Fedora :: Permissions - Cannot Shutdown Or Access Webcam
Nov 4, 2010
I don't know what triggers this, but every now and then I seem to lose the ability to do a lot of stuff:
* access the webcam
* shutdown from GNOME
* change power manager preferences
* mount external drives
A reboot makes it all work again. This is on Fedora 14.

I've created a new user for a SSH tunnel only.After login I can access all directories because permissions is set for "Others" to "Access files".Now my question: Is this normal that permissions for Folder access for "Others" is always set to "Access files"?I don't want my SSH tunnel user accessing the directories.

Recently I installed vncserver (tigervnc) on my desktop. Ever since my computer refuses to shutdown normally. At shutdown the following message pops up: Quote: System policy prevents stopping the system when other users are logged in Then I have to enter the root password to shutdown. If I stop vncserver before, the computer shuts down normally.

I am wondering if there is a good application that would allow me to setup a webcam at home, so that if I am at work, I could launch an application my android phone (or via a web browser) that would allow me to view & HEAR what is going on. It would also be neat if the application running on the home computer could be smart... ie: start recording if there was a loud noise & send an email alert ... or similar I havent purchased any hardware... but was thinking a (USB) for the main and an additional wireless (w/infrared) for being able to move around.

I'm mounting a cifs share via fstab, and using both the uid and gid for the permissions when mounted (I did try with just gid set too..) My user account is part of the 'users' group.
gid=users; I get read only
uid=nobody, gid=users; read only
uid=veehexx, gid=users; RW access.
Why is that? surely if permissions are set to use groups rather than users, then it should work. How do I get around this? All my knowledge is based in the Microsoft camp - if a user is in a group, then you can assign that group to a resource and it will work.

I have a home network setup. The server has OpenSuse 11.1 installed. I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 and my wife has an iMac. My wife an I are both members of the same group and that group has full rwx permissions in the directories we access. All the directories we need belong to that group. We can all connect to the server and access files without a problem. However it seems that all the files are read only for the other user. In other words if I make a directory on the server and save a file in there, I can access it with full permissions and my wife only gets read access and vice versa. What should I be looking out for or checking that would enable both of us to have full permissions other than setting permissions on the directories to the group we share (which I have done)? I also have one other question.... I notice that some users and some of the groups have the same number. I assume that this is normal?

2011-04-11 11:57:03 UTC I don't know what happening with my centralized log-server running octopussy. Currently it is working in a vmware setup with approx 980 Mb ram and is set in bridge mode. Currently is it set to receive logs from logs devices which are 4 in number one of which includes the core isg-1000 device. This setup is still in its test form....now what happens after some time (sometimes it taken days and sometimes just hours) when the connection (https) is suddenly lost to the apache and i can no longer access the interface. What happens more strangely my Ethernet interface gets shutdown on ubuntu. I have to restart the services by issuing /etc/init.d/networking restart.
Even at times it itself start receiving network packets on its own; without even restarting; i don't what the hell is wrong with the server. I cannot understand its erratic behavior. I need a sound and reliable Ethernet connectivity at all times because coz of loss of connectivity in my case would mean loss of logging functionality. I dnt want any time-gap in logging ...as im currently logging some highly critical devices on this server.

After NFS mounting some system folders (i.e. lib, usr) of a slave cluster node to /lib & /usr located on the master cluster server I got into some problems: I forgot Ubuntu 10.04 was installed on this particular slave node, while the master node runs 9.10. Now, I am not able to unmount these folders using umount, or restart the system using shutdown, I get some error: " /lib/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.17' not found". Is there an alternative way to unmount these NFS shares, or to restart the system to undo the mounts? The systems are located elsewhere, so just physically restarting the system would not be the preferred option.

I am setting up a new ubuntu server, and I am quite new to linux. This server will be used as code repository for a project I am going to be working on. I plan to setup 3 groups for users: dev, test, doc
- for various developers, testers and documentation users.
I would like to setup the following permissions on the main code repository directory:
dev - write permission
test - execute permission
doc - read permission
public (anyone outside these groups) - deny all access
I am unsure what chmod setting to use, or if this is even possible in ubuntu.

I am using Ubuntu after a BSOD error. Ubuntu is awesome, I can access all my windows files, however, I need to access my programs on windows. Here's what happened - I accidentally changed permissions after getting a virus. I then tried to do a system restore and during that process the computer crashed. When I try to boot to windows in every possible mode, I am always left with the dreaded blue screen of death.

I am looking for the best way to set up permissions in the following situation. I have a web server set up on debian. I have different web sites in /var/www. Each web has a group of developers who each have system users and ssh access to the server. For example i have a web site in /var/www/example.com and a group of developers in group exampledev. I need all the users in exampledev plus the apache user (www-data) to have read write and execute permissions on all the content of the web site. I can give the group exampledev these permissions without a problem. The problem is that when they modify or create new files (they either connect via ssh o sftp which is the same right?) they are created with their user and group rather than exampledev. Am i going down the wrong path? This must be a common situation but i haven't found the solution.

What should I do if I want to allow access to USB flash drive selectively - Say for e.g. All permissions for "root", "Read/Write" for user "A", Only "Read" for user "B" and user "C" shouldn't be able to access or mount (no permissions) the USB flash drive at all.Also I want to do it by modifying entries in some files or by some commands (so that it can be done programatically if needed)

when you attache a pen drive with windows you can drag from the pen drive to the desk top, and visa versa. with Linux logged in as normal user I can drag files from pen drive to Desktop but not the other way around. my pen drive is TITANIUM and at /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/TITANIUM so I have to use
cp /home/user/Desktop/file /media/TITANIUM as root
If I log in as root I can drag files from pen drive to desktop and also from Desktop to pen drive. is there an easy way to give permissions for normal user. I had a look a groups and it has scanner, printer etc listed ,can I amend groups somehow to enable same permissions for pen drive access as root?

Slackware 13 64 bit Hp Photosmart c4280 USB (All-in-one)
- Printer successfully configured using CUPS
- Scanner only works when I am Root.
- When trying to access scanner as user it says there is no scanner attached.
What should be the groups for this user in order to access the scanner? Actually, they are: haldaemon, disk, audio, video, cdrom, plugdev, power, scanner, lp. Below are the outputs for sane-find-scanner (as both root and user), although, since the scanner works well under root, I am almost sure it is a problem with setting permissions and groups.
Quote:
# sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

Is there a way to restrict users that are logged into the shell via SSH/Telnet/SFTP from using the 'cd' command to move into certain directories, yet not use the chmod command to do it? For instance, restrict users logged in from accessing the /var/www/ folder but have it still accessible using a web browser. Also, would this defeat the purpose since they could just wget from it if its still web accessible through a browser?

I have apache2 running on my computer. I want to change the permissions for /var/www/ so that I can edit the files without a problem. Right now I can use the gksudo command, but I'd like to be able to have all the files available when using an IDE like eclipse.
I've read in several places that
Code:
chmod 755 /var/www
will do, but if I'm not mistaken that would give read/write access to anyone. I'm not in a production environment, so I'm not too worried about security, but I'd like to give anyone else as less permissions as possible. Would this be possible?

How can i make sure that when ever boss creates a directory in projects, it retains base folder permissions and is writable to user this is my samba file... i am using red hat 6.1 with samba 3.5.6 (i think)

Is anyone aware of a detailed "flow chart" -- arrows and decision diamonds, etc -- that describes the file access and permissions processing? I would love to see that diagram. Years ago on a platform far away (Digitial VAX/VMS) their manuals had such a flow chart that covered not only the user-group-owner and read-write-execute permissions decision making but also include "access control list" processing at a superficial level. If someone has access to the VAX/VMS flow chart, that might be a start toward sorting what linux does.

Having set up many windows servers with complex permissions on shared folders, I now have to do the same in Linux (and I'm such a noob to Linux) I understand that each file/folder is assigned a user + group, and that the rights can be set for the user, the group and global (aka everybody else) My challenge is this, inside my shared folder there is a folder that should be RW to some users, READ ONLY to others, and not accessible at all to the rest of the users. (lets call the folder MyFolder ) All 3 groups have more than 1 user, so they have to be groups (right?) How would this model work in Linux ? If there is no other way, I guess I can nest the MyFolder in a folder that has permissions to allow all users that may access MyFolder, and block the rest, then on MyFolder, set owner group the RW users, and set global to READ ONLY.
Ps : The server I'm setting up runs Debian Lenny, files will be accessed from windows workstations using samba.
