should a program like mplayer not receive (or ignore?) input from lircd, simply because it doesn't have a session? And how can I get mplayer (or any program run from boot scripts) to work with other programs (like lircd)?
Because I have a flaky wireless device, I occasionally get a hung connection and this script gets things running again in just a few seconds except obviously the boldfaced item, as it still tries to run in the root directory and gives errors:
Configuration file "/root/.kde/share/config/knetworkmanagerrc" not writable.
Please contact your system administrator.
So I am not sure how to get knetworkmanager to run as me, the user ubuntu in the /home/ubuntu directory
