Fedora :: Saving Kernel Shutdown Messages As Text?

Jan 30, 2010

When my computer shuts down, I always get a long error message from the kernel. It's the very last thing the computer does and I can't even use the keyboard, since the system is halted. I wanted to read it more carefully (it's very long and doesn't fit the screen) and file a bug report against the kernel with it. But for that, I needed to save all that text in a file.

OpenSUSE :: Saving Messages With Knode

Jan 30, 2010

I have used knode for nntp browsing ever since I settled on openSUSE a few years back. I have a reasonably large collection of useful messages stored in local folders so that I don't lose access to them as knode expires and drops them from the original groups. Testing out the KDE4 version of knode I find that I am no longer able to drag/drop the messages I want to keep to the local folders - in fact, I can see no obvious way to get them there.

Am I just missing an obvious setting or has this feature gone away? Loss of
it would be a show stopper for me.

Ubuntu :: (auto) Saving Files Before Shutdown?

Jan 15, 2011

I am wondering if there is already a feature, and if not, then a way to save any open files before a shutdown occurs?

I use xfce4 battery plugin and there is the option to invoke a shutdown whn the batt. hits critical percentage, but I would like to be able to run something at the low percentage stage to save any open files in case the critical stage is reached. I have had no luck googling any solutions or potential solutions.

Fedora :: Kernel: Imklog Continuously Generating Error Messages

Oct 4, 2010

I am using latest updated Fedora 13 (presently kernel-2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686).

kernel imklog error messages fills my hard disk again and again, /var/log/messages file becomes more than 5Gb daily.

the /var/log/messages file contains following entries:

Sep 27 10:35:09 arun kernel: imklog 4.4.2, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Sep 27 10:35:09 arun rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.4.2" x-pid="1083" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] (re)start
Sep 27 10:35:09 arun atd[19007]: File a0000b0145c567 is in wrong format - aborting

[Code]....

I think, I can stop kernel logging from /etc/rsyslog.conf, but I wanted to know the real problem.

Debian :: How To Log Bootup And Shutdown Messages (with Systemd)

Jun 23, 2015

During the boot-sequence of jessie there is more text flying by on the screen (including some errors or warnings) than I can read thorugh fast enough. I don't think this is very serious stuff, and if it were I could always look at dmesg and or syslog i /var/log but I would find it really convenient to log these messages in a file instead of sifting through or grep-ing dmesg.

When duckduckgoing this matter I found [URL] ....

I installed tried bootlogd but when configuring it to "yes" and rebooting nothing comes up in /var/log/boot.

Then I saw this line in above link

If you use systemd as your init system, you may need to use systemctl to debug boot problems.

Fedora :: System Hangs Due To Kernel Error On Shutdown

Feb 20, 2010

I have just made a clean installation of FC12. The only change I have made for now is to disable the NetworkManager and set a static ip address. My problem is that when I click "shutdown" it doesn't complete the shutdown and hangs due to some kind of kernel error. Then I have to use the power-switch to shut it down. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often (every 3rd shutdown or so).

I get this error-messages on the screen:
Code:

Ubuntu :: Hide Verbose Messages On Restart / Shutdown?

The software on both machines is identical (except for the nvidia packages).

On restart or shutdown on the intel based PC plymouth gives way to a console for 2 or 3 seconds showing the following (none of which are errors as far as i know)...

Code:

General :: Turn Off Monitor (Energy Saving) While In Text Console Mode

Nov 3, 2010

How to configure Linux text console to automatically turn of the monitor after some time? And by "text console" I mean that thing that you get on ctrl+alt+F[1-6], which is what you get whenever X11 is not running. And, no, I'm not using any framebuffer console (it's a plain, good and old 80x25 text-mode). Many years ago, I was using Slackware Linux, and it used to boot up in text-mode. Then you would manually run startx after the login. Anyway, the main login "screen" was the plain text-mode console, and I remember that the monitor used to turn off (energy saving mode, indicated by a blinking LED) after some time. Now I'm using Gentoo, and I have a similar setup.

The machine boots up in text-mode, and only rarely I need to run startx. I say this because this is mostly my personal Linux server, and there is no need to keep X11 running all the time. (which means: I don't want to use GDM/KDM or any other graphical login screen). But now, in this Gentoo text-mode console, the screen goes black after a while, but the monitor does not enter any energy-saving mode (the LED is always lit). Yes, I've waited long enough to verify this. Thus, my question is: how can I configure my current system to behave like the old one? In other words, how to make the text console trigger energy-saving mode of the monitor?

Ubuntu :: Evolution Not Saving "sent" Messages?

Jun 29, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu off and on for a long time, and now that 10.04 is out, I just had to come back to it, and leave Windows completely behind. They finally did Ubuntu right. However, I am having one problem with the Evolution email program, that I never had in the past.

I send some very important messages several times a day, that I really absolutely MUST keep a copy of. I looked in my "sent" folder earlier, needing to find one. I noticed that it has not saved a single message I have sent for days. Just to see, I sent a test message, and as soon as it sent, the outbox was emptied and the message was not in the "sent" folder. I have looked around here and so far, have not come up with anything like what I am having happen.I've checked all the settings, I can't find anything that seems it would affect saving sent messages.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Shutdown / Reboot - Get Screen With Green / Bold Status Messages On The Side

Dec 5, 2009

everytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...

But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

Ubuntu :: Evolution Import-Some Messages Missing Body Text

Oct 22, 2010

I have started using Evolution because I gave up tying to get Thunderbird or Eudora work. I kept getting "unable to locate mail spool file" when trying to receive mail. I was able to import my mailboxes from my Windows Eudora. But in those mailboxes, about half of those emails had the headers but no body text. What is causing this and can it be fixed.

More importantly tho', when I import my contacts from Eudora, they are a mess, and pretty much unusable. I see a series of rectangles with "alias" on top and "real name" underneath and then when I click on it, expanded below is the alias and email address. There are two of these alias/names per rectangle and they scroll across. Any idea how I can fix that other than manually typing in each address.

Ubuntu :: Get A Message To Flash Up On Screen Based On A List Of Messages In A Text File?

Oct 10, 2010

i've been using some subliminal software on windows for a while now and have found it to be really good. It basically just flashes up a message on screen over the top of whatever is going on at that time but the message is only there for about 30 milli seconds

The message is not there long enough for your conscious mind to read it but the theory is that your subconscious mind will read it.It actually works really well. THe problem is that they dont package a linux version although they do have an OSX version, i'd really like this on ubuntu.

Tried it in wine and it installs but nothing happens after that. Alternatively perhaps somebody can tell me how you could get a message to flash up on screen based on a list of messages in a text file?

Ubuntu :: See Console Text On Restart/shutdown?

Aug 4, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on an IBM Thinkpad T60, when I try to Logoff, Restart, or Shutdown the system just goes to a black screen and I'm forced to do a hard reset to restart the system. I did a reinstall and things seemed to be working fine until I applied updates and reloaded my package list from my previous install then I got the same conditions as before. I suspect that this my be a result of a bad package or update. What I want to know is if their is a way to display console text of the shutdown process so I can see where the system hangs and possibly remove the problem application. I have an AMD 64 bit desktop running with the same package lists and have no issues I suspect it is a hardware specific issue for the laptop or an error with a 32 bit install.
